We had a dream.

A dream that we both

shared with an unbridled passion. A
dream that is still, thirty years later, in
the making. A dream that will remain
with us until we can dream no more.

I first became aware of the existence of

Faridah Merican in 1979 when I was in
Malaysia shooting a documentary for
the Australian Armed Forces. Little did I
know, at that time, that this remarkable
woman who took my breath away via the
RTM National TV News was to eventually
become my life partner and constant muse.

Five years later I returned to Malaysia

to start up a film production company.
Faridahs and my paths crossed again;
I suppose we were destined to be
together, because in 1989 we married
and started up The Actors Studio.
The rest, as they say, is history.

Not in our wildest dreams did we ever

imagine that we could possibly achieve
so many wonderful things. It should be
noted, however, that none of our successes
would have been possible without the
support of so many caring and well-
meaning individuals and organisations.

Mak Yong Titis Sakti is a Mak Yong performance
based on Shakespeares romantic comedy A
Midsummer Nights Dream. Adapted by two exponents
of this traditional Malay art form Norzizi Zulkifli
and Nan Megat, and directed by Norzizi herself,
it tells the tale of a love triangle gone wrong.
Mak Yong Titis Sakti was selected to be a part of the Asian
Shakespeare Intercultural Archive and is studied as a
part of the National University of Singapores syllabus.

The New Play Project is a project initiated by The Actors Romeo & Juliet (Penang Tour) & Omar Ali Shakespeare 400 season to full houses and rave reviews.

Studio which aims to bring to the fore a new wave of
local story-tellers and playwrights to tell our stories.
Five contemporary playwrights have been selected to be a
part of the programme. Besides masterclasses with notable
theatre-makers and playwrights of our region, they have
worked tirelessly to get their scripts ready to be performed
and published in an anthology by The Actors Studio.
One of these new plays will be staged in full under the
direction of The Actors Studios Director in-Residence
Tung Jit Yang while the other four plays will be
featured as professionally-directed
staged readings.

break up. After a chance encounter in a supermarket
they get back together, or maybe they run into each
other and Marianne reveals that shes now engaged
to someone else and thats that. Or perhaps Roland
is engaged. Maybe they get married, or maybe
their time together will be tragically short.

The Actors Studios production of Neil Simons hilarious
comedy The Odd Couple Female Version in 2005 was
an absolute hit. It starred the late Samantha Schubert,
Bernie Chan, Elaine Daly, Sarah Shahrum, Chermaine
Poo, Chacko Vadaketh and Sham Sunder Binwani.
The Odd Couple Female Version revolves around
Florence who unexpectedly breaks up with her husband.
Despondent, she is determined to kill herself but is
saved by her friend Olive. With nowhere else to go,
Florence is urged by Olive to move in with her, at
least for a while. The only problem is that Florence
is anally retentive, neat, tidy and neurotic, whereas
Olive is slovenly, casual and an absolute slob.
In adapting this script from the play that made his
career, Neil Simon investigates the conditions of
friendship minus testosterone. The end result is this
rare, side-splitting version of two completely opposite
characters trying to share the same apartment.

Well, Ahmed, I must say its been a pleasure to
meet you and have this little talk. I mean, to reach
a common understanding. Thats what the world
needs, I reckon, a bit of common understanding.
Norm & Ahmed was The Actors Studios maiden
production starring Mustafa Noor alongside Joe Hasham.
It also marked Joes directorial debut in Malaysia. In
Faridahs notes, she wrote Hopefully, after Norm and
Ahmed The Actors Studio will carry on. Thus began The
Actors Studios journey in Malaysian performing arts.
This 1968 play by Alexander Buzo quickly became
the talk of the town with its simple premise, hard-
hitting subject matter and shocking ending. The
two-hander revolves around a middle-aged war
veteran Norm and a Pakistani student Ahmed.
It is late and Ahmed is walking home alone. The streets
are deserted and, being new in foreign country, he is ever
so alert. Suddenly, a stranger appears out of nowhere
asking Got a light?. And thus begins a keen and tense
exchange between the two that explores the issues of
identity, cultural differences and acceptance, issues that
are still so relevant and pertinent in Malaysia today.

Considered one of William Shakespeares greatest
comedies, The Most Excellent Historie of the Merchant
of Venice was written between 1596 and 1599. Even
though it was classified as a comedy in the First Folio,
The Merchant of Venice (as it is more commonly
known) touches on sociopolitical themes. It is these
such concepts that the father-and-son duo behind
Dato Seri (2016, 2018) and Kandang (2017) aim to
explore and adapt to a more regional setting.
The original play set in the 16th Century tells the
story of a merchant in Venice who has to default
on a large loan from a Jewish moneylender to
help a friend pursue his romantic interest.

Stories for Amah was first staged in 2002, to critical and
commercial acclaim. It was restaged a year later, again to
full houses.
Written by Mark Beau de Silva, the play centres on Ruth
de Souza, a young serani woman who is conflicted by
the Chinese upbringing on her mothers side and the
Eurasian identity imposed on her by her father. Having
just relocated to Kuala Lumpur, Ruth finds herself in this
new place, fresh from the death of her grandmother,
memories of her chilhood growing up in Kulim, then
the barracks of PDRM with her strict policeman father
come flooding back - carving a different side of her
that was never shared with het Chinese grandmother.
This landmark Malaysian play that examines what it
is like and what it means to grow up as a lain lain will
be revisted by its original director Joe Hasham.

The Actors Studio first presented A Man For All Seasons
in 1991 with Leslie Dawson as Sir Thomas More and Mano
Maniam as the King. Performed at the Old Town Hall, it also
featured Patrick Teoh as Cardinal Wolsley in his acting
debut, Eric Roslee as the Common Man, Kee Thuan Chye
as Cromwell, Gail Lyons as Alice More, Tiara Jaquelina as
Meg, the daughter and Ramli Hassan as Signor Chapuys.
When The Actors Studio celebrated its 15th anniversary,
it re-staged the play at The Actors Studio @ BSC
starring Ari Ratos as Sir Thomas More, Zahim Albakri as
Cromwell, Susan Lankester as Alice More, Kurt Crocker
as Norfolk, Kubhaer Jethwani as the Common Man,
Fahmi Fadzil as Richard Rich, Ben Tan as Wolsey, Reza
Zainal Abidin as Signor Chapuys, Jit Murad as The King,
Sharifah Aleya Al-Yahya as Margaret More, Kennedy
John Michael as Cranmer Keith Chin as Chapuyss
attendant and Bregitta Wong as The Woman.
This Robert Bolt classic enjoyed a successful run on
Broadway and was made into a film and television
movie. The film won six Oscars, a Golden Globe
for Best Motion Picture Drama as well as Best
Film and Best British Film at the BAFTA Awards.
The play is based on the true story of a man named Sir
Thomas More who refused to endorse King Henry VIIIs
wish to divorce his wife Catherine of Aragon so that he
could re-marry. In the end, More paid dearly and sacrificed
high office, his position in society and, ultimately, his life.
