Environment Management course learning outcomes are aligned with the MBA programme
Learning outcomes.

i. Realise that environment protection and resource conservation have to be considered


when business is conducted. (4)
ii. Identify the various global and national environmental problems. (1)
iii. Awareness of the serious challenge environmental problems pose to both our planet and
our way of life. (1,4)
iv. Work together towards a sustainable future that looks beyond issues like profit, quality
standards, legislation and regulatory controls. (4,1)

4. About Environment Management Course


In the early seventies environmental protection became a major societal concern ,but now more
than then there is a need for environmental awareness and a concern to protect it. The course
deals with importance and interrelationship of various components of the environment, issues
pertaining to natural resources, development and environment and environment and health. It
highlights the importance of conservation, eco- friendly technologies and environmental quality
management.

5. Course design and its relationship to course learning objectives


This course has five modules. Each module has specific learning objectives, mentioned in the
previous section. The learning objectives focused is given in parentheses. Bold and underlined
numbers indicate the modules primary learning objectives; others are secondary.

Module 1- Introduction to Ecology and Environment

The first module is an introduction to the basic concepts of the ecosystem. It deals with the
various services offered by ecosystem and discusses the flow of energy and cycling of material
which are central to the ecosystem functioning. ( i, iii)

Module 2- Human impact on Natural Environment

The module delves in depth with the environment consequences of the current growth pattern of
human population. It explains how with wise and careful planning various natural resources can
be utilized for the betterment of mankind and also outlines some method of utilizing waste.(iv,
iii)

Module 3- Sustainable Development

It discusses the concept of SD and the need to transit from unsustainable to sustainable
development. It also describes urban problem related to energy. The module also defines
environmental ethics and explains the issues and possible solutions.(iv, iii)

Module 4- Global response

The module discusses the various legislations enacted at international level to control
environmental degradation. It fives names and objectives of various international conventions
and treaties related to various environmental issues. (ii, iii)

Module 5- Industry Response to environmental Issues

The different parameters of environmental components that determine environmental quality and
outlines the standards and quality measurement criteria of the different environmental
components. The importance of planning, impact assessment, auditing in environment quality
management is discussed. The need for eco-friendly technology is also explained. (i, iii)

Each student must select a relevant environmental issue and write an assignment on it.
Presentations (10 marks)
1. Presentation would be group wise. The class would be divided into groups. Every
Wednesday one group will have to present an environmental issue that featured in the
previous weeks paper. An in-depth study must be done into the topic and be presented.
Every student in the group must participate in the presentation.
2. Topics would be given in advance based on which the group will have to make
presentations
