Course Orientation:
To stay enrolled in the course, you must take and pass a short orientation quiz with a 10/10 prior to
3:00pm on Friday, August 25. If you do not take and pass the quiz with a 10/10 by that date, then you will
be dropped from the course.
The quiz can be found on Blackboard, and you may take the quiz as many times as necessary in order to
receive 10/10.

Required Materials:
This is a hybrid course that uses the Hawkes Learning System. You can purchase the software in the bookstore
or online from Hawkes directly. There is more information about purchasing these materials under the Hawkes
section.

Course Description:

Course Layout:
As stated before, MATH 157 is a hybrid course that uses Hawkes Learning Systems. All homework and tests
are completed online. This is not, however, an online class. There are multiple human elements to the class as
well.
There are supplemental lectures that students are able to attend. This can give the student a more
traditional learning experience if desired. The lecture times are listed below in the Resources section.
There are also tutors available for students that want a little extra help from a person, rather than a
computer. Again, tutoring times are listed in the Resources section.
Students are responsible for pacing themselves through the course. While homework does not have
specific due dates, students should not be waiting until the last moment. Homework and testing will be
described in the following sections.
In order to pass and finish the class, students must take and pass 2 exams with a 70% or higher.
o Each exam has a deadline that it must be passed by, or else the student must drop the course or
receive a failing grade.
o However, you can always take the tests early! Once you have passed the two tests, you are
finished with the course.
Use this as an incentive to be working hard and finish early. This class can be one less
stress when finals time comes around if you finish early.

Resources:
This is a hybrid course. There are numerous resources for your benefit.
1. There are supplemental lectures for you to attend. If you prefer to learn in a classroom, you should take
advantage of our lectures and use the Hawkes software for homework and tests.
You should also attend the lectures if you find yourself struggling with the work.
If you feel like you are struggling with pacing yourself through this course, the lectures are a
great tool to use.
Lecture times for MATH 157 are listed below.
MW 2:30pm 3:20pm VH 1208
TR 8:00am 8:50am VH 1208
TR 3:00pm 3:50pm VH 1216
There is a schedule on Blackboard that details what is being taught in lecture each day. This can
also serve as a tool to help pace you through the course.
The schedule can be found by going to Blackboard, Tools, and then Calendar. The schedule is
incorporated into the Course Calendar.
2. There is a tutoring room (VH 1200) that is available for students. The tutoring room is free for Truman
students. If you have questions about any of the homework or need help reviewing for a test, the tutoring
room is a great resource! The tutoring room is also a convenient place to meet with other students to
work on your math.
Tutoring hours are:
i. Monday through Friday: 9am-6pm
ii. Sunday: 5pm-8pm
3. Students may make use of the Practice option in the Hawkes software. This will give you an unlimited
number of practice problems to work. This option will also provide helps such as view solution, step by
step tutoring, and explain error.

Homework:
Homework is completed on the students own time through the Hawkes software. Homework in Hawkes
consists of completing certifications for the sections assigned.
In order to take a test, the student must have completed the certifications for all sections covered by that
test.
o This means that you should not wait until the week of a test to start working on your
certifications.
o Ideally, certifications should be completed by the Friday before the week of the test deadline.

Examinations:
In MATH 157, there are two tests that students must pass in order to pass the class.
Passing a test means that you score a 70% or higher.

Page 3
Each test must be passed by the deadline below, or you must drop the course or else receive a failing
grade!
o Again, this means that you should not be waiting until the last minute to work on the class. The
deadlines are strict.
o If you have been working diligently on the sections prior to the week of the deadline, but are
unable to finish the work before the deadline, contact me about a possible extension.
o Rules Regarding Extensions:
1. Keep in mind, significant work must have been completed prior to the week of the
deadline in order to receive an extension.
2. Extensions will not be granted for any reason (including illness, family emergency, etc.)
if there has not been significant work completed prior to the week of the deadline.
3. Extensions must be asked for prior to the deadline. This means that you should not be
waiting until Friday of testing weeks to ask for an extension.
4. Extensions are for the current test only. You cannot take a test past the original deadline
for the next test.
5. If you have been working consistently throughout your extension, and are unable to pass
the test by your extended deadline, then you may request an additional extension.
If requesting an additional extension, the request must be submitted prior to your
extended deadline.
6. Receiving an extension does not automatically guarantee you an extension for the next
test.
Tests must be proctored in the testing lab in Violette Hall. This is room VH2000.
o Testing hours are:
1. Monday through Friday: 9:00am 9:00pm
When taking a test, you work alone, and the only resources that you are allowed to bring to the computer
are a pen or pencil, a calculator that has been checked out to you from the proctors, and if taking Trig
Test 2 or Precalculus Test 3, a formula sheet that has been checked out to you. You cannot bring outside
notes, formula sheets, phones, or calculators. You cannot access anything on the computer outside of the
Hawkes program.
o If you are caught with any unapproved resources or access anything other than Hawkes while
testing, you will fail the course and be submitted for academic dishonesty.
You will be provided with scrap paper, and if you want, you can check out a calculator from the proctor.
The calculator provided is a TI-30XIIS.
o To take a test:
Leave everything you brought (except a pen or pencil and your ID) at the front of the room.
When entering the classroom, you will be asked for your ID and assigned a seat.
You will also have to sign a sign in sheet once your ID is checked.
Once assigned a seat, log on to Hawkes.
The proctor will bring you scrap paper and a calculator if you want (you will need your ID to
sign out a calculator). The proctor will then enter the necessary password for the test.
During the test, you are to stay on the Hawkes website only. Accessing any other screen
(website, word document, or other) is a form of academic dishonesty. If caught on any other
screen, you will fail the course!
Page 4
When you are done with a test, be sure to show the score to a proctor. After you submit a test, a
certificate will appear on the computer with your name, test, and score on it. The proctor will need to see
this on the computer screen so do NOT exit out of the certificate. You will also need to show the proctor
your ID at this point. Test scores which are not recorded by a proctor will NOT count! Any grades that
are not BOTH recorded by a proctor and included in your online Hawkes gradebook will not be
counted.
Questions about Grading: If you believe that a question has been incorrectly graded, you can have a
proctor take a screenshot of the problem and e-mail it to me. I will not make any grade changes unless a
proctor has sent me a screenshot of the test problem in question. The proctors cannot say if a question is
correct or incorrect.
To have a proctor take a screenshot of the problem in question, raise your hand while you are
still in the review mode on the test. You can then pull up the problem, and ask the proctor to take
a screenshot to send to me.
Each of the tests must be passed by the deadlines below.
Test 1 Wednesday, September 20
Test 2 Wednesday, November 08
You can retake a test as many times as you wish. The limits to this are below.
o You must at least pass the test by the deadline (70%).
o After this, you can work to improve your score until you have taken the next test for the first
time.
i.e., Once you have taken Test 2 for the first time, you can no longer work on improving
your score for Test 1.

Evaluation:
Your grade for this course is determined entirely by your grade on each of the two tests. Each test is worth 100
points. There is absolutely no rounding of scores.
If the sum of your two test scores is 180 or above, and you have passed each test with a 70% or higher,
you will get an A.
If the sum of your two test scores is between 160 and 179, and you have passed each test with a 70% or
higher, you will get a B.
If the sum of your three tests is 159 or below, but you have scored at least 70% on each of the two tests,
you will get a C.
If your highest test score is below a 70% for any given test, you will fail the course.
