RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Confirming the presence of threads LV

PROBLEM
Conventional sensors have trouble detecting the presence of threads in a
hole. The sensors are often mounted very close to the target, making them
susceptible to oil or coolant.

SOLUTION
As a laser sensor, it can be installed further away from the tapped hole, while
maintaining reliable thread detection. Furthermore, because the LV-NH32 has
an adjustable beam spot diameter, it can be changed according to the size of
the hole and threads, producing extremely stable detection.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Confirmation of part presence/orientation in machining processes GV

PROBLEM
When using contact type sensors in machining applications, moving parts
often damage the device, resulting in unreliable detection.

SOLUTION
By using the distance-based GV, reliable, non-contact detection can be
performed. In addition, the GV can be located in a position where it will be
unaffected by debris and coolant regardless of mounting angle.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
A sensor that is unaffected by dust in heat treatment processes PX

PROBLEM
In dusty or steamy environments, conventional sensors often experience
buildup, requiring frequent maintenance. In addition, they must be mounted
closer to the workpiece, risking collision and damage.

SOLUTION
Using ultra-high power, the PX performs stable detection even in harsh
environments that would typically cause detection errors and temporary
breakdowns with a conventional sensor. In addition, the PX provides a
maintenance prediction alarm that further eliminates the potential for
temporary breakdowns.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Measuring the degree of flatness for a cylinder block GT2

PROBLEM
When assembling cylinder blocks and cylinder heads, if the block is not flat,
gaps will form between the block and the gasket, and as a result, the internal
pressure of the engine cannot be maintained. Deterioration of combustion
efficiency and the inflow of oil and other such substances is the cause of
damage, and because of these factors, there is a demand for extremely high-
accuracy. A skilled mechanic uses a dial indicator or inspection jig to perform
checks with sampling but checking all items is difficult.

SOLUTION
Multiple GT2 units can be implemented and using its flatness calculation
function, it is possible to inspect all items.
This eliminates human-based errors and improves product quality.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Measuring crank shaft runout GT2

PROBLEM
Many crank shafts are press-fit assemblies. If bending or warping occurs due
to weight, rotational runout will occur in the center axis. If the runout is large,
this will lead abnormal noise from the engine, inefficient fuel consumption, a
reduction in power, and in the worst case, breakage. There is a demand for
high-accuracy inspection, but it is difficult to inspect all items from a position
that considers accuracy and environment.

SOLUTION
Implementing the GT2 eliminates human-based variation and allows for
high-accuracy measurement of runout. With the capabilities of IP67, it also
supports inspection of all items in hostile environments.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Outer diameter measurement of a valve IG

PROBLEM
Valve dimensions differ depending on the engine type. Also, even with engines
of the same shape, the intake and exhaust sides often use valves with slightly
different dimensions. As a result, problems occur in which different varieties
are mixed together. This leads to engine trouble such as reduced combustion
efficiency, inefficient fuel consumption, and reduced power. Because the
diameter differences are very small, it is difficult to visually differentiate. Also,
with contact types, products will not make the cycle time.

SOLUTION
Judging outer diameter with the IG. Because it is non-contact, it also
contributes to improved cycle time, prevents the mixing of different varieties
and improves product quality.

3
POWERTRAIN SYSTEM
RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Outer diameter measurement of a brake hose IG

PROBLEM
Variation in the outer diameter of hoses will occur due to molding and die
conditions. Because the outer diameter varies, oil pressure is unstable and
product performance is unfulfilled.
Because they are safety-critical parts, thorough management is required.
However, it is difficult to inspect all items.

SOLUTION
In-line inspection with the IG.
It is possible to perform in-line inspection of all items.
Also, unlike sampling inspection, there is no human-based variation. Improves
product quality.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Inspecting the stroke of an engine valve LK-G

PROBLEM
In the past, sampling with a contact gauge was slow and areas which moved
could not be measured.

SOLUTION
With a high-speed sampling of 392k cycles per second, it is possible to
measure areas with rapid motion with a single unit.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Sealing bead measurement for transmission cases LJ-G

PROBLEM
In the past, spot type sensors only judged height and the correct height could
not be measured if the sealing material shifted.

SOLUTION
The height and area of application can be profiled and judged in real time,
contributing to improved yield.

4
POWERTRAIN SYSTEM
RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Tooth inspection of a timing belt LJ-G

PROBLEM
In the past, offline batch sampling was performed and product quality was
unstable.

SOLUTION
By using the LJ-G, tooth dimensions can be inspected in real time, allowing
for improvements in quality.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Presence/Absence and misalignment of the EGR valve O-ring CV

PROBLEM
Before press-fitting, items are visually inspected, but may be in a difficult
position to see.

SOLUTION
By implementing the CV Series vision system, a stabilized, automated
inspection can be achieved.
1. There is extremely large variation in die cast hues, causing errors to occur when using a normal
image sensor. With the Pattern search outline search, stable detection is possible even if there
is variation in the background color.

2. With the ultra compact camera (12 mm x 12 mm x 35 mm) and the side view attachment,
numerous mounting options are available, even in narrow spaces.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
OCR for injector part number CV

PROBLEM
The serial number quality varied depending on which maker the part was
purchased from. As a result, inspection using low cost image sensors was
impossible.

SOLUTION
Through the use of dictionary registration function of the OCR tool and
features to stabilize imaging, the degree of stability can be increased for a
more reliable inspection.

5
POWERTRAIN SYSTEM
RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Detecting the amount of grease applied CV

PROBLEM
Only presence/absence of grease could be performed using a color sensor.
A low amount of grease would still be considered OK.

SOLUTION
By implementing the CV Series with a color camera, it is possible to inspect
more than just the presence/absence of grease.
1. With HSB (hue, saturation, brightness) color extraction, stabilized detection is possible even if
lighting fluctuations occur.

2. The amount of grease can be measured in area, so the CV Series can fail parts with a low amount
of grease.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Processing instructions BL

PROBLEM
Processing instructions for every vehicle-line are executed from a production
instruction sheet. Due to condition setting errors resulting from misreads,
product defects would occur.

SOLUTION
By using barcodes, it has become possible to automatically judge processing
conditions.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Differentiating vehicle line for propeller shafts BL

PROBLEM
Production instruction sheets are read and assembly processing directions
are performed. These were visually judged by an operator, and as a result,
product defects would occur due to error.

SOLUTION
Barcodes are marked directly on the product, and these codes are read and
automatically recognized, thus eliminating operator error. Also, being able to
recognize the product itself has made it possible to be used as a means of
traceability.

2D code marking on cylinder blocks MD-F

PROBLEM
With pin stamping, the target is marked by creating indentations on the
surface of the part. But this does not create contrast and 2D codes cannot
easily be read by 2D code readers.

SOLUTION
With a laser marker, it is possible to create a white base by scanning across
the cast surface once with a laser. Then, a dark 2D code can be burnt into the
surface of the target creating very good contrast and easily being read by 2D
code readers.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Marking on spark plugs MD-F

PROBLEM
Ink-jet printers create marks that fade and conventional markers must use
extra tooling and rotary devices to mark around curved surfaces. This causes
additional costs to be incurred in engineering and labor costs.

Spark plug SOLUTION

3-Axis lasers are capable of marking around curved surfaces with easy and
flexible programming. Laser marking is also permanent and does not wear off
creating contrast that will last throughout the lifetime of the part.

Easy settings and clear marking using

3D software

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Marking on a piston ring MD-F

PROBLEM
Piston rings come in many shapes and sizes. With conventional laser markers
different nest sizes were used or the laser had to be re-mounted at various
heights to perform marking. This required additional maintenance to perform
extra costs for each new target being marked.

SOLUTION
3-Axis lasers are capable of easily programming various heights changes
and part dimensions making a product changeover as easy as switching to
a new program in the system. Height changes can even be accounted for
automatically using laser displacement sensors.

7
BODY/CHASSIS
RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
A heavy-duty safety light curtain that is resistant to impact SL-V

PROBLEM
With welding processes that are mediated by workers, light curtains may
get hit and break. Therefore, conventional curtains often require additional
housing for protection.

SOLUTION
The internal components are not fixed to the outer frame and are protected
with a 3 mm thick frame, thus reducing the cost and effort of adding
additional housing.
Also, because the SL-V Series light curtain is IP67, it can even be used
directly with processes in which liquids are applied.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Confirmation of product removal for pressed workpieces FS

PROBLEM
With a single optical axis photoelectric sensor, detection becomes nearly
impossible when the workpiece is not repeatable.

SOLUTION
The FU-E40 has a 40 mm detection area, making it possible to perform
stabilized detection even if the position varies. Furthermore, when using the
edge detection mode, the influence of dust and dirt buildup is greatly reduced.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Measuring the temperature of car-body painting process FT

PROBLEM
Confirmation of baking after painting.
Currently, this can only be managed indirectly using the sense of the operator,
heating time, etc. Out of concern of causing scratches, contact is not permitted.

SOLUTION
Non-contact temperature checks with the FT.
Because it is digital, it is possible to verify a target has been reached. This
improves the quality of manufactured products by being able to judge
heating defects.

8
BODY/CHASSIS
RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Detecting double-feeding in large scale press processes (thickness judgment) IL

PROBLEM
Two blank workpieces are taken in while being transported and are stamped,
causing the metal die to break. With magnetic conveyance, proximity type
sensors may malfunction.
Conventional laser displacement sensors are expensive.

SOLUTION
Calculating thickness with the IL Series, prevents the breaking of dies and
achieves reductions in cost.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Feedback control of welding position LJ-G

PROBLEM
Conventional sensors and image processing were affected by color and tilt
and were unable to provide stable feedback data.

SOLUTION
Accurate feedback control that is unaffected by target color or tilt is possible
and has allowed for improvements in welding quality.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Confirming the accuracy of door assembly LK-G

PROBLEM
Conventional laser displacement sensors were unreliable due to the influence
of luster from metal surfaces, color, and tilt.

SOLUTION
With a long range of up to 1000 mm, there is no need to change equipment.
Furthermore, the wide spot optical system makes it possible to measure
metallic surface with high-accuracy.

9
BODY/CHASSIS
RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Confirmation of workpiece seating within hot-forged metal dies CV

PROBLEM
Because the press cycle is 3 to 5 seconds, the operator performs confirmation with
constant attention. On rare occasion, mistakes would be made in this process.

SOLUTION
The implementation of an image sensor, makes it possible to perform
stabilized, automatic inspection and saves on labor.
1. Because the workpiece is deep-red metal, it has an effect on infrared light and produces blurring
when using a monochrome camera. With the CV-5000 Series, color shade processing makes it
possible to create a defined image with clear contrast.
2. In the past, inspection relied on human sense, but by using a megapixel camera, it has become
possible to perform high-accuracy measurement and as a result, accurate misalignment position
inspection has been achieved.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Sensing guide holes during car-body assembly CV

PROBLEM
Because position detection for a variety of workpieces was problematic,
automation was not performed. Automation was achieved through
implementation.

SOLUTION
Can support a variety of workpieces and surface conditions through outline
search, the detection of virtual circle through multiple edge point detection,
and flexible search.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Managing overhead carrier maintenance BL

PROBLEM
Maintenance for overhead carriers that carry workpieces are managed in
processes like the painting process. Currently, maintenance is executed
periodically after being judged from production numbers.

SOLUTION
Frequency of use has been made clear by attaching barcodes on the
overhead carrier, and then reading those codes. Also, repairs are only
extended to hangers that exceed the prescribed frequency of use, reducing
costs, and also making it easy to adjust deadlines.

10
INTERIOR SYSTEM
RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Checking the assembly of foam materials FS

PROBLEM
Foam materials easily absorb light and as a result, can be very difficult to
detect with a conventional photoelectric sensor.

SOLUTION
The FU-40 is a fiber unit with a built-in lens that allows for stable detection of
foam materials due to its focused beam and high power.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Judging the height of springs for car seats IG

PROBLEM
Depending on the model, there are various types of springs that are used but
it is difficult to judge the total length of a spring.
Because there are gaps, normal thrubeam sensors are unstable and
conventional image processing is expensive.

SOLUTION
With its built in CCD, the IG Series ignores spring gaps and can reliably
catch only peak edges. As a result, it reliably judges total length and
achieves a reduction in costs. Improves yield by preventing the mixing of
different products

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Score depths in an instrument panel LJ-G

PROBLEM
In the past, workpieces were cut and measured with slide calipers in a
sampling inspection.

SOLUTION
Using the LJG, it is possible to instantly perform non contact measurement of
V-groove depth and width, resulting in improved quality with the inspection of
all items.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
OCR on seat belt buckle CV

PROBLEM
Visual inspection was performed by humans, but inspection was not 100% so
different parts would be mixed together.

SOLUTION
Automotive seat belts are safety products and careless mistakes must

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Dimensional inspection of seat springs CV

PROBLEM
In the past, seat springs were manually inspected. There are many different
inspections for springs, making manual inspections a time consuming and
costly process.

SOLUTION
The CV Series can instantly complete multiple inspections which significantly
reduces labor costs.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Tracing air bags BL

PROBLEM
Under law, air bags must be managed with serial numbers. Serial numbers,
which are created for each individual item. Reading was performed by using
a hand-held device when the operator is assembling the instrument panel.
Reading must be performed in a certain amount of time while holding the
workpiece.
As a result, products have been broken after being dropped by the operator.

SOLUTION
A fixed reader is installed, and the method is changed to one in which reading
is performed by holding the air bag towards the reader. This has resulted in
faster work completion time, and has eliminated the dropping of products.

12
INTERIOR SYSTEM
RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Assembly instructions for seat belt components BL

PROBLEM
With instruction for seatbelt assembly components, the instruction sheet
is viewed in order to judge which components are assembled with which
retractor. Because of this, components from the wrong vehicle line end up
being assembled, resulting in the occurrence of product defects.

SOLUTION
Barcodes and 2D codes are placed in the production instruction sheet and
are recognized using a fixed reader. As a result, components that are to be
assembled are automatically understood, eliminating assembly component
errors caused by the operator. It has also been made possible to download a
history of what has been assembled with which components.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Paint stripping for illuminated instrument panel switches MD-V

PROBLEM
Though many items were printed or formed through two-color molding, the
use of laser processing is increasing along with the steady expansion of car
types that use illuminated switches. Conventional laser markers had difficulty
supporting curved surfaces and there were problems with the quality of
worked surfaces.

SOLUTION
YVO4 laser markers, with their high peak power, achieve sharp processing that
limits the effects of heat. Also, capturing 3D-CAD data allows for processing
without distortion on three-dimensional shapes.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
2D code marking on seat rails MD-F

PROBLEM
In the past, in order to prevent assembly errors, the application of labels was
mainstream. However, the time and effort associated with application and the
cost of labels as well as the risk of label peeling became problematic.

SOLUTION
Laser markers can provide clear marking even in a limited amount of space.
Reading is also stable and as a result contributes to improved yield on
automatic assembly lines. Also, unlike label and ink methods, there is not
peeling or fading, making it possible to reduce the running cost as well.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Preventing product mix-up CZ

PROBLEM
When varying products are running on a single production line, product mix-
up becomes an issue.

SOLUTION
Using the CZ Series color sensor, up to 8 different colors can be registered to
the sensor, making it possible to avoid product mix-up. The luster-cancelling
sensor heads offer further assistance when dealing with targets that
experience luster.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Detecting tire runout IL

PROBLEM
If there is rotational runout, the product will become defective at the balancer,
after passing though the vulcanizing machine, which is the following process.
Coming this far increases disposal loss. Therefore, you wish to check for
runout before hand. Contact measurement is NG because it is rubber.
However, measuring with a normal laser is difficult. (Particularly glossy green
tires (raw tires)) Lasers measurement devices that can perform measurement
are expensive.

SOLUTION
With a built in SCAN function, the IL is unaffected by surface conditions
and therefore allows for runout judgment at low cost. By checking for runout
between processes, it is possible to make repairs and reduce disposal loss.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Inspecting the operating angle of mirrors GT2

PROBLEM
Mirrors that can automatically adjust their angle using a built-in motor have
become common, and it is necessary to measure the operating angle as an
item of characteristic inspection. Because it is a mirrored surface, it is difficult
to use lasers. If sampling with dial indicators, it is impossible to inpsect all
items within the required cycle time.

SOLUTION
Multiple GT2 units are implemented to calculate the operating angle from
data for each measurement point. Uses a fluorocarbon resin contact and
low-contact pressure sensor to prevent scratches Can inspect all items with
high-accuracy. Improves product quality.

14
OTHERS
RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Height measurement of sealing material for door glass LJ-G

PROBLEM
In the past, cameras were used to perform measurement but were unable to
perform stable measurement when changes in height would occur.

SOLUTION
The LJ-G has made it possible to perform stable measurement in all
measurement ranges, contributing to improvements in quality.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Measuring the side surface shape of tires LJ-G

PROBLEM
In the past, because spot type laser displacement gauges were used, only a
single could be viewed and it was not possible to see what was happening for
the entire side surface.

SOLUTION
Because the profile is obtained using a 2D laser displacement sensor, the
shape of the entire side surface can be easily measured just by rotating
the target. This has made it possible to conduct an evaluation for the
entire side surface.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Measuring the eccentricity of an EV motor LS-7000

PROBLEM
Using a dial gauge, inspection was performed visually by a human, resulting
in human error.

SOLUTION
Performs non-contact measurement of core eccentricity. Can perform non-
contact measurement with 2400 samplings per second, which has made it
possible to perform measurements without human error.

15
OTHERS
RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Motor wire binding and soldering defect inspection CV

PROBLEM
Image sensors that were equipped with monochrome cameras were used,
but it was difficult to judge the difference between wires and edges or solder
color, making it impossible to perform stabilized detection.

SOLUTION
Equipped with a color camera, the CV-5000 Series makes it possible to
perform stabilized detection.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Cutting cable sheathing ML-Z

PROBLEM
In the past, the mainstream method for cutting involved a contact method that
used a blade, but there were problems associated with this method, including
that adjustment was difficult and core wires would become scratched when
using this method. Also, the blade had to be replaced periodically, which
proved to be problematic in regard to the running cost.

SOLUTION
CO 2 laser markers have the unique feature of not being absorbed by
metal and as a result leave no scratches on the core wires. Also, they
have no consumable products, thus allowing for reductions in the running
cost. It is also possible to use reflections to perform batch processing
from a vertical direction.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
Marking on a use box cover MD-V

PROBLEM
In the past, the display on a fuse box cover was produced with silk printing.
The cost and lead time associated with faded printing and the addition of
models proved to be problematic.

SOLUTION
With a laser marker, it is possible produce white colored marking on black
resin that does not fade. Also, it can easily capture CAD data and can quickly
adapt to the addition of a variety of products. Also, KEYENCE products
support a large, 300 x 300 mm area as well as three-dimensional shapes,
contributing to the reduction of machine cycles.
