Text Book Differential Equations and Linear Algebra, 4th edition - Stephen W. Goode, Scott A. Annin

Prerequisites Grade of C or better in Math 228 or equivalent.

Grading Policies To attain a grade of C or better your overall percentage must be at least 73. Exams must be
taken in class as scheduled without any exceptions.

Participation You are expected to be present. To be present:

1. Attend every class on time. Initial the sign in sheet at the beginning of class.
2. If you walk in late, you wont be able to sign in.
3. If you need to leave early be sure to let me know before class starts.
4. Class is only 50 minutes long, do not leave and come back during this time.
5. If you have a medical need that requires you to take breaks please let me know.
6. All electronic devices must be put away. Otherwise you may be asked to leave.
7. During class taking photos of the board is prohibited.
8. If you miss singing in at the start of class more than 2 times per exam period, you will not
receive the 1% credit.

Homework I will post weekly homework assignments on ilearn. There is no due date for homework. It is up
to you to keep up with the pace of the course by completing homework assignments weekly.

Exams There will be 4 exams during the semester and a final comprehensive exam at the end. Exam
questions will be based on the homework problems. If you keep up with the homework weekly
and KNOW how to solve the problems, you will do well on the exams. For most of you this is
the last math course you will take. By now you have learned that you can not throughly
understand the concepts in mathematics if you attempt to study multiple topics in a short
period of time. You may say I knew how to do the problems but when it came to the exam, I
just froze. In that case, it is very likely that you did not have a good grasp of the topics and the
only way to achieve that is to keep up with the pace and do each problem set weekly.

Calculators/Notes No calculators or note sheets will be allowed on the exams.

Exams (1,2,3,4) 60% (each, 15%) 9/11, 10/2, 10/23, 11/13

Final Exam 36% Friday, December 15, 1:30-4

Course Objectives Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
A. Solving or approximating the solutions of first order linear and non-linear equations.
B. Solving 2nd order linear differential equations and initial value problems.
C. Solving non-homogeneous 2nd order linear differential equations by means of the
Laplace transform.
D. Using Gaussian elimination to solve systems of linear algebraic equations.
E. Determining the transpose, inverse and determinants of matrices.
F. Transforming a higher order linear differential equation into a system of first order
equations. Use the resulting eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the system to determine
solutions of the higher order equation.
