CATALOG FOR ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

Special Advising Note:

Transfer students are strongly advised to complete as many preparatory courses
as soon as possible for their major before enrolling at UC San Diego. Preparing
well for the major helps students move efficiently toward graduation.

We offer a comprehensive and unique program in sociology. Our course offerings

include sociology of the family, education, business and work, science, law,
medicine and society, protest movements, race and ethnic relations, politics,
and more. In addition, our faculty has an unusual breadth of expertise in
international affairs and in many foreign societies. In our vision, sociology
should serve as a key field for addressing problems arising from social
inequality in the United States and around the world, the spread of information
technology, economic and cultural globalization, the strengthening of
nationalist and ethnic identities, the consolidation of new democracies, and the
formulation of social policies. We aim to prepare students for graduate study
in law, education, sociology, and in other professional and liberal arts
programs. We also offer many courses of immediate use in employment, such as
statistical analysis, classroom interaction, and social policy. Our department
coordinates offerings with related programs on campus, including the Teacher
Education Program, Law and Society, Urban Studies, and Ethnic Studies.

A total of four lower division courses (SOCI 1, 2, 60 and one lower division
elective) are required for the General Sociology major and the seven
concentrations. If your community college does not offer a comparable course for
the lower division elective requirement we will accept ANY UC transferable
Sociology course from the community college. More information regarding the
Sociology department, requirements, and major concentrations is available in the
UCSD Sociology Department Web page at http://www.sociology.ucsd.edu.
