Interns are usually university students, or university graduates who have not yet found
employment. Interns are less frequently college students (under 23) or older "career changers".
An intern is someone who works in a temporary position for an employer that operates in an
industry they are interested in working in. Unlike conventional employment, internships have an
emphasis on training, rather than employment itself.
WHY DO AN INTERNSHIP?
When it comes to getting that job, you can never be too informed. This useful free eBook covers
job search trends, unusual interview questions, what hiring managers are thinking, and more.
JobTestPrep also has comprehensive information on all types of interviews.
Companies offer students internships for a variety of both short and long-term reasons:
Short-term
In the short-term, internships provide employers with cheap (and sometimes even free) labor, for
what is usually low-level office based tasks, such as photocopying, filing or report drafting.
Long-term
Long-term, employers can use internships as an effective way of advertising their graduate jobs
and/or schemes to students. Graduate job surveys suggest that almost half of all graduate
employers hire at least 20% of their ex-interns for graduate jobs and training schemes. It is
highly likely that graduates will return to the organization that hired them as an intern for full-
time employment after leaving university.
The prospect of hiring ex-interns after graduating is also very appealing to employers because
these graduates already understand the company and the job they will be doing. Ex-interns
require little or no training.
INTRODUCTION
The main objective of the Industrial Training is to experience and understand real life situations
in industrial organizations and their related environments and accelerating the learning process of
how students knowledge could be used in a realistic way. In addition to that, industrial training
also makes one understand the formal and informal relationships in an industrial organization so
as to promote favorable human relations and teamwork. Besides, it provides the exposure to
practice and apply the acquired knowledge hands - on in the working environment. Industrial
training also provides a systematic introduction to the ways of industry and developing talent and
attitudes, so that one can understand how Human Resource Development works. Moreover,
students can gain hands-on experience that is related to the students majoring so that the student
can relate to and widen the skills that have been learnt while being in university. Industrial
training also exposes the students to the real career world and accustoms them to an
organizational structure, business operation and administrative functions. Furthermore, students
implement what they have learned and learn more throughout this training. Besides, students can
also gain experience to select the optimal solution in handling a situation. During industrial
training students can learn the accepted safety practices in the industry. Students can also
develop a sense of responsibility towards society.
IMPORTANCE OF INTERNSHIP
Why are internships important? There are very few courses at university that provide graduates
with a specific professional qualification. It is generally down to you to define and implement
your own personal career plans. An internship can be of considerable benefit to you in this
respect. Internships will introduce you to potential future work environments and you will be
able to decide whether these meet your career wishes and interests. You can also acquire
important supplementary skills during an internship and make contact with potential future
employers.
In summary: An internship will make it easier for you to find work and get off to a good start in
your career. In many sectors, such as the media industries, successful job applicants now need to
demonstrate that they have already completed an internship.
Internships represent a cross-over point between university and career, and will not only help
you in your career, but also in planning your studies. The experience you gain during an
internship will indicate how you should structure your future studies, particularly when it comes
to deciding what aspects you should focus on. An internship and your study focus will thus help
you establish your individual career profile.
PURPOSE OF INTERNSHIP:
The purpose of Industrial Training is to expose students to real work of environment experience
and at the same time, to gain the knowledge through hands on observation and job execution.
From the industrial training, the students will also develop skills in work ethics, communication,
management and others. Moreover, this practical training program allows students to relate
theoretical knowledge with its application in the manufacturing industry.
NEED OF STUDY
A summer internship with a large firm will give you practical work experience in your field of
interest. An internship with a good firm will add great value to your resume and will give you an
edge at the time job placement. This is of even greater significance if you do not hold any prior
work experience in the field you have chosen to pursue.
The main issues may be human, economical, functional etc, but the construction and/or
application of some kind of research instrument are the focus of the study. The analysis of the
research findings (e.g. clients responses to questionnaire about changing product specifications)
should take place, resulting in proposals about how to manage relevant aspects of the
organisations future. Explanatory- a study, which would involve studying relationships between
different
variables like a cause & effect relationship study. Descriptive- a study that would need an in-
depth portrayal of an accurate profile of events.
MANAGERIAL SKILS:
Since the automotive industry is known for its ability to adapt to new trends and technology, its
important that workers within the sector maintain a comprehensive and multifaceted skill set.
While the needs of a specific employer may change from year to year, there are several traits that
are commonly considered when recruiting skilled workers in the automotive industry.
Change Leader
Given the constantly changing and ever-evolving nature of the automotive industry, many
organizations want employees who demonstrate strong managerial prowess. More importantly
than simply supervising and coaching peers, the role of a leader demands someone who is able to
serve as a role model on a day-to-day basis by setting a positive example and ensuring
productivity. Organizations change due to a variety of external and internal forces, managers
who know how to effectively communicate change in an organization are essential to
maintaining productivity and quality thru an organizational change. The open-minded, forward-
looking employee is always viewed as an asset within a high-performing organization.
Problem-Solving Skills
Strong problem-solving skills are essential to nearly every role in the automotive industry in
2015. While common hardware is constantly evolving, this change often uncovers new and
unforeseen problems that can only be diagnosed by a skilled and knowledgeable professional.
Whether this skill comes from years of hands-on experience or a background of professional
training within the automotive industry, the ability to think logically and take a proactive
approach to solving everyday and unexpected problems is a highly desirable trait in 2015. The
tool that automakers desire most is your ability to communicate complex issues in written and
oral scenarios. Due to the complex nature of the manufacturing and assembly plants, a problem
is rarely solved without the input of stakeholders from other areas of the organization. The
ability to effectively communicate technical information in the context of solving an issue is a
GREAT asset in these large complex manufacturing environments.
Operational Analysis
The ability to analyze processes is an excellent trait to possess when targeting employment in the
automotive sector. Automotive companies need analytical-minded individuals who are able to
assess situations through operational statistics as well as first-hand observations as a means of
identifying and resolving issues in workflow, operations or productivity. Professional training in
Six-Sigma and LEAN methodologies is often viewed as a great asset for employees in the
automotive industry. Due to the large production volume associated with the automotive
industry, the ability to recognize opportunities to save time and material is always on the radar.
Work Ethic
Due to the demanding nature of the automotive industry (large volume, fast paced and just in
time sequencing), long hours and weekend work are part of the culture. Employees that are
geared towards the companys organizational goals are often rewarded with long-term
employment and opportunities for advancement. The automotive industry rewards employees
who love their work and are in lock step with company production, financial, and safety goals.
Automotive companies do a great job of separating the dedicated employees from the employees
that are just doing the job. Automotive companies have an unequaled pride in their brand and
insist that all of their employees have a similar mindset. The automotive companies will
provide an environment that will allow you to show off your work ethic or allow you to find a
job in another industry.
Confidentiality
Employers are also looking for staff members who possess a strong understanding of workplace
confidentiality. Because some projects in the automotive industry involve highly sensitive
information, proprietary technology or otherwise confidential information, employers want to
make sure their employees are able to contain company secrets. Previous experience in this area,
either through information security or otherwise, can go a long way in advancing your career
through the automotive industry. If an employer asks you about proprietary information or
confidential information, chances are they want to know how much you will divulge not what
you divulge.
Industry Familiarity
The automotive industry isnt a field for everyone, and employers want to make sure that they
are hiring workers who are fit for the job at hand. Even if you dont have first-hand knowledge in
the automotive sector, industry-specific training or education can go a long way in instilling the
basic fundamentals needed for many positions in the automotive industry. Specialized training or
certification always looks good on a resume, but it is no substitute for hands-on experience and
knowledge.
