DESIGN OF CORBEL

(As per Chapter 10 of Allen's Book, by Limit State Method)

Project: Job No:

Done By: Date:

Component Designed: Longitudinal Stopper

V = 3680 kN
av = 450 mm

db
h = 1000 mm
d= 928
mm

INPUT:
Factored shear force acting on the section, V = 3680 kN
Overall depth of the section, h = 1000 mm
Effective depth of the section, d = 928 mm
Depth at the face of contact area, d b = 1000 mm
Width of the section, b = 8850 mm
Dist.of the load from face of the support, a v = 450 mm
Ratio of z & d from figure 10.3 of Allen's book, z/d = 0.95 (see chart below)
Grade of concrete, fcu = 30 N/mm2
Grade of steel, fy = 415 N/mm2
Modulus of elasticity of steel, E = 2.0E+05 N/mm2
Percentage of steel (100As/bd) = 0.400 (no input required)
Allowable shear stress, vc (limit state method) = 2.730 N/mm2
Spacing of horizontal stirrups, sv = 150 mm
OUTPUT:

1. DESIGN FOR FLEXURE:

Maximum allowable shear stress, 0.8*(fcu)1/2 = 4.382 N/mm2
Shear stress acting on the section, v = (V/bd) = 0.448 N/mm2
Which is less than the maximum value, hence O.K.

Now, ratio of av and d, av/d = 0.485

Which is less than1.0, therefore it is a corbel

Depth at the face of contact area, d b = 1000 mm

Which is more than 'h/2', therefore it is a corbel

Ratio of v and fcu, v/fcu = 0.015

From the chart, z/d = 0.950
z= 882 mm
x = (d-z) / 0.45 = 103 mm
Ft = V cot b = V*(av/z) = 1878 kN
From strain profile, es = (d-x)*0.0035 / x = 0.028000
Which is more than 0.002
Therefore, fs = 361 N/mm2
Area of steel required, Ast = 5203 mm2
Minimum area of steel, Ast,min = 5096 mm2
0.4 % of bd = 32851 mm2
Maximum of above steel, Ast = 32851 mm2

2. DESIGN FOR SHEAR:

Shear stress acting on the section, v = 0.448 N/mm2

Allowable shear stress, vc = 2.730 N/mm2
Area of shear stirrups, Asv = b*sv*(v-vc)/0.87fy = -8390 mm2
Minimum area of shear stirrup, Ast/2 = 16426 mm2
Maximum of above two, Asv = 16426 mm2
