Ceramic matrix composite

Matrix Composites for Brake Discs friction material for brake
discs was developed that
combines high fracture
toughness with good
oxidation and abrasion
resistance, good thermal
conductivity, and the
appropriate friction
characteristics.
Preparation, Properties and Application Peng Xiao et.al. Good mechanical
of C/C-SiC Composites fabricated by properties. The value of
Warm Compacted-in situ Reaction flexural strength and
compressive strength could
reach 160 and 112 MPa,
respectively. The impact
strength was about 2.5
kJm2. The C/C-SiC brake
composites showed
excellent tribological
performance,
including high coefficient of
friction (0.38), good
abrasive resistance (1.10
m/cycle) and brake
steadily on dry condition.
These results showed that
C/C-SiC composites
fabricated by warm
compacted-in situ reaction
had excellent
properties for use as brake
materials.

impact toughness of C/C

up to 265.4 MPa, 28.1 GPa

respectively. Heat treatment

C/SiC dual matrix composites strength at
the fibre/matrix interface,
and the value of flexural
strength and compressive
strength of the C/C-SiC
composites can reach 240
and 210
MPa, respectively. The
friction coefficients are
between 0.41 and 0.54.
Wear rates are not sensitive
to the brake speed and
remain constant
at about 0.02 cm3/MJ, and
the friction coefficient is
stable. Frictional films with
a thickness of 1~3 m are
formed on the worn surface
of the composites upon
braking. The wear
mechanism changes with
increased braking speed,
from abrasion at 8m/s,
adhesion at 12
m/s and 16m/s to fatigue
and oxidation at 20 m/s and
24 m/s, respectively.

is an important basic
property of wear resistant
materials, often used to
evaluate other
characteristics such as wear
resistance and strength.
Understanding the above
relationships provides a
means for using hardness as
a property evaluation tool
and gives insight into the
basic nature of the hardness
measurement on particulate
composites.
