ABSTRACT

Antioxidant activity test and blood glucose reduction test in rats with
alloxan induction from gedi leaves (Abelmoschus manihot L.) have been done.
extraction of 500 gram dry powder of gedi leaves with maceration method using
ethanol solvent produces 42,96 gram of dark green ethanol extract. The
phytochemical test showed that gedi leaves ethanol extract was positive containing
flavonoid, alkaloid, steroid and saponin compound. The result of antioxidant
activity test on gedi leaves ethanol extract had 31,29 ppm of IC50.
Blood glucose reduction test in rats with alloxan induction used 25 rats
which divided into 5 group, two control groups and three treatment groups with
different doses of gedi leaves ethanol extract respectively 5 mg/kgBW (P1); 10
mg/kgBW (P2); and 15 mg/kgBW (P3). All the groups have alloxan induction at
dose 125 mg/kgBW to obtain hyperglycemia condition.
The test result showed that, intake of gedi leaves ethanol extract cause
decreased 138,8 mg/dL of blood glucose in positive control group (Glibenclamide).
For treatment group, on the other hand the decrease obtained were 72 mg/dL in P1;
97,4 mg/dL in P2; and 137,6 mg/dL. The different of blood glucose reduction had
statistic test with one way ANOVA method and obtained significantly number
0.000 which mean all of data from the groups can be said different significantly
(p0,05). It can be concluded that gedi leaves ethanol extract giving with different
doses can provide different result with significantly to influence blood glucose
reduction from rats. The best blood glucose reduction from treatment group occurs
in gedi leaves ethanol extract doses 15 mg/kgBW (P3)
