Part-A (5x2) (10 Marks)
1. What is meant by filmwise condensation?.
2. What is meant by parallel flow heat exchanger?
3. What is meant by compact heat exchanger?
4. What is meant by fouling factor?.
5. Sketch the temperature variations in parallel flow and counter flow heat exchangers.
Part-B (2x16+1x8) (40 Marks)
6. a. A nickel wire carrying electric current of 1.5mm diameter and 50 cm long, is submerged in
a water bath which is open to atmospheric pressure. Calculate the voltage at the burn out
point, if at this point the wire carries a current of 200A. (16 Marks)
(Or)
b. A tube of 2m length and 25 mm outer diameter is to be condense saturated steam at 100C
while the tube surface is maintained a 92C.Estimate the average heat transfer co-efficient
and the rate of condensation of steam if he tube is kept horizontal. The steam condenses on
the outside of the tube. (16 Marks)

7. a. In a double pipe counter flow heat exchanger,10,000 kg/hr of an oil having a specific heat of
2095 J/kgK is cooled from 80C to 50C by 8000 kg/hr of water entering at 25C.Determine
the heat exchanger area for an overall heat transfer co-efficient of 300 W/m2K.Take Cp for
water as 4180 J/kgK. (16 Marks)

b. A parallel flow heat exchanger has ho and cold water stream running through it,the flow
rates are 10 and 25 kg/min respectively.Inlet temperatures are 75C and 25C on hot and
cold sides.The exit temperature on the hot side should not exceed 50C.Assume hi=ho=600
W/m2K.Calculate the area of heat exchanger using e-NTU approach. (16 Marks)

8. a. With a neat and labeled sketch explain the various regimes in boiling heat transfer(8 Marks)

b. Describe the principle of parallel flow and counter flow heat exchangers showing the axial
temperature distribution. (8 Marks)
