schools next Tuesday, dont
worry; its likely only a
drill.
Stoughton Area School
District staff, along with
local law-enforcement offi-
cials, will conduct trainings
at each school Aug. 29 as
part of a transition to a new
emergency response proto-
col, ALICE (Alert, Lock-
down, Inform, Counter,
Evacuate).
Please do not be
alarmed, these activities are
part of the training program
for our staff, the district
wrote in a news release.
The district began to
move to the ALICE mod-
el last school year, when
members of the safety com-
mittee attended a two-day
training to receive certifi-
cation to bring the program

Guitars for Girls program grows into its own design

The Stoughton Area School Dis-
trict is in the second year of a pro-
gram designed to help introduce
girls to STEAM (science, technolo-
gy, engineering, art and math) disci-
plines.
And they get to build their own
electric guitars.
For the second consecutive sum-
mer, a group of Stoughton girls enter-
ing grades 8-12 has the opportunity
for each to build her own solid body
electric guitar through the Guitars
for Girls Amplified program at
Stoughton High Schools Fab Lab.
Stoughton High School Band
director Dan Schmidt, who teaches
the class, said the idea came from
the Fab Lab at Fox Valley Technical
College in Appleton. Last year, the
district sent him there to build a gui-
tar and get the experience needed to
teach a similar course in Stoughton.
As far as I know, were the only
high school in Wisconsin thats doing
what theyre doing at Fox Valley
Tech, he told the Hub last week.
Last year, we just wanted to build
one, and this year, its been moving
into, Now can we start to change
things up a little bit?

and if you can do that, what else can

The city will have a
slightly smaller increase
in its tax levy for the 2018
budget than it did for this
years budget.
Stoughtons rate of new
construction was up 1.75
percent last year, com-
pared to 1.9 percent in
2015, according to figures
released by the state last
week.
That means Stoughton
will be able to increase its
property tax levy by about
$110,000 next year, com-
pared to about $133,000
for the 2017 budget, Mayor
Donna Olson and finance
director Tammy LaBorde
told the Hub.
The difference is a lot
of money, Olson said. On in manufacturing value.

James Christensen, a
Stoughton native, has com-
posed and arranged over
400 works during his career,
according to a news release
from The City of Stough-
ton, and is well known for
his Disney tunes and over 37
years spent at Walt Disney
Productions.
His music can be heard
at theme parks around the
world, including the Dis-
ney parks, Knotts Berry
Farm, Canadas Wonder-
land, Hershey Park, Lotto
World (Korea), Everland and
Movie World (Germany). He
also arranged music for the
Boston Pops, the London
Philharmonic, several Super
Bowls and MENCs World

Harry was born Aug. 1,
1923 in Chi-
cago, Ill. to
Harry E. and
Esther (Knud-
sen) Rynning. He grew up in
Chicago. Harry served in the
Navy from 1943-1945. After
his service, he met and married
Elda Hougan of Stoughton.
The two raised seven children
in Edgerton, Wis.
He worked at the Edgerton
post office for 32 years, where
he became the Post-master
from 1970 until his retire-
ment in 1984. Throughout his

active in the Postmaster Asso-
ciation.
Harry found his love of
music at a young age attend-
ing the Chicago Methodist
Church where his mother was
the church organist. He was
a member of the Methodist
Church in Edgerton and Sur-
prise Ariz. Singing and hum-
ming old Methodist hymns
and the music of his era gave
him a great sense of joy.
Harry loved the game of
baseball. The game was in his
DNA from the pickup games
in the streets of Chicago as a
kid to taking his bride (Elda)
on their honeymoon to Wrig-
ley Field. He coached little
league, pony league and the

Harry was a lifelong fan of
the Chicago Cubs. After over
90 years of cheering for his
beloved team, they did it! The
Cubs World Series victory in
2016 was a dream come true
for Harry.
After retiring, Harry win-
tered in Arizona for 30 years.
He loved his home in Sun City
Grand, where he met many
great friends through the years.
He was an avid golfer in both

His family was a joy to him.
He loved spending his birth-
day week in Hayward, Wis. at
the annual family reunion. His
infectious laugh and caring
nature will be dearly missed.

DiBenedetto early in the game was
himself, as he left his shoulder pads
on the bus.
DiBenedetto caught a short pass
and turned it into a long touchdown

The Stoughton High School
boys soccer team returns nine
players from last seasons
2-15-4 varsity squad, but it
has an almost completely new
defense.
The Vikings return their
starting goalie from 2017,
senior Matt Read, who col-
lected 70 saves in nine games,
as well as his backup, junior
Nolan Meyer, who had 33
saves in five games.
Junior Patrick Regan also
has goalie experience.
They also bring back
seniors Jake Deutsch (three
goals, two assists), Anders
Goetz (goal), Zander Hartberg
(six goals, two assists), Quin
Link, Nick Nowlan (goal,
two assists) and Ethan Wright
(assist). Juniors Matt Gille,
Jason Johnson and David Tes-
sier also return.
We have a team of great
speed, coach Dave Wermuth

naire. We will be looking at a
learning curve for our defense
where all but one player will
be new to the varsity level.

Vikings log 60 personal bests to start season

Stoughton girls swimming opened the
2017 season at home Tuesday night with a
90-77 victory over nonconference Elkhorn.
More importantly to coach Katie Tal-
madge, the host Vikings recorded 60 person-
al-best swims.
I dont usually look at the team scores
until I get home, she said. Im more inter-
ested in personal-best times. Our goal this
season is 560, so we have 500 left to go.
The biggest team Talmadge has had as a
head coach at Stoughton, the Vikings saw a
talented freshmen class log many of those
personal-best times
To that end, it was the teams newest
swimmer that Talmadge wanted to talk about
following the victory.
Molly (Bridges) is learning as she goes,
Talmadge said. She was working on the
blocks this week but she swam best times
every time she swam the 50-yard freestyle
tonight.
Its a little thing but a microcosm of the
way Talmadge is trying to build the program.
We stress every day about getting better
and swimming faster times, Talmadge said.
It makes the entire team better and in turn
moves the program forward.
Ava Schigur was close to a lifetime best
in the 100 butterfly, winning the event in
1:07.92.
Freshman Sofia Bormett fell a little more
than a second off the second oldest school
record in Stoughton history but won the 500
free in 5:28.61. Amber Castleberg set the
existing record (5:27.4) in 1998.
Bormett also claimed the 100 backstroke
in 1:17.2.
Maddie Kooima, Haley Foss, Ava Schigur
and Bormett opened the meet, winning the
200 medley relay in 2:05.6. Kooima added
the 100 free in 56.81 and the 100 backstroke
in 1:02.16.
Sophia Thompson, Evelyn Schaefer, Foss
and Schigur added the 200 free relay title in
1:52.62. Amy Schilcht, Schaefer, Kooima
and Bormett closed the meet out, beating
Elkhorns 400 free relay to the wall by more
than 18 seconds in 4:00.29.
Schilcht added the 200 free in 2:11.09 and
Schaefer took the 200 IM in 2:32.43.
Erin McCune led a 1-2-3 finish in the JV
200 free, dropping nine seconds.
Stoughton looks to move up standings
The 2016 Stoughton boys soccer team fin-
ished 1-4-1 in the Badger South last season,
with the lone win coming against Monroe
and its tie against Fort Atkinson.
The conference looks to be as strong at
the top, as usual, with seven-time defending
champion Oregon looking to be challenged
by 2016 runner-up Monona Grove. Stough-
ton coach Dave Wermuth wrote in a preview
questionnaire that he expects both Milton
and Madison Edgewood to also compete for
the title.
(Stoughton) has to be together as a unit to
find victory in conference, Wermuth wrote.
Oregon was undefeated in the conference
last year but has a lot of turnover from its
starting lineup this season.
The Panthers return junior honorable men-
tion all-conference forward Madison Condu-
ah and sophomore honorable mention mid-
fielder Collin Bjerke, but they graduate first-
team midfielders Calvin Schneider and Matt
Pearson, first-team defenders Ryan Lopez
and Connor Jones, first-team forward Alex
Verhagen, second-team midfielder Ian Mur-
phy and honorable mention goalie Ben Prew.
Monona Grove was 5-1 as the runner-up
first-team midfielder Alexander Klinkner,
senior first-team goalie Henry Hill-Gorman,
senior second-team forward Joey Scalissi,
senior second-team defender Ryan Keaveny,
junior second-team midfielder Jacob Van
Veghel and junior honorable mention mid-
fielder Bryan Reynosa.
The Silver Eagles lone loss from last
seasons all-conference selections is sec-
ond-team defender Samuel Runhaar.
Milton finished 3-2-1 with losses to Ore-
gon and Monona Grove and a tie with Madi-
son Edgewood in 2016.
The Red Hawks bring back senior first-
team defender Logan Servin, junior sec-
ond-team midfielder Alfonso Lopez and
senior second-team goalie Noah Rickman.
