Project 1 Industrial Plant Demand

The layout of an industrial plant load is shown in the figure. The load is divided into three
manufacturing processes, space heating and miscellaneous loads (lights, heat/air, facilities, etc).
The hourly normalized kW demands for each group are given in the table below (e.g. kW
demand per rated power given in the figure).

1. Recalculate the table columns to show the kW demand values. Enter in a spreadsheet (e.g.
MS-Excel).
2. Compute the total hourly kW demand of the plant. Plot in Excel the bar graph of the
demands of each group and the plant.
3. Calculate the plant peak and average demands, as well as the load factor and the demand
factor of the plant.
4. Compute the contribution coefficient of each process to the plant peak power.
5. Compute the diversity factor between the five load groups of the plant.
6. Suppose that the power efficiency of the utility substation supplying the plant is 96% when
the plant demand equals its peak value. Use the method of the loss factor to compute the
energy losses of the substation for the duration of a year.
7. What is the peak current and power of the transformer supplying processes 1, 2 and 3?
(Hint use the power factors of each process.)
8. The utility rate structure is as follows:
a. Demand charge is $0.95 per each kW of peak demand
b. Energy charge:
First 100,000 kWh $6000 (this includes also fixed fees)
Next 200,000 kWh: $0.032/kWh
Next 200,000 kWh: $0.028/kWh
Next 200,000 kWh: 0.021/kWh
Additional kWh: 0.018/kWh
Determine the monthly utility bill of the plant.
