The 2017-18 school year is sure
to bring plenty of discussion about
the near future of the Verona Area
School District.
Three of our top five things to
watch this year fall under that cat-
egory, and others, like potential
changes to district language offer-
ings, did not even crack the list.
But parents are likely to see the
effects of the top two on our list
more immediately.
One is a technology new to the dis-
trict that will allow parents to keep
tabs on buses in real time, something
the district has been working toward
since 2015 when it changed busing
providers.
Number two on the list is anoth-
er multi-year effort from the dis-
trict. While still a work in progress,

the 65-acre Legends End develop-
ment goes to a public hearing next
week.
The Northwest Neighborhood plan
does not by itself enable any devel-
opment. However, new subdivisions
must be consistent with the citys
comprehensive plan.

leaders had mostly agreed
the best spot for a new
community pool would be
in a shared location with
the new Verona Area High
School when it opens in
2020.
That no longer appears to
be the case.
As the planning for the
school has continued, its

munity pool there would be
logistically difficult. This
month, the Parks, Recre-
ation and Urban Forestry

cial by eliminating the site,
on the citys west side, from

A proposed develop-
ment would bring 16 two-
acre homes to the south-
east side of the Town of
Verona.
The Plan Commission
will hear a presentation
on and discuss the propos-
al at its Aug. 31 meeting,
which begins at 6p.m. at
Town Hall, 7669 County
Hwy. PD.
The development would
cover an approximate-
ly 35-acre piece of land
to the north of Sunset
Drive across from where
it meets Beach Road,
owned by Steve and Kar-
en Reinen. The Reinens
entered into an agreement
with Heinrichs Develop-
ment Group in July 2013
with the shared vision
of developing a high-
end residential neigh-
borhood, according to a
project narrative provided
to the commission.
As the real estate con-
ditions have improved,
along with the Town and
City of Verona reaching
a boundary agreement,
we feel the time is right
to seek the necessary
approvals, the narrative
states.
The property is in what
the boundary agreement
a p p r ove d l a s t J u n e
referred to as Area
C, defined as land that
the city had no plans to
expand into and agreed
to exercise no rights over
the land. Under previous
development rules, only
one home would have
been able to go on the
land.
Its the second similar
subdivision in the past
year. The Town Board
approved a 20-home
development at the end
of Shady Oak Lane on the
towns north side in 2016.
The Sunset Drive sub-
division is across the road
from several other simi-
lar-sized homes. Its also
near the 178-acre Brown
farm, which Heinrichs
began trying to develop
in a similar way a decade
ago, with no success.
The developers are pro-
posing the lots remain
on private well and sep-
tic service, according to
the narrative, and would
cause little to no impact
on the view from Sunset
Drive.
They also plan to work
with the Ice Age Trail
Alliance to extend the
current trail system in the
area.
We feel that our cur-
rent design and location is
meeting the towns goals
and objectives and fits
into the spirit and charac-
ter of rural living within
the Town of Verona, the
narrative states.

The new Verona Area High School

within the same building.
The school board approved $5.7
million to pay for a second indoor
pool at the aquatic center district res-
idents approved last April in the ref-
erendum. That approval only covered
one eight-lane pool and a diving well.
It also approved spending about $3
million on other projects, including
turf upgrades for the soccer and foot-
ball stadiums.
VASD also plans to continue oper-
ating the Natatorium at the current
high school.
Rick Murray, a district consultant
who has studied the market for swim-
ming over the past few months, told
the board Monday night there was
quite a bit of demand for pool time
in and around Verona.
There was still more demand than
having the existing Natatorium and
one new eight-lane pool could sup-
ply, Murray said. Theres a long,
long list of people who would like to
use this.
He said that demand could lead to
revenue for the district, which super-

Thanks for a historic EMS photo

I just wanted to take a moment
to thank you for running the photo
of my late father (Jack Vaughan)
in your Veronas History section
recently. Dad felt strongly about
the need for EMS services. I imag-
ine there are still a few Verona res-
idents who recall how injured folks
used to just be put on a cot in the
back of a Dane County Sheriffs
station wagon and sped off to the
hospital. The photo surprised me
and made me smile and I made
sure to share it with my mom.

The City of Verona Plan Com-
mission will, at its Sept. 5 meeting,
consider actions that could result in
city annexation of a 65-acre tract of
Town of Verona farm land.
The tract is located about 2 to 3
miles from the existing city center,
near Hwy PD and Shady Oak Lane.
A developer has proposed a mas-
sive, high-density complex of 750
apartments up to eight stories high,
a 275-room hotel, and 240,000
square feet of other development
center two miles from downtown
Verona. Why would the city wish to
use its resources, including supply
utilities and services to do that?
Second, the massive development
is completely out of character with
the surrounding rural landscape and
agricultural land use. Yes, Epic is
nearby, but Epic is carefully pre-

Goodbye tours for Gordon School Literacy volunteer
More than 50 years ago,
the creation of the Verona
Area School District put an
end to the Gordon School
as a place of learning.
Soon, the building will
be demolished to make
way for a wider intersec-
tion at County Hwy. M and
Midtown Road.
With that in mind, the
Verona Area Historical
Society has arranged tours
and a historical presenta-
tion about the schools his-
tory Saturday, Sept. 8.
The afternoons activ-
ities start at 12:30p.m.
with a one-hour talk about
the school and display of
photographs at the Vero-

director Dave Walker put it.
The only area that would
potentially work was south
of the Military Ridge trail,
Walker told the Press in an
email.
There are no plans yet for
vehicle access to that part
of the site, which contains
a forest thats likely to be
used as an outdoor educa-
tion area.
Many in Verona have
longed for years for the city
to build a community pool
to replace or complement
the 50-plus-year-old Fire-
mans Park beach, a former
quarry. An effort to build a
new pool failed in an advi-
sory referendum about 20
years ago, but with financ-
es far more open this year
than theyve been in almost
a decade, supporters found
the time right to bring it up
again.
When Parks created a
$2.6 million plan to upgrade
Firemans Park and add a
splash pad to drive tourism,
the conversation ended up
turning to using the money
to begin funding a new pool
instead or in addition.
After a Jan. 30 commit-
tee of the whole, alders
instructed staff to commis-
sion a study, and they gen-
erally agreed over the next
few weeks that sharing a
parking lot and utility lines
with an indoor school com-
petition pool would make
the most sense. Planning
firm MSA began looking
in earnest at potential sites
after voters passed a $181
million referendum pack-
age in April that included
the school swimming facil-
ity.
Keeping Firemans Park
as a potential location has
eliminated the possibility of
the previously planned park
upgrade which would
include the elimination of
the fence and boat launch
and rebuilding the shelter
being done in time for the

were either not big enough,
not accessible enough or
unavailable soon enough.
Planning for 1,000
This summer, several
staff members took a tour
of area facilities to get a
sense of what would be
needed. The conclusion was
a pool roughly the same
size and capacity of Madi-
sons Goodman pool.
The 16,500-square-foot
Goodman pool cost $4.8
million in 2006 and can
accommodate close to
1,000 people. A pool that
big takes about 3-4 acres,
Walker said, and would
need a parking lot about the
same size.
Thats far too big for
the current Firemans Park
area the soccer fields are
around 2.5 acres but the
Matts family, which owns
adjacent land, has indicat-
ed it would be willing to
sell about five acres of the
land, as long as the pool is
not located directly on that
land, Walker told the Press.

field area would be the
location and the additional
land would provide some
expansion area for the rest
of the park, he explained.

was destroyed by a tor-
nado in September 1928.
Despite the wreckage, a
teacher reportedly saved
the lives of students who
were in school that day by
having them hide under a
piano.
The building was rebuilt

according to area histories,
the budget left no room for
school supplies. A fundrais-
ing quilt helped solve that
problem and it will be on
display at the senior center
during the discussion.
Even before that, the
school had been in use
for Shared District 11 for
decades. According to

The other site, Bad-
ger Prairie County Park,
is expansive and virtually

near the library, doesnt fit
in the countys master plan,
which includes keeping an
extensive prairie restoration
area.
Dane County staff has
said they are willing to con-
sider a site near the library,
but they werent terribly
thrilled with the idea,
Walker wrote.
That site would be more
accessible to more pedes-
trians than Firemans Park,
which is in an industrial
area, but it would require
rerouting the Ice Age Trail
and getting approval from
the County Board.

The other two sites after
the first round of cuts were
the school site and the
remaining Erbach proper-
ty next to the school. The
Erbach family sold part of
its land in a 2015 referen-
dum that led to the high
school plan.
But those were eliminated
last month because neither

kindness and compassion for everyone. This can be
difficult; many people are admittedly hard to love.
But by having an open heart that truly desires to love
everyone, your kindness and compassion will be
mirrored in others.The frown or scowl of the person
in front of you is more easily turned around by a
gentle smile than by scowling back at them. This is,
after all, the purpose of our lives,to love, and to

coming back.
Yet here she was, less than
a week after being elected,
visiting her member post
before their Monday lunch,
catching up with members
and being congratulated on
her election.
This weekend, she and her
husband Mike also a veter-

national locations including
Japan, Puerto Rico and South
Korea.
During her visits to posts

Rohan said she hopes to

organizations pillars: nation-
al security, veteran affairs
and rehabilitation, American-
ism and children and youth.

we take care of, but then we
have our American Legion
families, she said. As we
branch out, were taking
care of our veterans and their
families, our military per-
sonnel and their families and
then through our children
and youth and Americanism
program, were really taking
care of our nations families.
Regardless of the history
she made, Rohan said shes
was honored to be elected.

Coach Chris Handrick said the

Verona Area boys soccer team was
looking to find out its strengths
during the nonconference portion
of the schedule.
Handrick said he thinks the ear-
ly schedule should mimic what the
Big Eight Conference brings, but
the results were mixed in the first
few games. That changed in the
last three with two more shutouts
and 14 total goals.
He had been impressed with
the Wildcats (4-1) after a loss to
Oconomowoc in the season opener,
but he wanted more from them Fri-
day during a 1-0 win over Moline
(Ill.) at Reddan Soccer Park.
Against Oconomowoc, Handrick
said, the Wildcats felt the game
was closer than its 3-1 final score.
But days later, he said, the Wild-
cats were playing down to the level
of Moline, which only mustered
three shots and has been ranked in
the 100s in Illinois.
But if there is a time to learn,
it is during nonconference play,
which Handrick set up to be a test
before Big Eight play starts.
With games against Oconomo-
woc, Moline, Mount Horeb and
Menomonee Falls during the first
week, the different levels of play
will be a good way to prepare for
similar Big Eight opponents, Han-
drick said.
The variance of styles of play is
what we are going to need, Han-
drick said. The speed of play is
what we are going to go up against
in the Big Eight.
The Wildcats took the first step
toward accomplishing their early

21 aces and 13 1/2 blocks

I feel that our team is on
the rise. We are a young team
with a lot of girls who have
great potential, coach Dave
Nelson said. The greatest
barrier to our success will
be ourselves. If we are will-
ing to train hard and stick to
what works for us, we have

Verona girls cross coun-
try began the season with a
fifth-place finish Saturday
at the Glenn Herold Invita-
tional in Watertown.
The Watertown meet is
an early opportunity for
their own fitness and to
help determine their goals
for the remainder of the
season, coach Dave Nel-
son said.
Sophomore Jamie Hogan
was the top finisher for the
Wildcats, traversing the 5k
course 12th in 21 minutes,
34.7 seconds.
Senior Julia Pletta was
the only other girl on the
team to crack the top 25,
finishing 24th in 22.03
as the Wildcats finished
the meet fifth (out of 14
teams) with a score of 149.
I thought that Jamie
really had an excellent and
confidence building race,
her role as a team captain
and continues to lead by
example, Nelson said.
Junior Lacy Waschbusch
finished 32nd in 22.28 and
led a pack of six girls (five
seconds apart) to the finish
line, taking 40th place in

Bobb was the fourth girl
in that pack, taking 43rd

School girls golf team took
third Monday at the Cru-
sade Fore a Cure Invitation-
al at Maple Bluff Country
Club.
The tournament is a lit-
tle more than just any golf
event, however. Each team
is asked to raise money
for the Susan G. Komen
Foundation for breast can-
cer research, and the girls
all wore pink in support of
those with breast cancer.
The tournament ended up
taking about seven hours to
complete, with some holes
backing up due to slow
groups, but that didnt stop
Verona from finishing with
a 377.

Raymond Ozols
Raymond J. Ray Ozols,
age 46, was called to be with
God far too soon, with his
wife at his side, after com-
plications from a chronic
illness at St. Marys Hospital
on Aug. 23, 2017.
He was born on June 6,
1971, the son of Andreijs
and Vaira (Mednis) Ozols.
Ray was born in Rhine-
lander, Wis.. He grew up in
Eagle River where he attend-
ed Northland Pines School
system graduating in 1989.
He attended college, first at
Michigan Tech then trans-
ferring to UW-Eau Claire
graduating with a Bachelors
degree in Business Admin-
istration and Management
Information Systems. He
moved to Madison where he
worked for the Department
of Revenue as an IS Systems
Development Services Spe-
cialist for 22 years.
In 1999 he first met his
future wife, Erika Loos.
They lost contact for years
due to unfortunate cir-
cumstances regarding lost
e-mails (ironic for an IS spe-
cialist) but reconnected with
the help of mutual friends.
His humor and his huge
heart convinced Erika what
a wonderful man he was.
They married in 2009 in Egg
Harbor, Wis.
They enjoyed traveling
together to French Poly-
nesia, Germany, Florida
and Las Vegas. They were
blessed with two beauti-
ful boys, Jace in 2012 and
Kyle in 2013. Ray loved his
boys more than anything in
this world. He loved to take
them park hopping around
Verona and Fitchburg, go
to every parade possible,
make huge barricades of
pillows and blankets in the
living room that they could
jump and hide in, make up
fun bedtime stories, and try
to make them laugh when
they were sad. Ray and Eri-
ka built their dream home
together in Verona.
Ray loved his mother
unquestionably, once driv-
ing to Florida unannounced
surprising her as a birthday
present. When she fell ill,
he went there without hes-
itation. Growing up he was
close to his sister and later
enjoyed visiting her and his
nieces in Chicago. He was
very close to his grandpar-
ents (Julius and Aina Med-
nis) and cherished many
memories of fishing with
them as a boy. He also had a
special relationship with his
great aunt Olga. Family was
very important to him.
Ray developed a love for
bowling from an early age,
participating in Saturday
morning youth leagues and
state tournaments. Bowling
became a lifelong passion,
from college team competi-
tion to regional and national
tournaments, as well as top
level weekly leagues. He
was well known in the Mad-
ison bowling community,

11, 2017 at City Hall, 111 Lincoln Street, at
7:00 PM for the following matter:
1) Due to the Northern Lights Road
construction, the City of Verona is renam-
ing North Nine Mound Road from Cross
Country Road to County Highway PD.
North Nine Mound Road is a cul-de-sac
that ends short of Northern Lights Road.
This section of North Nine Mound Road
will be renamed to North Nine Mound
Court. Address numbers will stay the
same for these properties, but the road
