ABSTRACT

Phosphate glasses have received a lot of attention of the researchers by their good
thermal-optical properties [1,2], as well as, high quantum efficiency when doped with
Nd3+ ion. These properties allow them to be applied as active laser medium, optical
fibers and optical amplifiers. It is known that during laser operation, the active
material undergoes a temperature increase [3], which can cause changes in its
properties, interfering in the laser performance. Some of these properties are thermal
diffusivity, specific heat and luminescence quantum efficiency. In this work we show
the luminescence quantum efficiency of PANK: Nd3+, as a function of temperature
(80- 480 K), which was investigated using the normalized lifetime thermal lens
technique [4]. This system presents high quantum efficiency at low Nd3+
concentration and at room temperature, ~100%, which decrease as temperature
increase. This set of analyzed samples shows a common behavior for all
concentrations near to 180 K, which indicates athermalization. A study in different
samples changing the concentration of the former components will be evaluated to
verify the behaviour in this temperature range will keep near 180 K. These studies
will be done using a single arm double interferometer proposed in a recent article [5].
