The first module is an introduction to the basic concepts of the ecosystem. It deals with the
various services offered by ecosystem and discusses the flow of energy and cycling of material
which are central to the ecosystem functioning. ( i, iii)
The module delves in depth with the environment consequences of the current growth pattern of
human population. It explains how with wise and careful planning various natural resources can
be utilized for the betterment of mankind and also outlines some method of utilizing waste.(iv,
iii)
It discusses the concept of SD and the need to transit from unsustainable to sustainable
development. It also describes urban problem related to energy. The module also defines
environmental ethics and explains the issues and possible solutions.(iv, iii)
The module discusses the various legislations enacted at international level to control
environmental degradation. It fives names and objectives of various international conventions
and treaties related to various environmental issues. (ii, iii)
The different parameters of environmental components that determine environmental quality and
outlines the standards and quality measurement criteria of the different environmental
components. The importance of planning, impact assessment, auditing in environment quality
management is discussed. The need for eco-friendly technology is also explained. (i, iii)
