Union of Sets : The set consisting of all the elements of two sets is called the B and it isunion

of those two sets. The union of sets A and B is denoted by A B = {x : xAB is Aread as A
union B. In set-builder notation, the definition of A or xB}. B = {1, 2,

Example: Let A = { l, 2, 3, 4} and B = {2, 4, 6, 8 } be two sets.Then A 3, 4, 6, 8}. Here 2 and 4

are in both the sets. In the union, 2 and 4 are listed once without the repetition.

Intersection of Sets: The set consisting of the common elements of two sets is called
intersection of those two sets. The intersection of sets A and B is denoted by B in set builder
notationB and is read as A intersection B. The definition of AA B = {x : xA and xB }.is
A

Example 4. If C = {l, 2, 3, 4}, D = {0, 5, 6, 8}, then determine CD and CD. Solution: CD =
{1, 2, 3, 4} {0, 5, 6, 8} = {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8} CD = {1, 2, 3, 4} {0, 5, 6, 8} = .

Complementary Sets: If U is the universal set, then U\A is denoted in short by and is
simply called the complement of A and is defined by = {x U : x A}.
