3.7.4 Case: Green & Lean Laundry

An important differentiating mark in many industries is the standard and quality of the textile,
consequently great attention has to be paid to its care. At the same the industrial users expect
professional textile care operators to work fast, thriftily and economically.

Modern laundries face great challenge in todays ever growing environment conscious society and at
the same time this represents exciting opportunities for those who are willing to contribute that extra
effort towards creating sustainable professional textile care environment.

As a responsible manufacturer of entire laundry system, STAHL, has carefully considered each area of
modern laundry operation for development with focus on optimizing each individual process of
Washing, Drying and Finishing

The following article will explain how STAHL has developed technologies for each individual process
of laundry to bring together a successful, modern, cost effective and sustainable laundry system which
is reflected in our thinking as the Green and Lean Laundry.

The philosophy behind this is sustainable laundry practices saving each drop of water and energy
both represented by blue color drop embraced by a green leave and collected in a pot message is

technological developments for each process of the laundry

The Washing line

PTS 3 the 3rd generation PTS-drive:

The PTS 3 power transmission system developed by us does not require any maintenance and only
uses as much energy as actually needed for the particular job at hand. It reduces, for example, power
consumption during the spin cycle depending on the drying stage of the laundry. The PTS 3 with the

pioneering efficiency motor lessens current peaks, detects and controls unbalances, ensures a quiet
operation, infinitely variable wash and spin revolutions, a gentle starting of the drum as well as a fast
and wear free breaking of the drum without any mechanical break components.

SPEED-FLOW hydrodynamic water flooding: Subjecting the wash load during the wash process to a
changing water pressure (s. Diagram) in addition to mechanical agitation saves energy, water, time
and detergents. With the SPEED-FLOW-System we have achieved this path-breaking design: The
round Eco-Drum revolves in an outer drum that is geometrically optimized rather than round itself.
Due to this construction in combination with the perforated scoops, this achieves a hydrodynamic
performance, offering you this exact benefit of increased efficiency. This construction also reduces
the space between outer and inner drum, resulting in less unused water

PULS pendulum overflow system:

The pendulum overflow system is another example of our highly developed art of engineering. With
PULS- Technology dirt particles bonded in the suds float up to the water surface to be drained off
via the overflow. The water of the rinsing bath remains clean so that you can reduce many wash
programs by a complete rinse process. This in turn results in the advantages of shorter wash times,
a reduction of energy and water consumption, a higher degree of cleanliness and less wear and tear
on the linen. By adding an integrated water reclamation system you can achieve another marked
reduction of your water consumption.

Drying Line - the plate heat exchanger

The integrated plate heat exchanger ensures an optimum energy balance. First recycled hot air flows
over a heat exchanger, which then pre-heats the cool fresh air drawn in from outside using the stored
heat. The tumble dryer consumes even less energy with this optional equipment. This revolutionary
system offering the potential for great savings is only available in tumble dryers made by STAHl.

Intelligent recovery of circulating air

recovery of circulating air as a standard feature protects the environment and saves operating costs.
This intelligent process uses and recycles around 60% of the exhaust air. during the drying process,
only water vapour is discharged. While still hot, the dry air components are fed back into the drum via
the heating unit.

Radial airflow for rapid drying

radial airflow ensures particularly fast, gentle and thorough drying. Hot air blows diagonally from top
to bottom through the stainless steel drum that is perforated all the way around. Temperatures
remain the same everywhere. during this process, the drum reversal feature supports radial airflow
with changing falling heights of the linen so that even delicate textiles are evenly dried in the shortest
possible time.

Longer ironing path with higher performance.

The new super-chest is an innovation and an absolutely unique feature of the chest technology. Only
the dimensionally stable heating band technology offers a roll coverage under pressure of true 180.
Through the use of this new technology the ironing path under pressure is increased by up to 20%
another feature guaranteeing you an optimized linen finish

Double shell, fully insulated hood

The heated bed ironers are equipped with a robust INSULTAED metal hood. This solid and useful cover
ensures an energy saving heat insulation and reduces heat loss to a minimum. It can be easily lifted
off in order to clean the chest of the ironer.

Intelligent 3rd generation PTS-drive offers efficiency at the highest level

The specially developed PTS-drive controls the energy consumption of the motors at the respective
torque by combining the electronic performance component with the intelligent micro-processor
control unit. This drive technology is economical, requires little maintenance and is free from wear.
Uneconomical and high-maintenance energy consuming components as for example chains or v-belts
are a thing of the past.
