ECOLOGICAL BUILDINGS
1. - Introduction
Since the beginning of time, people have always sought a place where they can be relaxed
and do their basic needs men became sedentary, thus calling the place they were looking
for "home".
They made their houses of adobe and straw, then, hundreds of years later, thanks to the
advance of ingesting, they knew and / or made a material that until today is very used:
"the brick".
However, the advancement of technology also led to an uncontrolled exploitation of
resources, in addition to the little care and respect for our planet.
Against this, the civil engineering was in need of taking drastic measures, and one of them
will be exposed in the following report.
These are ecological buildings, which consist of buildings (even to cities) whose main
objective is to support the restoration of our environment, in addition to providing quality
of life to those who inhabit it.
We hope this report will please the reader, and serve as a source of information for future
generations.

2.1 Ecological Building
They are also known as sustainable construction
An Ecological Building is a structure that is designed to create and sustain mutually
beneficial relationships with all elements of this local ecology.
With the Ecological Building, the designer recognizes that people can play an important
role in improving and sustaining the health and vitality of their local ecology to reduce
environmental impacts, taking into account all phases of construction, from their Design
until its reuse, recycling or disposal.
Talking about sustainable buildings is talking about the least negative impact on the
environment and the greatest positive impact for people living in the building.
The construction of ecological buildings every day is taking on greater importance, either
by caring for the planet or by reducing costs.
Among the benefits we have:
Environmental: reduce global warming and the ozone layer, as they use less
energy, generating less greenhouse gases.
Cost Savings: Through solar panels, companies spend less on electricity.
Higher profits: By working with low-cost materials
Health: Using this type of material benefits the health of workers, as well as that
of future residents.

In some countries, it has become so important that they have given way to what are called
"ecological cities"
2.2 Ecological cities
An eco-city is a city built from the principles of living within environment means. The
ultimate goal of many eco-cities is to eliminate all carbon waste (zero-carbon city), to
produce energy entirely through renewable resources, and to merge the city harmoniously
with the natural environment; however, eco-cities also have the intentions of stimulating
economic growth, reducing poverty, using higher population densities, and therefore
obtaining higher efficiency, and improving health
The ideal "eco-city" has been described as a city that fulfils the following requirements:
Has completely carbon-neutral and renewable energy production
Has a well-planned city
Restores environmentally damaged urban areas
Ensures decent and affordable housing for all socio-economic and ethnic groups
In addition, the city design must be able to grow as the population grows and the needs
of the population change. This is especially important when taking into consideration
infrastructure designs, such as for water systems, power lines, etc. These must be built in
such a way that they are easy to modernize.
Between the leading ecological cities we have:
Curitiba, Brazil: The city was designed for the mobility of people, not the mobility of
cars. Curitiba maintains the lowest air pollution rates in Brazil and over 300,000 trees in
the city helps reduce natural flooding.
In 2010, Curitiba recognized for their achievement with the Globe Sustainable City
Award due to their understanding of sustainable city development both regarding
policy and implementation.
Auroville, India: Its focus is its vibrant community culture and its expertise in renewable
energy systems, habitat restoration, ecology skills, etc.
Freiburg, Germany: In the 1970s opposition to local nuclear power led to the creation
of a campaign for sustainable solutions for the energy needs of the city. A network of
environmentalists, research organizations, and businesses was established, helping the
agenda of a sustainable city push forward.
Freiburg is a green city. 43 percent of borough area is woodland. In 2001, the Freiburg
Woodland Convention was adopted and since 2009, the city officially supported the
Freiburg Convention on the Protection of Ancient Woodland. For over 20 years Freiburg
has worked to maintain their public parks with principles that work with nature: they no
longer use pesticides, grass is mown less, and almost 50,000 trees line streets and parks.

Challenges associated with planning and managing sustainable programs are also large.
The costs and infrastructure needed to manage these large scale, two-pronged projects are
great, and beyond the capabilities of most cities.

In addition, many cities around the world are currently struggling with budgetary issues,
high rates of poverty, transportation inefficiencies, and rapid population growth
encouraging reactive, coping policy. While there are many examples worldwide, the
development of eco-cities is still limited due to the vast challenges and high costs
associated with sustainability.
Maybe, Piura isn't an ecological city, but we can help to keep our city clean, helping the
environment and contributing our bit.
Remember:
A clean city is not the one that is swept the most, but the one that is less dirty.
