Engagingispossibleineverylogicalterminalstatus.Engagingatterminal0ismadepossibleby
integratingterminal30intotheEMFcontrolunit.Ifthedriveroperatestheparkingbrakebuttonat
terminal0,theEMFcontrolunitiswokenup.TheEMFcontrolunitinturnwakesuptheothercontrol
unitsonthevehicle.OnlythencantheEMFcontrolunitreceivetheimportantinformationrelating
tovehiclestandstill.Inaddition,thechangedstatusoftheparkingbrakecanbedisplayedafterthe
systemhasbeenwokenup.

Rollingmonitorwithparkingbrakeengaged

Therollingmonitorfunctionisintendedtopreventthevehiclefromrollingwiththeparkingbrake
engaged.Rollingmonitorisengagedwheneverastatechangeoftheparkingbrakefrom"disengaged"
to"engaged"takesplaceandendsfollowingadefinedtimeafterthisstatechange.

AsignalfromtheDSCisusedastheinputvariableforroll-awaydetection.Assoonasthissignal
indicatesthatthevehiclehasstartedtorollaway,aretensioningoftheEMFactuatorsiscarriedout
immediately.Todoso,theEMFactuatorsaresuppliedwithfullcurrentfor100mstoincreasethe
tensionforce.Afterwards,thesystemwaitsfor400ms.Ifthevehiclerollsagain,theretensioning
processisrepeated(amaximumofthreetimes).Ifrollingofthevehicleisstilldetectedafterthethird
retensioning,thefunctionendswithanentryinthefaultmemory.

Temperaturemonitoring

Thetemperaturemonitoringensurescompensationfortheforcereductionthattakeseffectfrom
whenhotbrakediscscooloff.Thetemperaturemonitoringisactivatedifthetemperatureexceedsa
certainvalueduringthestatechangeoftheparkingbrakefrom"released"to"engaged".

ThetemperatureofthebrakediscsiscalculatedindividuallyforeachwheelbytheDSCcontrolunit
andtransmittedtotheEMFcontrolunit.Duringthestatechange,thehigherofthetwobrakedisc
temperaturesisusedforthetemperaturemonitoring.Thecorrespondingtemperaturerangesare
storedinacharacteristicmapalongwiththecorrespondingretensioningtimes.

Dependingonthetemperatureduringthestatechange,thecorrespondingretensioningtimesfrom
thecharacteristicmapareactivated.Whenthefirstretensioningtimeisreached,thefirstretensioning
takesplace.Afterthesecondretensioningtimeexpires,anotherretensioningtakesplace;yetanother
takesplaceafterthethirdtimeexpires.Inthecharacteristicmap,thevalue0canalsobestoredforone
ormorespecificretensioningtimes.Therespectiveretensioningoperationsarethenomitted.The
functionendswhenthelastretensioningoperationiscompleted.

Disengagingtheparkingbrake

Todisengagetheparkingbrake,theparkingbrakebuttonispushed.However,fortheparkingbrake
toactuallyreleased,terminal15mustalsobeONandatleastoneofthefollowingconditionsmustbe
met:

Thebrakepedalmustbedepressed
Theautomatictransmissionparkinglockmustbeengaged
Theclutchpedalactuated(vehicleswithmanualtransmissiononly).

Thispreventsthevehiclerollingif,forexample,anotheroccupantofthevehicle(otherthanthedriver)
pressesintheparkingbrakebutton.

Oncetheparkingbrakeisreleased,theredindicatorlampintheinstrumentpanelandtheredLEDin
theparkingbrakebuttongoout.

ActivatingtheEMFactuatorsetsthespindleinmotion.Thespindlerotationmovesthespindlenut
awayfromthebrakepistonbyasmalldefineddistance.

Dynamicemergencybraking

Thelawrequiresthatvehicleshavetwomeansofapplyingthebrakes(withthefirstbeingthebrake
pedal).IntheF10,thesecondistheparkingbrakebuttononthecenterconsole.Iftheparkingbrake
buttonispulledwhilethevehicleisinmotion,thedynamicemergencybrakingprocedureisapplied
bytheDSCsystem.Thisfunctionisintendedforemergencysituationsinwhichthedriverisunableto
applythebrakesbypressingthebrakepedal.Asasafetymeasure,otheroccupantsofthevehiclecan
alsousethistobringthevehicletoastopif,forexample,thedriversuddenlylosesconsciousness.

Dynamicemergencybrakinghydraulicallyappliesbrakepressureatallfourbrakes.TheDSCfunctions
arefullyactiveandthebrakelightsareactivated.Thatrepresentsamajoradvantageovermanual
parkingbrakes.

Thedynamicemergencybrakingtakesplaceonlywhiletheparkingbrakebuttonispulled.The
decelerationsetbytheDSCisincreasedprogressively.Duringthedynamicemergencybraking,the
EMFindicatorlightisactivatedintheinstrumentpanel.Inaddition,aCheckControlmessageandan
audiblewarningsignalareissuedtomakethedriverawareofthecriticalsituation.

Ifthedriverusesthebrakepedalandpullstheparkingbrakebuttonatthesametimetoslowdown,the
DSCcontrolunitprioritizes.Thegreaterbrakingrequirementisputintoeffect.Ifdynamicemergency
brakingiscontinuedtothepointofstandstill,thevehiclecontinuestobeheldstationaryafterthe
parkingbrakebuttonisreleased.TheEMFindicatorlightontheinstrumentclusterremainsactive.The
drivercanthenreleasetheparkingbrakeonceagain(see"Releasingtheparkingbrake").

Parkingbrakefault

Intheeventofafaultoftheparkingbrake,theEMFindicatorlightisactivatedandlightsupinyellowin
theinstrumentpanel.ACheckControlmessageisoutput.

Theparkingbrakecanbedisengagedonthebraketeststandwithoutthebrakepedalorclutchpedal
