ANNEXXURE-I
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION FOR EDTA CHEMICAL CLEANING

1. OBJECTIVE

The objective of this procedure is to chemically clean and passivate the

internal surfaces of the steam generating portion (water touched surfaces)
and heating surfaces (Economizer) using specified chemicals employing a
single step process. This will render the above mentioned surfaces free of mill
scale, and other deposits and form uniform & smooth protective layer of
magnetite. With this protective layer, the generating surfaces are rendered
passive to generate adequate negative potential under the operating pH to
resist corrosion.

2. PROPOSAL

The objectives are achieved by carrying out the following proposals, by carrying
out two Hot water flushing, generally loose rust, debris, deposits and
other materials left in the Boiler are removed.

Then, it is subjected to acid cleaning for the removal of inconsistent mill

scale and adherent rust. The acid pickled surface is passivated for the
formation of uniform and adherent magnetite layer. Both chemical cleaning
and passivation process are completed in a single step.

3. EQUIPMENT AND SERVICE REQUIRED

Prior to the commencement of chemical cleaning, all the demineralised water

storage tanks should be kept full and the demineralising units kept in
regenerated condition. Approximately, 1000 m3 of demineralised water will be
consumed for the entire process. At any time of acid cleaning, a minimum of
two boiler volumes (app. 300 Cu.m.) of demineralised water should be available
in ready stock to facilitate rapid flushing of the system in the event of
chemistry upset.

system is filled with DM water and circulates for 1 hour. Check the leak at all
points. If so, arrest it properly.
3.2. COLD WATER FLUSHING:

Fill the system with DM Water and flush till clarity is achieved. Check the
turbidity at regular intervals..

3.3. DETERGENT FLUSHING /DEGREASING:

This step is important as we would be rendering the inner surface from

hydrophobic to hydrophilic, which is an important requirement to render the
acid cleaning operation more effective and less time consuming. Fill the system
with DM water and recalculation established. Add alkaline solutions Trisodium
phosphate 0.50%, NaOH 0.3% & Wetting agent 0.05% (or) Coronil 100 .1% of the
total volume of the system. Monitor the alkalinity and pH. After achieving the
steady values drain the system

3.4. DM WATER RINSE:

The system is filled up with DM water and circulated for one hour. During this
rinsing time, samples are checked for pH. This rinsing operation is continued till
the value pH nearer to that of DM water.

3.5. INHIBITED ACID PICKLING:

After DM water rinse, the system is filled up with DM water and recirculation
established. Once the steady conditions are achieved throughout the system,
add Inhibitor Coronil 240 (0.2%) followed by gradual addition of 1% of
hydrofluoric acid mixture. During process monitor total iron, strength of Acid in
the inlet and outlet sampling points at regular intervals. Circulation is continued
for maximum period of 2 hours and till getting steady values of Iron & acid.
Drain the whole solution from the system. The drained acid solution is
neutralized using lime and then discharged to the drains.

3.6.DM WATER RINSE:

The System is filled up with DM water and circulated for one hour. During this
rinsing time, samples are checked for pH and iron. This rinsing operation is
continued till the iron value drops below 50 ppm and pH nearer to that of DM
water.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3.7. CITRIC ACID RINSE & PASSIVATION:

The Pickled surface can be easily passivated using passivating agent either
hydrogen peroxide or nitrite based chemicals. The aim is to form a coherent,
adhesive, non porous, thin layer of gamaferric oxide. The layer is formed under
expansion and hence is passive and protective.

Now fill the system with DM water and establish circulation. Add ammoniated
citric acid to have 0.5% and circulate 1 2 hours with pH of about 3.5 4.0.
Then increase the pH to 9 9.5 by addition of Ammonia further to add o.5% of
passivating chemicals. This solution will be circulated for 4-6 hrs, then drain the
solution under atmospheric condition.
