Before setting the paper alight the egg was too large to fit through the opening. After the newspaper was set alight, the egg moved through the hole into the bottle. But why did it happen? When the temperature of the air inside the bottle changes the pressure of the air inside the bottle also changes. As combustion heats the air in the bottle, the air pressure in there increases too. The heated air pushes on the egg and sometimes it can cause it to jump. around ailitie. Then, as the air inside cools down, the egg settles back onto the opening of the bottle and seals the opening. The air now trapped inside the bottle by the egg is less than before the newspaper was set alight.
