METHOD STATEMENT
FOR
ON SITE PULL-OUT TEST FOR SOIL NAILS / DEADMAN ANCHOR

A. Equipment Needed
1. 1 No Hollow Hydraulic Stressing Jack for the minimum capacity
of the anchor to be tested.
2. 1 No prepared Anchor Tip protruded out to fit stressing jack
with Lock-nuts prepared with C-channels ready welded (see
Typical Details of Waling System).
3. 2 Nos calibrated Dial Gauge
4. 1 No calibrated Pressure Gauge
5. 1 No Hydraulic Pump

B. Setup
1. Install the Soil Nail / Deadman Anchor with bar, leaving the
rebar protruded out of the sheet pile wall and C-channel
another approximately 500-600mm, to suit the hydraulic jack.
2. Place the hydraulic jack onto the C-channel with Bearing
Plates (see diagram) and secure the T32 rebar going through
the hollow jack with the lock nuts.
3. Ensure the jack is not fully retracted. Allow approximately 1
of jack ram un-retracted. Lock the lock nuts firmly.

4. Setup an independent frame to place the dial gauges. This
frame can rest onto the sheet pile wall or planted firmly into
the ground.
5. Place the 2 Nos dial gauges on either side of the end of the
base plate at the tip of the jack, so as to measure the
extension of the jack while stressing.

Anchor Pullout Test.

C. Test Method

The installed Soil Nail / Deadman Anchor will be randomly

selected for this test.

1. General : The test load shall involve jacking (pulling) the

anchor rebar using the hydraulic jack. The load is read off
from the calibrated pressure gauge psi reading. The extension
will be read using the 2 Nos dial gauges affixed to the tip of
the jack.
2. Extend the jack a little (say 1) prior to locking the
locknuts. This is to ease unlocking upon unloading. Fix the
dial gauges and all necessary apparatus as per Item B.
3. Load the jack as per the steps in the loading chart. Increase
the load as per the given steps and hold for the specified
holding time in the chart.
4. Take the extension reading from the dial gauges and also a
steel ruler or measuring tape to record the ram extension,
which can be taken from the distance of the 2 bearing plates.
5. Shall the extension exceed the capacity of the dial gauge
(50mm), use only the steel ruler or measuring tape to record
the jacks extension, which will have a precision of 0.5mm.
6. For the unloading cycle, do the same procedure as per steps 3-
5.
7. Upon completion of the test, release all load in the ground
anchor. The anchor will be locked-off upon completion of the
entire waler.
