ThepassivesafetysystemoftheF10buildsontheobjectivesandcharacteristicsoftheF01.The
passivesafetysystemfulfilsalllegislativerequirementsworldwide.
Extensivemeasuresweretakenonthebodyandontheoccupantssafetyandprotectionsystems.The
passivesafetysystemincludes,inadditiontotherestraintsystems,aspecialbodystructurewhich
offersaexcellentcrashperformance.Intheeventofanaccident,theforcesarereducedinadefined
mannerandthereforehavelessimpactontheoccupants.
Therestraintsystemsensurethattheriskofinjuryissignificantlyreduced.
The3rdgenerationoftheAdvancedCrashSafetyModuleACSMisusedontheF10asthecentral
airbagcontrolunitforthepassivesafetysystem.Itdiffersfromthepreviouscrashsafetymodulesin
thatithasanexternalsensorsystem.

4.1.Functionsofthecrashsafetymodule
ThemainfunctionoftheCrashSafetyModuleistoconstantlyevaluateallsensorsignalsinorderto
detectacrashsituation.Asaresultofthesensorsignalsandtheirevaluation,thecrashsafetymodule
identifiesthedirectionofthecrashandtheseverityoftheimpact.
Alsoincludedisinformationonseatoccupancyandwhetherornotthedriverand/orfrontpassenger
havetheirseatbeltsfastened.Fromthisinformation,measuresaretakentoselectivelytriggerthe
necessaryrestraintsystems.
Thecrashsafetymodulemonitorsthesystemitselfandindicatesthatthesystemisreadyfor
operationwhentheairbagindicatorlightgoesout.
Intheeventofafaultduringoperation,thisisstoredinafaultmemory,whichcanbereadoutfor
diagnosticpurposes.
Ifacrashsituationisdetected,thisiscommunicatedtotheotherusersinthebus-systemnetworkby
acrashmessage.Therelevantcontrolunitsrespondtothissignalbyexecutingtheirownfunctions
accordingtotheseverityofthecrash.
Thesefunctionsinclude:
Openingthecentral-lockingsystem
Activatingthehazardwarningflashers
Switchingontheinteriorlight
Deactivatingtheelectricfuelpump
Switchingofftheauxiliaryheating
Automaticemergencycall.

Thesensorsservetodetectandverifyfront-end,side-onandrear-endcrashes.Inaddition,thesystem
isalsoequippedwithrolloverdetection.
Thesensorsaredirectlyconnectedtothecrashsafetymodule,whereitssignalsareevaluatedand
processed.

Europeanversionvehiclesareequippedwiththefollowingsensors:
Onetransverseandlongitudinalaccelerationsensorinthecentralsensor(yellow)
OnetransverseandlongitudinalaccelerationsensorineachoftheB-pillars(green)
Oneairbagsensorforpressureineachofthefrontdoors(blue).
Onelongitudinalaccelerationsensoroneachoftheenginesupports(red)

Thelongitudinalaccelerationsensorscanmeasurebothpositiveandnegativeacceleration.Using
thesesignals,afront-endorrear-endcrashisdetected.
Aside-oncrashisdetectedusingthelateralaccelerationsensorsandairbagsensorsinthedoors.

Acrashinwhichtheforce-transferdirectionisnotperpendiculartothevehicle'slongitudinalor
transverseaxisisdetectedbymeansofacombinedtransverseandlongitudinalacceleration.
Thelongitudinalaccelerationsensorsontheenginesupportsservetodetectafront-endcrashandits
severity.
4.2.3.Triggeringtimeandtriggeringsequence
TheCrashSafetyModuleusesthevaluestransmittedbythesensorstodeterminethedirectionand
severityofthecrash.
Inthecaseofafront-endcrash,forexample,correspondinglyhighaccelerationvaluesmustbe
detectedbythelongitudinalaccelerationsensorintheB-pillarandbythelongitudinalacceleration
sensorinthecentralsensor.Basedontheaccelerationforces,analgorithmdetectstheseverityand
directionofthecrash.Usingthisinformation,thetriggeringtimesandthesequenceoftherestraint
systemstobeactivatediscalculated.
Apossibleimminentrolloverisalsodetectedandtheappropriateprotectionsystemsareactivated.
4.2.4.Triggeringtheoutputstagesofthefiringcircuits
TheCrashSafetyModuleispoweredbytheCarAccessSystem4(CAS4)throughterminal30B.
Atterminal30B,theCrashSafetyModuleisinofflinemode.Thismeansthatitisactiveonthedata
busandcanfulfillalldiagnosticfunctions.Thetriggeringoftheignitioncircuitsisblockedandonly
possiblefromterminal15,oncompletionofthesystemself-test.Likewise,theCrashSafetyModuleis
readyforignition,evenifinterminalRtheengineturnsOFF.
Theignitioncapacitorsarechargedviaaswitchingcontroller.Thesecapacitorsmakethefiringenergy
availableintheeventofacrash.Ifthevoltagesupplyisinterruptedduringacrash,thefiringcapacitors
servebrieflyasanenergyreserve.
Theoutputstagesofthefiringcircuitsconsistofahigh-sideandalow-sidepowercircuit-breaker.The
high-sidepowercircuit-breakercontrolsthefiringvoltage,whilethelow-sidepowercircuit-breaker
switchestoground.Theoutputstagesofthefiringcircuitsarecontrolledbyamicroprocessor.
Thehigh-sideandlow-sidepowercircuit-breakersalsoservethepurposeofcheckingthefiring
circuitsduringthesystemself-test.
4.2.5.Sendingthecrashmessage
Intheeventofacollisioninvolvingtriggeringoftherestraintsystems,theCrashSafetyModulesends
acrashmessagetotheusersinthebus-systemnetwork.Paralleltothis,theTCUisinformedviaa
directsingle-wireconnectiontotransmitanemergencycall.
Then,therespectivecontrolunitsperformthefollowingfunctionsdependingonthecrashseverity:

4.2.6.Crashentries
Intheeventofacollisionwhereoneormoreactuatorsaretriggered,acrashentryisstoredinanon-
erasablememory.Afterthreecrashentries,anon-erasablefaultmemoryentryisstoredwiththe
instructiontoreplacetheCrashSafetyModule.
Note:Thethreecrashentriescanalsobestoredduringthecourseofanaccident.Eachcrashentryis
assignedasystemtime.
Theelectroniccontrolunitremainscapableoffiringevenafterthreecrashentries.Thecrashentries
cannotbeerasedandareusedtodiagnosethedevice.Amaximumofthreecrashentriescanbe
stored.Thecontrolunitmustthenbereplaced.
4.2.7.Emergencycallfunction
Theemergencycallfunctionsarecountry-dependentandareavailabletocustomersincountries
withBMWAssistinfrastructure.Thismeansanappropriateserviceproviderwithacallcentermust
beavailable.Anotherpreconditionforbeingabletomakeanemergencycallistheavailabilityofa
telephonenetwork.
WithBMWASSIST,thecustomerhasamanualandanautomaticemergencycallaswellasother
functions.
Amanualandanautomaticemergencycallfunctionisprovidedasstandard.Furthermore,the
driverhastheoptionofactivatingabreakdowncall.Irrespectiveofwhetherthecustomerordersa
telephoneornot,eachvehicleisequippedwithatelematicscontrolunitTCU,atelephoneantenna,an
emergencyantenna,ahandsfreekitandaGPSantennafordeterminingposition.
Manualemergencycall
Themanualemergencycallisintendedforcustomerstorequesthelpquicklyiftheyarepresentwhen
anaccidentoccurswithoutbeinginvolvedthemselves.
Theemergency-callbuttonislocatedintherooffunctionCenter.Theemergencycallbuttonis
connecteddirectlytotheTCU.

Pressingtheemergency-callbuttonsestablishesavoiceconnectionwiththerelevantcountry
provider.ThevoiceconnectionisindicatedbyaflashingLEDintheswitch.
Automaticemergencycall
ThecrashsafetymodulesendsacrashtelegramtotheTCUintheeventofanaccidentof
correspondingcrashseverity.TheTCUplacesanemergencycall,whichatthesametimecontainsthe
locationofthevehicle.
Paralleltothis,attemptsaremadetosetupavoiceconnectionwiththevehicleoccupantstoobtain
moreinformationontheaccident(severityoftheaccident,numberofinjured)sothatfurtherrescue
operationscanbeinitiated.
Extendedautomaticemergencycall
VehicleswithBMWAssisthaveanadditionalfunction,theextendedautomaticemergencycall
(AdvancedAutomaticCrashNotification).
Usingvarioussensordataoftheextendedautomaticemergencycallsystem,theriskofinjuryis
determinedandtransmittedtotheemergencycoordinationcenter.
Theemergencycallincludesadditionalspecificinformationabouttheaccident.Thusthecallcenter
hasmoreaccurateinformationabouttheaccidentandtheriskofinjury,whichcanbepassedontothe
emergencycoordinationcenter.Theemergencycoordinationcentercantheninitiatetheappropriate
actions.

4.3.1.Systemself-test
TheCrashSafetyModuleperformsasystemself-testasofterminal15.Theairbagindicatorlightis
activatedforapproximatelyfivesecondsduringthesystemself-test.
Whenthesystemself-testisconcludedandnofaulthasbeenfound,theairbagindicatorlightgoesout
andthesystemisreadyforoperation.

4.3.2.Indicationofsystemoperability
CrashSafetyModulesystemoperabilityisindicatedbytheairbagindicatorlightgoingoutinthe
instrumentpanel.
4.3.3.Cyclicmonitoring
Oncethesystemself-testhasbeensuccessfullyconcludedandthesystemisreadyforoperation,a
cyclicmonitoringprocedureisperformedforfaultmonitoringpurposes.Cyclicmonitoringservesthe
purposeofinternaldiagnosisoftheelectroniccontrolunitandtheoverallairbagsystem.Thecyclic
monitoringiscarriedoutcontinuouslyasofterminal15anditisalsocontinuedafterreachinglogical
terminalRandaftertheengineisOFF.
4.3.4.Faultindicationandfaultcodestorage
TheCrashSafetyModulehasanon-volatilefaultmemory.Afaultentryissignalledbytheairbag
indicatorlightilluminating.
Adistinctionismadebetweeninternalandexternalfaultswhenenteringthefaultcode.Eventssuchas
triggeringofanairbagorseatbeltpretensionerarealsostoredinthefaultmemory.
Note:Theentryofatriggeredrestraintsysteminthefaultmemorydoesnotmeanthattherestraint
systemwasdefectiveinthecrashsituation,ratheritonlymeansthattheignitedrestraintsystemisnot
availableforfurthertriggering.
4.3.5.Faultoutput(diagnosis)
WiththeaidoftheBMWdiagnosissystem,IntegratedServiceTechnicalApplication(ISTA),thefault
memorycanbereadoutviathediagnosticinterface.Afterrectifyingthefaultsorafterreplacingthe
triggeredcomponents,thefaultmemorycanbeclearedwiththediagnosiscommand"Clearfault
memory".
4.3.6.Acousticandvisualseatbeltwarning
AllvehicleswithCrashSafetyModulecomestandardwithanacousticandvisualseatbeltwarning.
TheCrashSafetyModuledetectswhetherthedriverandfrontpassengerhavefastenedtheirseatbelt.
Ifnot,acorrespondingacousticandvisualindicatorremindsthemtofastentheirseatbelt.Bothseat
beltbuckleswitchesaremonitoredseparately.

4.3.7.Deactivationoftheairbags
AutomaticdeactivationoftheairbagisprovidedinordertofulfilltherequirementsoftheNational
HighwayTrafficSafetyAdministrationNHTSA.Thechildseatslistedintheregulation(foran
approximatelyone-yearoldchildonthefrontpassengerseat)mustcausedeactivationoftheairbags.
Todoso,aseat-occupancymatisusedtoclassifytheoccupantonthefrontpassengerseat.Asa

distanceandtheheightrelativetothehead.Thisreducestheloadinthecervicalspineareainthe
eventofarear-endcollision.Theheadrestisactivatedatanearlystage,evenbeforethebackward
displacementoftheoccupant'shead.
Inordertoofferasmuchconvenienceaspossible,thefrontsectionofthemanuallyadjustable
headrestraintscanbepulledforwardorpushedbackwardapproximately30mm.Itisatwo-stage
adjustment.Thisallowsforthreedifferentpositionsfortheheadrestraintdepthadjustment.

Intheeventofarear-endcollision,theactiveheadrestraintreducesthedistancebetweenthehead
