RESEARCH OF THE ARCHITECTURAL STYLE:
SECOND EMPIRE
Building 1: 1302 Main St.

Exterior Faade: Art Studio on first floor and Residential

Space above

This building is an example of the Second Empire

Architectural Style. This style reached its peak popularity
in the 1850s-1880s, after the Civil War; it was inspired
by Napoleon IIIs rebuilding effort of Paris. The mansard
roof is the defining characteristic of the Second Empire
Style. The mansard roof, [which has four sloping sides,
each of which become steeper halfway down], allows for
an full floor in the building.

CONCEPT STATEMENT

The duplex-up condo will serve as an oasis for Eric to both work from home and entertain
friends. The living space will be furnished with an abundance of comfortable, large scale
seating for when he hosts soccer match-viewing events. The visual emphasis will focus on
a custom-designed built in storage piece with display space that will house his electronics
and also serve as display space for his soccer memorabilia collection. The color scheme is
inspired by an artwork by Piet Mondrian; the space will be primarily finished in white
neutral tones with accents of black and highly saturated hues of yellow, blue and green.
The blue, green and yellow will refer to his Brazilian heritage. All furniture and finishes will
be modern, angular, simple forms and arranged symmetrically. Texture will be smooth and
the limited use of pattern will be geometric in nature, such as stripes. High-lacquered
pieces will create drama and contribute to a luxurious environment.
COLOR PALETTE: INSPIRATION

This tetrad color palette appeals to the simplicity

desired for the space. As it is in this painting, the
colors are too highly saturated, the white is too
bright, the black is too defined. To adjust it for a
living space, the white will become a warm white
and the black a dark grey. The muted yellow will
become much brighter and the green will stay very
similar. There will be a subtle power play between
these two bold colors, with the green winning. The
blue will become a deeper, bright navy and will
serve with the grey as a dark, neutral accent color.
Bright stainless steel fixtures will complement this
color scheme.
