IV. Madrid ( 15 pts. )
1. Why did he challenge A. Luna & W.E. Retana? ( 5pts. )
a) Antonio Luna
The two men were present during a reunion of Filipino exiles in Madrid in 1890,
wherein Luna got drunk and made a sarcastic remark about Nelly and Rizal because he was
courting Nelly that time. A heated argument started between the two where one challenged
the other. It did not push through once Luna already sobered up.
b) Wenceslao E. Retana
Retana, was a Spanish scholar and newspaperman who wrote an article in La Epoca
about the tenants in Calamba stating that the reason they were ejected from their lands by
the Dominicans was their failure to pay their rentals. Angered by Retanas insults or
assertions, Rizal challenged the former to a duel and that only Retanas blood or apology
could vindicate the good name of Rizals family and friends. Retana was warned with
Rizals talents and publicly apologized in the newspaper instead.

in. He also showed integrity and selflessness and always chose the right thing despite the
situations disfavor for Rizal.

V. Second Home Coming ( 30 pts. )

1. Discuss briefly his reasons for leaving Europe. ( 5pts. )
Rizal left Europe because life was unbearable in Europe due to his political
differences with M.H del Pilar and other Filipinos in Spain, and he wanted to talk to
Governador General Despusol about his Borneo Colonization Project. He would also lead
a Propaganda Movement in HK. He also wants to be with his family, since they celebrated
Christmas in Hong Kong.

2. Discuss briefly his three major activities in Hongkong. ( 10 pts. )

a) This is where Rizal planned a new organization which was later to be named, La Liga
Filipina. The source of this information was a letter from Graciano Lopez Jaena written to
Jose Rizal, while he was in Hong Kong which mentioned his founding an association
named La Liga in Hong Kong. Also, when the revolution started, statements were made to
authorities that the Liga statutes were sent by Rizal from Hong Kong.
b) This is where Rizal formed the idea of establishing a Filipino colony in North Borneo
(Sabah). And from Hong Kong, he went to North Borneo (Sabah) and successfully
negotiated the terms of the settlement with W.B Pryor, the administrator of North Borneo.
His intention was to relocate his family there and around 300 families from Calamba who
were evicted and being persecuted by the Dominican friars for failure to pay the rent on
the land they are tilling.
c) Rizal started writing in Tagalog the 3rd volume of his novel (the first is the "Noli Me
Tangere", and the second is the "El Filibusterismo.") - Makamisa is an unfinished novel
written by Filipinopatriot and writer Jos Rizal.

3. Relate his three writings made in Hongkong to his dreamland. ( 10 pts. )

a) The Constitution of La Liga Filipina: Rizal wrote the Constitution of La Liga Filipina to
encourage education, agriculture and commerce, defend the people against violence and
injustice, study the application of reforms, provide mutual protection and, ultimately, unite
the Filipino people. All of the objectives stated in the said constitution are parallel to the
hypothetical dreamland that Rizal aims to achieve in the Borneo project,
b) The Red Hand: Rizal wrote The Red Hand to defend the Filipino people against the
accusations of Spanish that the frequent fires in Manila during that time were intended by
Filipino rebels. In the context of the Borneo project, this particular article embodied Rizals
patriotic spirit which is the basis of the Borneo project. Rizal intended the settlers of Borneo
to rule themselves with their own laws, and in connection with The Red Hand, free from
the oppression of the Spanish government.
c) A Visit To Victoria Gaol: Rizal wrote about his visit to Victoria Gaol in a prison in Hong
Kong. In here, Rizal was affected by the decrepit state of the prison as well as the prisoners.
This can be related to the Borneo project in a sense that Rizal saw that the Filipino people
was imprisoned by Spain in their own land and he intended to free the from just oppression.
Rizal wanted the settlers in Borneo to be free of forced labor or be forced to serve in the
military.
