Child of the Divide

by Sudha Bhuchar
19 & 20 October 2017
Summer 1947, India and Pakistan have
achieved Independence and millions are
displaced by the newly created borders
between the two nations. Amid the
upheaval young Palis fingers slip from his
fathers hand altering his destiny forever.
Adopted into a Muslim family, he acquires
a new name, a new faith and a new life.
But, when his real father comes to claim
him, Pali must decide who he is: the Hindu
boy he was born to be, the Muslim boy he
has become, or simply a child of the divide.

#NEWNORTHSOUTH

To mark this years 70th anniversary of the independence of India, Pakistan and later Bangladesh,
Manchester is showing an extensive programme of South Asian art and culture in a series of venues
across the city. This is part of the work of the New North and South network, involving 10 organisations
in the North of England and South Asia in a 3 year project together with the British Council. Over this
period, biennials in Colombo, Karachi, Kochi and Lahore, and the Dhaka Art Summit, are working with
Manchester Art Gallery, Manchester Museum, the Whitworth, Liverpool Biennial, and the Tetley in
Leeds, to show some of the most exciting South Asian culture in the North of England, Bangladesh,
India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
