Waste is any substance which is discarded after primary use, or it is worthless, defective
and of no use. Examples include municipal solid waste(household trash/refuse),
hazardous waste, wastewater (such as sewage, which contains bodilywastes (feces and
urine) and surface runoff), radioactive waste, and others.
CLASSIFICATION
Domestic waste
Factory waste
E-waste
Construction waste
Agricultural waste
Bio-medical waste
Nuclear waste
EFFECTS OF WASTE
Rising global temperatures are expected to raise sea levels and change precipitation and
other local climate conditions.
Changing regional climates could alter forests, crop yields, and water supplies.
This could also affect human health, animals, and many types of ecosystems.
Deserts might expand into existing rangelands, and features of some of our national parks
might be permanently altered.
- Some countries are expected to become warmer, although sulfates might limit warming in
some areas. - Scientists are unable to determine which parts of those countries will become
wetter or drier, but there is likely to be an overall trend toward increased precipitation and
evaporation, more intense rainstorms, and drier soils. - Whether rainfall increases or
decreases cannot be reliably projected for specific areas.
- Reduce office paper waste by implementing a formal policy to duplex all draft reports and
by making training manuals and personnel information available electronically.
REUSE WASTE
- Reuse office furniture and supplies, such as interoffice envelopes, file folders, and paper.
- Use durable towels, tablecloths, napkins, dishes, cups, and glasses. - Use incoming
packaging materials for outgoing shipments.
- Encourage employees to reuse office materials rather than purchase new ones. -
Donate/Exchange old books, old clothes and, old computers.
Solid waste can be classified into different types depending on their source:
a) Household waste is generally classified as municipal waste,
b) Industrial waste as hazardous waste, and
c) Biomedical waste or hospital waste as infectious waste.
There are different categories of waste generated, each take their own time to degenerate
(as illustrated in the table below).
Hazardous waste
Industrial and hospital waste is considered hazardous as they may contain toxic substances.
Certain types of household waste are also hazardous. Hazardous wastes could be highly
toxic to humans, animals, and plants; are corrosive, highly inflammable, or explosive; and
react when exposed to certain things e.g. gases. India generates around 7 million tonnes of
hazardous wastes every year, most of which is concentrated in four states: Andhra Pradesh,
Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.
Household waste that can be categorized as hazardous waste include old batteries, shoe
polish, paint tins, old medicines, and medicine bottles.
In the industrial sector, the major generators of hazardous waste are the metal, chemical,
paper, pesticide, dye, refining, and rubber goods industries.
Direct exposure to chemicals in hazardous waste such as mercury and cyanide can be fatal.
Hospital waste
Surveys carried out by various agencies show that the health care establishments in India
are not giving due attention to their waste management. After the notification of the Bio-
medical Waste (Handling and Management) Rules, 1998, these establishments are slowly
streamlining the process of waste segregation, collection, treatment, and disposal. Many of
the larger hospitals have either installed the treatment facilities or are in the process of
doing so.
Methane 45 to 60
Carbon dioxide 40 to 60
Nitrogen 2 to 5
Oxygen 0.1 to 1
Ammonia 0.1 to 1
Hydrogen 0 to 0.2
Composting
Similar to sanitary landfilling
Yields a stable end product good soil conditioner and may be used as a base for fertilizers
Popular in developing countries
Decomposable organic matter is separated and composted
Methods
1. Open window composting
2. Mechanical composting
Salvaging
Materials like paper, metal, glass, rags, certain types of plastic etc. can be salvaged,
recycled, and reused
