various system components like compressors, condensers, driers etc is
the key to enabling a system to operate efficiently without the risk of costly
breakdowns.
With this in mind, WSS advises that the most economical solution to
stay compliant with the regulations is to replace the existing R-22 with a
suitable, non ozone-depleting alternative such as Unicool R417A. R-417A
has very similar working parameters in marine applications to R-22,
and the changeover does not require costly system modifications. Other
R-22 replacement alternatives are available (R-407C, R-404A, R-419A,
R-134a, R-422D, R-427A, and more) but these options will demand costly
modifications and have limited thermal properties.
Recognising the limitations of the vessels crew in handling such an
important project, WSS offers qualified and highly skilled refrigeration
technicians to handle these retrofits. The companys world-wide network
has successfully performed more than 1,300 such changeovers in recent
years, both during dry-dockings and on vessels whilst they were in service.
By sailing between ports and completing the project at sea, there are no
interruptions to the day-to-day functioning of the refrigeration systems, or
delays for the ship. WSS ensures safe and legal destruction of the old R-22
as part of their Enviro-Return Management Programme.
On average, each project takes between five to 15 days. Ship owners
are advised to plan their changeovers in good time to meet the deadline
of 31 December 2009.

New seating for 187 passengers has been installed in the main lounge,
where new flooring and carpeting has been laid. The original toilets have
been stripped out and rebuilt, while new bulkheads, deckheads and

Greater flexibility can be achieved by
operating two smaller engines driving two
propellers because, at lower speeds, the ships
Master has the option to operate on one
engine alone, working at its optimum efficiency.
Furthermore, the greater propulsion area
covered by two smaller propellers is reckoned
to equate to about a 10% efficiency gain when
compared to a single screw solution.
The concept of feathering one of two
propellers at lower speeds, so that the other
can run at higher output, closer to optimum
efficiency, is by no means new. Developed as a
more efficient alternative to locking or clutching
out an unneeded shaft line, feathering sees the
propeller blades rotated through 90 degrees
so that they are in parallel to flow. Putting a
propeller in the feathered position during an
emergency or at low speed minimises drag, with
consequent fuel savings.
However, feathering techniques to date have
featured a complex and often cumbersome
mechanical solution, or hubs that cannot offer

Odense Steel Shipyard to cease

newbuildings
Following the recent announcement that Denmarks Fredericia Shipyard,
currently located in Fredericia, is to move repair operations to Odense,
the Odense shipyard has now announced that it is to cease newbuildings.
Historically, Odense Steel Shipyard (Lind) has had a very special role in
the A P Moller Maersk Group. Due to the expansion of the yard capacity
in low cost countries in the Far East and most recently with Chinas
determined endeavours of becoming the worlds largest shipbuilding
nation, the competitive situation for the shipbuilding industry has become
increasingly difficult in recent years.
Regardless of the even huge effort to improve the yards competitiveness
with investments in new technology and streamlining of the production, the
yard has run up very considerable annual deficits and must today realise
that it is impossible to attract orders, which are commercially sound.
In this light the Board of the yard has decided to discontinue

He says MOLTE prefers to work with known yards, developing contracts
with facilities in Portugal, Dubai and Singapore, to ensure dock space
and price for a specified number of vessels. The contracts are usually not
vessel-specific although there are considerations as to whether services
such as tank-cleaning facilities are available which is obligatory for crude
oil & products tankers.
MOLTE does conduct shipyard audits, but mainly with yards which it
has not had dealings before. Alan says that while expense will be an issue,
these investigations are often more about quality than cost. This would
mainly focus on ISO accreditation, the facilities themselves, use of sub-
contractors, requirements of contractors arranged by the owners, he says.
Cost would only come into the equation when they were compared to
other yards whom we have a well established rapport.

ships have actually been delivered so far this year than was originally
anticipated. The contracting boom of recent years as left yards to dope
with an extremely demanding output schedule, Clarkson notes in a
recent report, leading to increased slippage of vessel delivery dates.
Additionally, since the economic crisis took hold, owners with boxships on
order have come under intense financial strain, and are reluctant to add
to their fleet at a time when lack of demand has led to the idling of vast
amounts of capacity.
A number of owners have therefore successfully negotiated delays to
the delivery of new ships and sometimes this has suited not only them, but
builders too. Clarksons July estimate indicated that 145 container vessels
of some 600,000 teu had been delivered so far this year, but this figure
was only 60% of expected new deliveries. So far it is not clear how far it has
slipped. The balance of ships may be delivered during the second half of

Most classification societies have launched energy-saving initiatives for
the owners and operators of both new and existing tonnage. However,
Germanischer Lloyd (GL), through its consulting subsidiary FutureShip, has
conducted a range of studies aimed at cutting fuel consumption aboard
existing vessels and improving the propulsive efficiency of new designs.
FutureShips ECO-Solutions consultancy service offers ship operators
a service identifying the areas in which the largest energy savings and
fuel emission reductions may be achieved. Once such areas have been
identified, a cost benefit analysis can be carried out to determine the
quantum of savings and the investment necessary to achieve them.
The classification society gives the example of a bulbous bow designed
for optimal performance at the bow of container ships sailing at 25 knots.
One German customer, operating a fleet of 8,000 teu vessels, realised
that the bulbous bows fitted to his ships were optimised for 25 knots,
rather than the service speed of around 18 knots which was more usual in
todays market.
He approached FutureShip and asked them to assess the pros and
cons of replacing the bulbous bow with a new optimised for 18-knot
operation whist still capable of operating effectively at design speed. The
existing bow was parametrically modelled with key variables adjusted in
turn to determine the effects of wave and frictional resistance and dynamic
flotation. A lengthy validation study was then carried out to ensure that the
results were reliable.
The savings were substantial. FutureShip says there was a 2.5%
reduction in resistance, fuel consumption and emissions at 18 knots, and
a 1% saving at the 25-knot design speed. The class society then worked
