Methodology

Mainstreet surveyed a random stratied sample of

1,000 Alberta adults from August 25-30, 2017
through live interviews. Landline and Cell lines
were included. Responses were weighted using
demographic and geographic information to
targets based on the 2016 Census.

The margin of error for survey results is 3.1

percentage points, 19 times out of 20 for the total.

Results may not add up to 100 due to rounding.

McDAVID WINS ALBERTA POPULARITY CONTEST

September 5, 2017 (Ottawa, ON) A new Mainstreet/Postmedia poll nd Connor McDavid is the most
liked personality in the province out of a list of 18 politicians and athletes. The Mainstreet/Postmedia poll
has a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

We asked 1,000 Albertans what they thought about 18 individuals said Quito Maggi, President of
Mainstreet Research (@MainStResearch). Of the 18, half received net positive favourability ratings
(favourable minus unfavourable) while the other half received net negative ratings.

48% of Albertans say they have a favourable view of both Connor McDavid and Brian Jean, however, 9%
say they have a negative view of McDavid while 19% say the same for Jean. That means McDavid has a
net score of +39 while Jean has a net score of + 29. Flames Player, Johnny Gaudreau, has a net score of
+33, so the top three in the province are McDavid, Gaudreau and Jean.

Rounding out the top 5 are two CFL players, Bo Levi Mitchell makes fourth place with a +27. while Mike
Reilly makes fth with a net score of +15.

There is a clear partisan divide in the province as almost all Conservative politicians scored net positive
ratings and every NDP politician scored a net negative rating. The one exception to this rule is MLA Derek
Fildebrandt who scored a -18, putting him below several NDP cabinet ministers.

The one Albertan few can identify is interim United Conservative Party Leader Nathan Cooper. 85% of
Albertans either did not know who he was or did not have a clear opinion about him.

Finally, when we look at how mayors performed on the list it is truly a tale of two cities. Don Iveson
scored well in Edmonton though he is not well known in the province, his positive score bodes well for
re-election. Meanwhile, Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi is actually more popular in Edmonton than he is in
Calgary and registered a -15 in his home city. Its important to note that favourability is not the same as
approval or voting intention, nished Maggi.

evenly split, with 45% saying
they have a favourable
compared to 43% who have
an unfavourable one.

The provincial Minister of
Finance scores almost as
badly as the Premier, just
one point away from a tie.
Cecis best numbers dont
come from Calgary (where
his riding is located) but
from Edmonton. Every NDP
personality will see better
results in Edmonton
regardless of the location of
their constituency.
16. JUSTIN TRUDEAU (-30)

Unfavourable
The Prime Minister scored
well in Saskatchewan but
sees a tough score of -30 in
Alberta. One ray of sunshine
is Trudeau continues to poll
well in Edmonton where his
net score of +2 matches
Notleys own score in the
city.
15. NAHEED NENSHI (-20)
33% Favourable, 53%
Unfavourable
Nenshi is well known in the
province with just 14% of
Albertans saying they have
no opinion of him (not sure
or not familiar). Nenshi
scores closer to how NDP
personalities have scored in
the survey rather than how
fellow mayor Don Iveson
scored. In Calgary, where
Nenshi will face re-election
later this year, Nenshi nets a
-15.
14. DEREK
FILDEBRANDT (-18)
19% Favourable, 37%
Unfavourable
The embattled MLA made
headlines for an expense
asco - and it appears
Albertans were paying
attention. He is the only
conservative personality to
score a negative
favourability rating in this
survey.
13. SHANNON PHILLIPS (-16)
9% Favourable, 25%
Unfavourable
40% have no opinion of the
Minister for the Environment,
but for those who do it is
mostly negative. Phillips best
score is a -3 from Edmonton.
12. DAVID EGGEN (-11)
11% Favourable, 22%
Unfavourable
Eggen has a +8 from
Edmonton but outside
Albertas capital it is
negative scores for the
Minister of Education.
11. SARAH HOFFMAN (-5)
23% Favourable, 28%
Unfavourable
Despite her being deputy
Premier, almost 50% of
Albertans have no clear
opinion of Homan.
Homans best score is a
+24 from Edmonton.
11. BRIAN MASON (-4)
23% Favourable, 27%
Unfavourable
The best performing NDP
politician in the survey is
Mason who boasts a +24
from Edmonton.
Mason scores a -7 in Calgary
and a -14 outside Albertas
urban centres. Mason is the
longest serving NDP MLA in
and has sat in the legislature
over 20 years.

In interim leader of the
United Conservative Party is
tied for 8th. Though he has a
+5 net score, 85% of
Albertans have no opinion of
him.

The Conservative Party
leader still has work to do as
45% of Albertans have no
opinion of him yet. But with
a high-prole position time is
on his side and we expect
greater positive numbers as
the next federal election
approaches.

20% Favourable, 14%
Unfavourable
Edmontons mayor is mostly
unknown across the rest of
the provinces but holds a +31
in Edmonton which bodes
well for his fall election
campaign.
6. JASON KENNEY (+10)
39% Favourable, 29%
Unfavourable
Kenneys favourability
numbers come from outside
Albertas urban centres. In
Calgary, he currently scores
a net zero while he has a -7
in Edmonton. Outside the
cities he has a +25. Kenney
performs much better with
women than men (+17 vs +3)
and performs best with
younger voters (+26).

25% Favourable, 10%
Unfavourable
The Quarterback for the
Edmonton Eskimos makes
the top 5 with a +15. Reilly
scores best in Edmonton but
many in Calgary have no
clear opinion.
4. BO LEVI MITCHELL (+27)
35% Favourable, 8%
Unfavourable
Levi Mitchell scores well
across the province but
scores best in Calgary. He
has higher scores among
men compared to women
(+32 vs +23).
3. BRIAN JEAN (+29)
48% Favourable, 19%
Unfavourable
Jean is the best performing
politician in the province but
this may not mean much
when it comes to his
leadership election where it
is party members who will
vote - not the general
population.
2. JOHNNY GAUDREAU (+33)

and scores the highest net
score in Calgary (+33) of all
personalities polled. That
being said, a full 51% of
Albertans have no clear
opinion of him.

With a +39 provincewide
and a staggering +68 in
Edmonton, McDavid is the
most popular personality
from the 18 names we
elded. McDavid scores well
among all age groups but
has higher negatives among
men than women. He is the
most popular personality in
the province in 2017.
