CL 444 Test 1 (17/08/2017, 1130 - 1230)

1. A room of a net volume V=1000 m3 houses an NH3 (MW=17) vessel. Fresh air is swept
through the room at a (ventilation) rate of Qv=2000 m3/hr. At a certain time (t = 0) a leak
develops in the vessel resulting in release of NH3 @ Qm=50gm/min into the room air.
Assume that room air is perfectly mixed. (a) How long (minutes) it will take for the NH3
concentration in the room to increase to C=34mg/m3 (below which it is safe)? (b) Can the
concentration of NH3 rise to the Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH) level
of 340mg/m3 because of continued leakage? (c) If the leakage is repaired at a time when the
airborne NH3 concentration is 272mg/m3, how long (minutes) will it take for the
concentration to drop to the safe level? (d) Suppose the leak occurs at the same rate again at
the point when the concentration has dropped to 204mg/m3, what would be maximum
concentration that may be reached in this case? The total pressure of NH3-air mixture in the
room is 1 atm (T = 30oC) and it behaves ideally. (For formulating the governing
equations, use the nomenclature V, Qv, Qm and C, as defined above).

2. A cylindrical storage vessel (diameter = 2.5 m) mounted vertically is maintained at a

constant internal vapour pressure of 0.1 atm (gauge). The level of liquid in the vessel is 5.0
m, when a 5.0 cm diameter leak develops at the tank bottom. (i) If detection takes about 20
min, determine if emergency action is feasible before the tank empties out fully. Liquid
Density = 0.9 gm/cm3. Assume that the coefficient of liquid discharge through the leak
point is 0.6. (ii) If the leak is stopped at half the time needed for complete evacuation of the
tank, how much liquid escapes by then? (Assume CD = 0.6).
