It governs how much the air-fuel mixture is compressed before it is ignited, which
inturn power.

In general increasing CR increases Power for the same CC engine. But there are
various other factors that come into picture which is why there is a threshold to how
high CR can go.

Do check out this article for further more information on how CR aects engine life
and what should the ideal CR should be.

It's the ratio of the Actual volume of the cylinder to the Clearance volume!
Generally 13:1 in petrol engines, Means it compresses the volume to 1/13th the volume
which it actually occupied.

Happens During the compression stroke :P

Compression ratio is the ratio, between the volume of theSearch Quora
cylinder when, the
piston is at the top position (Right Image) or Top Dead Center and the bottom
position (Left Image) or Bottom Dead Center.

The piston reaches the TDC position at the end of the compression stroke.

The piston reaches the BDC position at the end of the power stroke.

So a Compression ratio of 14:1, would mean that the volume at BDC (V1) is 14
times the volume at TDC (V2).

Compression ratio of engine is ratio of total cylinder volume to that of clearance
volume considered for single cylinder.

Total cylinder volume consists of stroke volume and clearance volume.

Stroke volume is volume swept by piston in cylinder I.e between tdc and bdc.

Clearance volume is volume between piston at tdc and cylinder head.

We can divide total cylinder volume in to n no of parts each having area of clearance
volume.

Let clearance volume be 100 and total cylinder volume be 1000 cc respectively.

Thus at end of compression everything is compressed to 100 cc , thus it has

compressed to 1/10 th .

Thus we can say that cr is 10:1

It signies fuel is compressed to 1/10 of total volume.

Higher cr for diesel and lower for petrol and between them is for cng engines.

higher cr means greater peak pressure at end of compression resulting in more power
as more force is there to push piston down.

Compression Ratio is dened as the ratio of Maximum engine volume to minimum

engine volume. In Mechanical Terminology, its ratio of Total Volume to Clearance
Volume. It is fundamental specication of engine.

For Spark Ignition engines, the ratio will be around 10:1 to 15:1. For compression
ignition engines it'll be 18:1 to 23:1

When it comes to understanding compression ratio, you need to know about 2

volumes:
1. Swept Volume. (Vs)

2. Clearance Volume. (Vc)

Swept volume is the volume that the piston head sweeps as it moves from the
Bottom Dead Center (BDC) to the Top Dead Center (TDC) or vice-versa.
So, essentially, Swept volume is the volume of the cylinder.

When you place the cylinder head on the cylinder, you will notice that when the
piston reaches the TDC, it doesn't reach the cylinder head, but instead forms a small
space with the head. This small space between the head and the piston is called the
Clearance Volume.

Now, let's say that we have another quantity called Total Volume, Vt.

Then, Vt = Vc + Vs.

Coming to your question:

Compression ratio is simply the ratio of Total Volume to Swept Volume.

Compression Ratio = Vt/Vs

Or, r = (Vs+Vc)/Vs

Generally, petrol engines have a low compression ratio, typically 6 or 7 while diesel
engines have very high ratios close to 16 or 17.

The compression ratio is the ratio of the volume of the cylinder and the combustion
chamber when the piston is at the bottom, and the volume of the combustion
chamber when the piston is at the top.

In simple word, it is the ratio of the total volume of the cylinder to the volume above
the piston when it is at its top most position.

If you want to know the detailed concept about it then you are welcome to ask.

Hope you nd this useful.

Thank you.
