Tip: Map Snapshots and Auto Recolour Grids

Use Map Snapshots and Auto Recolour Grids to get a zoomed in view of anomalies in your grid.

1. Zoom in and use Map > Create Snapshot to save the map extents as a new snapshot.

2. Then toggle the Auto Recolour Grid tool to stretch the colour ramp over the zoomed in area.

Geosoft Software Update 8.5.5

Geosoft Desktop Applications 8.5.5, including Oasis montaj 8.5.5, Target 8.5.5, and Target for ArcGIS 4.5.5, is now
available.

You can download the executable from My Geosoft, or update through Check for updates in your software. To check
for updates, click the Help menu, then click Updates > Check for Software Updates. When there is an update
available, click the Install button.

New Templates for Scatter and Triplot Analysis Tools

The Scatter Plot tool plots one channel against another channel in a tool where you can interactively interrogate the
data in your database and plot to a map.

You can dynamically link with the database, regardless of the type of data you are working with. Use channels from
geochemistry samples, drillhole data, or any other readings. Select and mask values, and colour classify the data
points using distributions or other fields.

Several new Scatter Plot and Triplot templates for geochemical data analysis are available in Oasis montaj and Target
8.5. You can find the full list of templates and references in About Scatter Plot Templates.

Oasis montaj and Target users with Geochemistry or Geophysics extensions can find these tools in

Database Tools > Geostatics Toolkit > Scatter Analysis... and

Database Tools > Geostatics Toolkit > Triplot Analysis...

Extracting a Profile from a Grid

Extract a Profile from a Grid is a commonly used and very useful function. We've looked at how to display profiles
along sections before.
You can use the GRIDPROF GX to extract a data profile from a grid and place it in a new line of the current database.

This capability can be useful for a variety of applications including modeling and removing local trends during
gridding.
Here's how it works:

1. Start with your grid displayed on a map. Go to Grid and Image > Grid Utilities > Grid Profile...
If you do not have a current database, then you will be prompted to enter a name for a new database that will be
created for your profile output.

2. Select up to 5 grids and enter a New line name.

3. Specify the location by digitizing on the map, or manually using one of the other options.

4. The grid(s) will be sampled to a new line in the database.

Import Attributes to GDB with Shape Databases

Have a polygon or polyline ArcGIS shapefile and want to get the coordinates of the vertices?

Use Database > Import > ArcView Shape File(s)... and select Import data to: New database with shape database(s)
to create a second database with all the vertices and attributes.

This is useful for working with attributed data such as transportation, drainages, or lakes; for creating mask files; or
for creating a grid from vector data such as elevation contours.

Geological mapping: Strike and Dip Symbols

If you have strike and dip measurements from surface observations, you can add geological strike/dip symbols to
your Oasis montaj or Target plan map.

1. Start with a database that contains your observations. You'll need East and North locations, and Dip and Strike
channels.

2. Go to Map Tools > Symbols > Strike-Dip Symbols. Use the Locate button to position the legend.

3. Plot the symbols on your current map.

The azimuth convention for strike values is assumed, with the dip-direction 90 CW from the input strike direction.
If you have dip-direction values, create a new channel where Strike = DipDir-90.

Drillhole Planning in 3D
The new 3D drillhole planning tool in Oasis montaj 8.5, Target 8.5, and Target for ArcGIS 4.5 allows you
to interactively draw and position proposed drillholes in the 3D Viewer within context of other geological,
geophysical, and geochemical 3D data.

1. Start with a drillhole project.

2. Create a 3D map with your holes and other relevant data such as a surface, voxel, or DXF.
3. In the 3D Viewer, click on the Plan a Drillhole tool.
4. Use the Reference Plane tab to position the plane for digitizing. You can re-position interactively or manually,
and modify the clipping of the data in your view.
5. Switch to the Drillhole tab to position the Collar and Target of your planned hole. You can calculate the collar
using a DEM grid, and extend the hole through your target.
6. Click on Save to add the proposed hole to your drillhole project.
