Examples of basic identification and code indications illustrating the application of safety colours 4 Foreword ‘This British Standard has been prepared under the direction of the Mechanical Engineering Standards Committee. ‘This revision of 8S 1710 : 1976 is published to give further clarification and supersedes the 1975 edition which is withdrawn. ‘This standard remains in alignment with |SO/R 508 ‘Identification colours for pipes conveying fluids in liquid ‘or gascous conditions in land installations and on board) ‘hips’ which is published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Table 1 gives the besic identi fication colours but supplements ISO/R 608 by providing 1 basic colour for ‘ether liquids’ an a further colour for ventilation ducts and conduits for electrical services, The previous marking to denote a hazard (yellow with black ‘diagonal stripes) has been omitted from this revision because of the use of this symbol in BS 5378 te «a physical hazard, Examples of identification by basic colour and code indications are illustrated in appendices A and 8. Application of safety colours and code ndication colours 3 ‘code indications for medical 92s services are given in appendix C and these comply with the requirements of BS 1319 which is in course of revision. Pipelines carrying industrial gases from cylinders should have a basic identification colour in accordance with table 1. Optional colour code indications for general building services are aiven in appendix D. The identification of pipelines in land transport should comply with this standard, An identification scheme for pipelines in aircraft and spacecraft is given in British Standard M 23, ‘The names of colours have been retained in this standard but these are given for guidance and when ordering only the reference number should be specified. ‘This standard is supplementary to any cegulations laid down for public safery. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Amendments This document incorporates the followingamendments Ref Amendment Date Amd 6012 oct 'B4 BS 1710 : 1984 British Standard Specification for Identification of pipelines and services 1. Scope This British Standard specifies the colours for the identification of pipes conveying fluids in above ground installations and on board ships on a generic basis, It also includes duets for ventilation and conduits used for carrying electrical services The following three methods of identification are included {a} basic identification colours only; {(b) basic identification colours and cade indications; {} basic identification colours used in conjunction with the user's particular colour coding scheme. Thete methods are augmented by the requirements of 5.2. NOTE, The tts of the publications refered to in this standard se listed on the inal back cover 2, Definitions For the purposes of this British Standard the following definitions apply. 2.1 pipe and pipelines. Pipes, electrical conduits and. ducts, and their coverings 2.2 fluids, Substances consisting of particles that move ‘eely among themselves and are capable of being conveyed through pipes. 2.3 labels, Labelling including labels, plates, clips or signs 3. General 1.1. All methods of identification shall be compatible vith the pipe and operating conditions. 1.2 Where banding (see 6.1) is adopted, the decorative » protective colour of the pipe shall not be any of the »asic identification colours. 1.3 The basic identification shall be included at junctions, { both sides of each valve, service eppliance, bulkhead Yerance should be mace to 05 5378 Pet 1 ‘and wail penetration and at any other place where identification is necessary. ‘3.4 If the pipeline has been coded with safety colours for fire fighting, the valves shall be painted red (see §.1(a) and table 2), e9. valves in fire extinguishing steem or water Pipelines, or in water flooding pipelines shal be painted red. NOTE. In othar cass valves may be painted with the appropriate ‘lentiieaion colours. 4, Basic identification colours The appropriate basic colour shall be in accordance with table 1 5. Code indications 5.1 Safety colours (see table 2). Safety colours shall be as follows: {a} red, for fire fighting: {b) yellow for warning"; (6) auxiliary blue in conjunction with the green basic colour, to denote pipes carrying fresh water, either potable or nonpotable, 6.2 Information. Information shall be given regarding the ‘ature of the contents of the pipe by using the following systems either individually or in combination: {a} name in full; (0) abbreviation of name; {c) chemical symbol; (a) refrigerant number as specified in BS 4680; (e) appropriate code indication colour bands (se. notes 1 and 2) NOTE 1. Method of application 6.1 Basic identification colour only. Where the deter: mination of merely the basic nature of the fluid is required, the basic identification colour shall be applied by ane of the following methods: (2) painted on the pipe over the whole length; {(b) painted on the pipe as a band over a length of about 160 mm, depending on the diemeter of the bipe at points specitied in 3 (c} applied by wrapping around the pipe at points specified in 3.3 an adhesive band or identification clip of the basic identification colour aver a length of about 150 mm, depending upon the diameter of the pipe. 6.2 Basic identification colour with code indications 6.2.1. Code indications as specified in 5.1 shall be placed at junctions, at both sides of each valve, service appliance, bulkhead and wall penetration and at any other place where identification is necessary. Code indication in sceordance with 5.1 shall be used in conjunction with the basic identification colour reference as shown in table 1 ‘The basic identification colour shall be painted either aver ‘the whole length of the pipe or by colour banding at Roints specified in 3.3, Where the basic identification colour is applied aver the whole length of pipe, the code Indications in 5.1 shall be applied at intervals along the pipe with at least the minimum number of points as specified in 3.3. Where the basic identification colour is in the form of banding (see 3.2) the code indication shall be an or next ta the colour banding. Code indication as specified in 8.2 plus, if required, ‘other information regarding the fluid, shall be placed Con the basic identification colour. It the pipes are colour banded, the code indication shall be on oF next to the colour band, The names, abbreviations or chemical symbols shall be either white or Black in order to contrast clearly with the colour of the pipe or with the basic idemtification colour and shall be placed directly on the pipe or on a label fixed to the pipe near the basic identification colour. When labels are to be used on an installation in combina: tion with a sefety colour, the background eolaur af the labels shall be that of the safety colour. NOTE, Examples ofthe uss of basic identification colours with code indication ae given in appendices & and 8 Safety colour or code incication colour Basic identification Basic ident fication BS 1710 : 1984 NOTE. If, for example, itis required to visually identify pipes, ‘conveying various types of gas then the user shal allocate ‘a colour for each type of gas in the plant (the colour chosen shall not be a colour listed in table 1) and then proceed as follows. ‘Three colour bands shall be placed at junctions, at both sides of each valve, service appliance, bulkhead and wall penetration and at any ather place where identification Is necessary. The outside colour bands shall be the basic identification colour for the particular family of fluids In this example for gas, the outside colour bands would bbe 08 C 35 and the centre band shall be the colour allocated by the user or installer for the perticular type of gas flowing, The centre band may be of one colour (or a combination of colours within the width of approximately 100mm, Further examples are given in appendices C and D. NOTE. The dimensions of the colour bands sr illustrate in figure 1 ‘The application of colour bands shal be by one of the following methods: {2) painting; (b) adhesive colour bands; {c) equivalent colour clips. 7. Direction of flow When itis required to shaw the directian of flaw of the fluid, this shall be indicated by an arrow situated in the proximity of the basic identification colour and painted white or black in order to contrast clearly with the basic identification colour. If a label with a code indication is attached to the pipe, the direction of flow shall be shown by the pointed end of this label. For central heating systems and other closed circuits where itis necessary to indicate separately the flow and return pipes, this shall be done by the use of the word FLOW or the letter F an the one pipe, and the ward RETURN or the lettor R on the other (see appendix 8). 150 Approx 100 Approx 150 Approx Dimensions are in milimeres.
