Pareto User Guide

Version 2017.01
Features
Ultra-fast FEA
Multi-load topology optimization
Multi-body topology optimization
Stress constraints
Displacement constraints
Casting constraints
Symmetry constraints
Non-design constraints
Pareto-optimal designs
Large-scale problems
Computer Specs
Topology optimization is computationally intensive.
Pareto is designed to exploit multi-core CPUs
It is highly recommended that you use a computer with
- I7 quad-core, or equivalent
- At least 8 GB RAM
- Preferably a NVidia or AMD Graphics Card

The examples here were executed on a Windows Dell XPS Laptop

with the following specs
- I7-6700HQ 2.5 GHz quad-core
- 16 GB RAM
- NVidia GTX 970M
ParetoWin and ParetoMac Setup
ParetoWin Setup

1. Contact support@sciartsoft.com to get installer

2. Double click, and follow instructions

3. Install Visual Studio Redistributable and Pareto

ParetoWin & Examples
ParetoWin will be installed as a standard Windows Application

A ParetoExamples folder will also be created on your desktop

Pareto Licenses
If you do not have access to a permanent license, you will
see the following message. Press OK.

Press OK to use the temporary license (until expiry).

ParetoMac Setup

ParetoMac installation is similar to that of ParetoWin,

except that you will start with a .dmg file.
ParetoMac Setup

1. If you dont have Pareto.dmg, contact support@sciartsoft.com

2. Double click Pareto.dmg; this will open the app below

3. Double click to open ParetoMac

Basic FEA & Topology Optimization
Load a Project
We will start by loading a predefined project

Navigate to the ParetoExamples folder

Load project
Select LBracketProject.prj
Model Loaded

Mouse/keys

Left: Rotate
Right: Pan
Middle: Zoom
For zoom, you can also use
the control-key and left
mouse button
Basic FEA
Run FEA on LBracket
Basic TopOpt
Run TopOpt with default parameters
Display Options

Select Stress Field

Select transparent geometry
Loading STL files and
Saving Projects
Loading a new model
Currently, only STL format (ASCII or binary) is supported in Pareto.
Future versions will support STEP and other popular CAD formats
Close and restart Pareto
Select MKS units
Material
No material has Select Alloy Steel & Apply
been applied
Applying Restraints
Select the Select the second face Select structural loads
first face (XYZFixed) & apply

Tip: To unselect a face,

pick the face again
Applying Load
Select Force & apply -60000
Newtons along - Y

Select

Select Transparent
under Display
FEA
Increase mesh quality

Impose Z-Symmetry

Observe the safety factors.

There is room for removing material
TopOpt
Set topopt constraints

Select Keep fixed faces

Remove 50% material

Observe the safety factors.

We can remove additional material
(see next section)
Save project
Material, loads, etc. are
saved in a .prj file

Save project as
ThreeHoleBracketProject.prj
(not as .txt)
Stress constrained optimization
Restart
Restart Pareto
Load project

Load ThreeHoleBracketProject.prj
saved previously

Observe the geometry, material, loads

and restraints have been loaded.
Stress Constrained Optimization
We will remove as
much material as possible

Target vol.fraction
of 0.01

Note that the safety factor of 1.0

has been reached (optimal design)
