UNIT 2 READING LEISURE ACTIVITIES/HOBBIES

A day in the life of a soldier
This is Sergeant Harry Davis. He is a noncommissioned officer in the American Army.
His program starts in the morning with the wakeup at 0430 (zero four thirty) from
Monday to Friday. After he comes back from the physical training (PT) he sometimes
has a long shower if he has enough time. Sergeant Davis doesnt usually eat breakfast
because he likes eating more in the afternoon when he has lunch at the mess hall. On
Mondays Sgt. Davis has classes all day long. On Tuesdays and Fridays he has field
training exercise (FTX) from 0800 (zero eight hundred) to 1145 (eleven forty five) and
on Wednesdays and Thursdays he has communications training and map reading. At the
weekend he enjoys his free time.
If he is not on duty, Sgt. Davis works until 1530 (fifteen thirty), then he goes to his
room. He usually asks for an afternoon pass after he finishes work and he spends his
afternoon doing leisure activities. He dislikes going to the noncommissioned officers
club so he goes out if it is a nice day or he simply stays indoors and reads a book. He
loves reading because its one of his hobbies. If he goes out, he has to be back to his
room by 2130 (twentyone thirty) in the evening. Lightsout time is at 2200 (twenty
two hundred) when he goes to bed.

Hello! My name is Greta Brown. I am a corporal. I am a squad leader in a platoon of thirty

men. My program starts at 5:00hrs when we have the wakeup. At 5:30 we do the physical
training and after that we go to serve breakfast at the mess hall. We have all kinds of activities
during the day. For example at 8:00hrs we start our day with a 4 kilometer foot march and we
come back at 11:00hrs to have lunch. At 11:30 we have map reading and nuclear, biological
and chemical training (NBC for short) until 15:00hrs and usually have dinner at 16:00hrs.
Sometimes I ask for an afternoon pass. I love spending my free time outdoors. If its a
fine weather, I usually go for a walk. Then I go to the noncommissioned officers club to talk
to my other colleagues.
On the weekend I occasionally go to the gym and do some fitness exercises. On Sundays
I like jogging in the morning and playing tennis in the afternoon.
By 21:00hrs I have to come back to my room because the lightsout are at 22:00hrs. If I
have time before lightsout, I watch the news on TV, have a shower and then, at 22:00hrs, I
go to sleep.

Patricia Denning stars in a sad movie about ambition and heartbreak.

When Cecilia leaves college in Texas, she has everything: a wonderful boyfriend, Carl, an
interesting job and an expensive house in a pretty town. Her life is perfect. Even her black
Labrador dog, Perky, is a star: he wins the local dog competition and Hollywood wants to put
him in a movie.

Cecilia goes to Hollywood with him and leaves her boyfriend alone back home. When the
studio fires Perky, Cecilia decides to stay in Hollywood and tries to get other movie roles for
her beautiful dog.

Carl gives Cecilia an ultimatum: come home and stop behaving crazily, or stay there forever.
Cecilia decides to stay in Hollywood and wants to become an actress herself. She sends Perky
back to Texas and starts an acting course. After six months, Cecilia realizes she can't act and
she misses home, but it's too late. Carl has found another girlfriend. Cecilia tries to win him
back, and also discovers a lot about herself on her long journey.

This is a very sad movie, which makes you think about what we want from life. Patricia
Denning is very convincing as Cecilia, but the star of the movie is gorgeous Perky, the black
Labrador who steals our hearts. Black Hollywood is in cinemas from next week.
Homework Writing Unit 2: Free time activities

I usually get up at 6:30. First I turn off the alarm clock and then I turn on the radio to listen to
news. Then I walk to the bathroom, where I wash my face and my hand. After that I shave my face and
I brush my teeth. Then I walk in the bedroom where I take of my pajamas and I put on my clothes. After
that I walk in the kitchen and feed my dog. I never eat early in the morning. Then I take out the dog for
a walk. We stay outside ten or fifteen minutes and then we go inside. After that I take my backpack and
I go to work. I stay there from 08:00 to 16:00. Sometimes I leave from work at 14:00 because I go to
school. There I study Public Administration. After work I go shopping and then I go home. Sometimes
I play football or take a walk in the park in the afternoon. I eat something and then I do my homework
or I read books. I like to read non-fiction books and magazines. Sometimes I take a nap before doing
my homework or studying. In the evening I prepare and eat dinner. Then I watch a movie or listen to
music. I like war movies and classical music. After that I take a shower and I go to sleep because in the
next day I must get up early again.

I usually clean my house once a week Friday in the afternoon or in the weekend. Sometimes I
travel to Cluj-Napoca to my girlfriend on weekends. I really like this city. There are many types of
cultural locations and events. Sometimes we go to the museum, to an art gallery or to the botanical
garden to see plants from around the world. When she is at Bistria we go to picnic or go out with our
friends. I don't often have time to socialize with friends during the week. Sometimes we go fishing. I
love to go fishing, it's one of my hobbies. Twice or three times a month I go swimming. I like swimming
because it's relaxing.
