2 UNPACKING AND INSTALLATION

2.1 Pre-installation
2.1.1 Packing list
PrimacsMCS TOC Analyser.

Tool kit, catalog no. 2MC10450, (also included with PrimacsMCS TOC
Analyser)
2.2 Unpacking
While unpacking do not discard any packing materials, till all parts have
been unpacked and checked against the packing list to insure all items are
accounted for. If any item is missing first check the packing. If it still can not
be found, make a note of it giving as clear a description as possible using
part numbers from the manual and immediately inform the forwarder and
the supplier (see delivery conditions). Even when you think that all items
have been accounted for, check the packing.
Should there be any damaged or broken parts, repack it in the original
packing, and immediately inform the forwarder and the supplier who will
give further instructions. If the goods are supplied on trial, the original
packing material must be used for return shipment unless better is
available.
2.3 Location
The choice of the site must take into account the availability of water, gas,
electrical supply and waste facility.
The instrument should only be placed in a laboratory that offers clean, dry
and dust free conditions and an acid-resistant and fire-proof support plate is
recommended.
The ambient temperature must be maintained between 5C and 40C and
the relative humidity must be maintained between 20% and 80%.
Place the instrument at the left side of the LAS-160 sampler (if present) and
Formacs Analyzer.
PrimacsMCS TOC Analyser Chapter 2 Unpacking and installation 2-2

Do not locate the instrument:

In direct sunlight.
In an area with excessive vibration.
Near an air conditioning unit.
Near any heat or cooling source.
Near equipment that generates intensive magnetic or electric fields.
Near equipment that generates high frequency.
Near any corrosive material or vapors.
2.4 Requirements
To operate the TOC analyser some requirements have to be supplied
separately by the customer.
Laboratory requirements:
Oxygen gas (or Zero grade air only for low ranges, < 2 mg C abs,), free
of CO2 and organic contaminants
Gas reducing valve for 300 kPa
Waste facility
Required Chemicals:
Calcium carbonate, CaCO3, p.a. (Merck, cat.no. 102066) (inorg. solids)
Phosphoric acid, H3PO4 (85%, an. grade) (Merck, cat.no. 100573,
corrosive)
Oxalic acid, (COOH)2 .2H2O (Merck, cat. no. 100594) (org.solids)
Distilled Water (CO2 free)
Note: Skalar does not accept any responsibility for the quality of the
chemicals used.
Instrument requirements for PrimacsMCS:
Note: For the instrument requirements for the connected Formacs analyser
see its manual. The PC needs two COM ports if the balance is
connected (for on-line insertion of the weight of the samples).
A. Oxygen supply; make sure the oxygen supply has a pressure of 2-3
bar on the bottle; consumption 150 ml/min. Oxygen has to be 99%
pure.
Gas conditions: High purity zero grade air is recommended for
concentrations < 2 mg C abs. it must not contain more then 2 ppm CO2
interference.
Connection tubing (hard PVC or PA) for gas input (size OD 6 mm, ID 4
mm). This tubing is supplied with the analyzer.
B. Power supply; before connecting, check the power supply is correct for
the instruments (220 Volt/50 Hz or 110 Volt/60 Hz or 240 Volt/50 Hz),
see type plate at the back of the instruments. The instruments must
only be connected to a line supply with ground protector (earth). If an
extension lead is used make sure the ground protector line is not
interrupted. Max. power consumption: 600 VA.
C. At least 2 power connections. Required for:
PrimacsMCS analyser
Balance with 0.1 mg precision
2.5 Hardware Installation
Install the instrument on the table at the left side of the Formacs analyser. It
must be accessible from either the front side as the right side. The right
side has to be accessible for inserting the IC sample.

2.5.1 Electrical connections

At the back of the analyser is a net entry.
Required components:
Cat.no. 90015001 Cable power cord 230 Volt
or
Cat.no. 90015009 Cable power cord 115 Volt
(Cat.no. 90015028 Cable balance to Computer (RS232))
Connect the power cable of the PrimacsMCS and the Formacs (after
connection of the RS232 cable from the Formacs to the PC).
(Connect the RS232 cable from the balance to the computer and the power
cable of the balance to the mains).
2.5.2 Gas inlet, gas outlet and Waste connections
A. Gas inlet, gas outlet and acid inlet connection
Required components for gas connection:
Pneum. PA tubing (ODxID, 6 x 4 mm, black) (cat. no. 90041092)
PTFE tubing 1.6 x 3.2 mm (cat. no. 90041454)
Acidflex sleeves (cat. no. 5415)
1. Connect one end of the pneumatic tubing to the oxygen gas supply
regulator on the gas bottle and the other end to the gas inlet connector
A (see Figure 2.1) on the PrimacsMCS.

2. Check that the gas supply has a pressure of 2 bar (200 kPa) on the
bottle. Adjust if necessary.
3. Check for leaks in the connections. Use a detergent to check.
Reconnect if any leakage appears.
4. Connect the gas outlet B (see Figure 2.1) to the inlet connector on the
Formacs analyser with the PTFE tubing with the aid of 5415 sleeves
(see Figure 2.2).
5. Connect the PTFE tube 3.2 x 1.6 mm (cat. no. 90041454) between the
IC reactor inlet (see upper arrow in Figure 2.3) and the acid dispenser.
Use a sleeve for the connection (neoprene sleeve from the toolkit of
FormacsHT ).

B. Waste
Waste vessels are connected to the condensate
traps of the TC reactor and IC reactor.
Regularly empty these waste vessels.
Warning: The waste liquid of the IC reactor
could contain strong acid.
2.6 Software installation
The program can be run in English, French and
German. To run the program in the required
language the Regional Settings have to be set
according the used language (in Settings,
Control Panel, Regional Options). For Windows
2000 and Windows XP the settings for the
French language have to be set only on French
(France) and for the German language only on
German (Germany); for Windows NT the
settings for the French language have to be set
only on French (Standard) and for the German
language only on German (Standard). Any
other regional setting will start up the program in Figure 2.3 Acid
English (see also chapter 3.3.1.3). dispenser
