1. You need a max 25 member team who will work on various subassemblies or
Edits
department of team. For ex. Design , Analysis , Fabrication, Market Research.

2. You need to be good at design softwares like CATIA , SOLIDWORKS ,LOTUS

, ANSYS ,HYPERMESH , ADAMS etc.

3. You require a very sound and logical knowledge of you core subjects like
Strength of Material , Theory of machines , IC Engines , Engineering and
Machine Drawing ,Automobile Engg etc.

4. You or your team must be very good at observing and reverse Engineering.

5. Financially sound for registration and logistics for Virtual Baja.

6. Great knowledge and expertise with good communication skills to explain

your design.

7. Finally to clear Virtual Baja you need to convince them through your design
that actually can you fabricate this design into real one ir not. Because 450
teams are participating and out of them only 150 are going ahead so its very
important that your design should meet and match the current ATV
standards. Means you might ended design a good vehicle according to
you but the design is outdated then it will be problem for you. So keeping
updates is also imp.

For virtual round you need to know what are your shortcomings and how you gonna

Proper research and a sound knowledge will get you through. (and ofcourse a bit of
luck).

BAJA Virtual Round judges generally focus on what you know about the things
you've incorporated in your ATV.

Virtual round bcomes a bit tough for the teams which fall into the old category
(previous year participants) as judges are more intrested in the changes you've
brought upon in your ATV.
So old teams have to be cautious enough to show the dierences clearly.

Steering
Rack and pinion is to be essentially used.

Show the specs such as steering angle, Steering ratio, lock to lock angles,
turning radius.

Bump steer elimination can be shown.

Customized knuckle designs(if used) and material used can be shown.

Steering eort is a one favorite ques. Figure out to nd it.

Power Transmission
Type of system used (Manual /Automatic)

Standard gear ratios value.

Acceleration , max speed values in each gear , Engine specs etc.

Brakes & Tires

Circuit layout , braking distance , pedal force , master cylinder specs to be
shown.

Tire specs.

Suspension
A arm analysis and specs.

Motion ratio etc

Wheel geometry (front and rear).

Simulation of A arm travel can be shown.

Design 3D views and analysis

DMFEA is critical . Pay special attention.

Roll Cage material selection

Cost analysis

Things before sowing your Baja team seed.

Make sure everyone in team has their specialized stream( suspension,brakes

,spaceframe,etc) knowledge.If not make use of many ebooks like vehicle
dynamics like miliken Milken ,tune to win by Carroll smith

Make rule book as your teams twinkle twinkle little star. Make everyone to
read is wiser and deeper.

Install the respected streams softwares in their systems

(lotus,Adams,anysys,creo etc)

Make sure the respected stream are well learnt in their calculation and
design.

Sowing your Baja seed

Make sure your design stream completes the design rst - roll cage

Have a separate packing stream to reduces the space inside the buggy and
assembling .

Followed by design submission of other streams

Final assembly of all the stream parts in the buggy.

Soiling it with Marketing

Make Gantt charts ,market survey,dfmea reports,break even analysis.

Theres nothing you need to prepare other than what you do in the calculation part of
your sub-system which are the only requirements you need to include and good
presentation skills is an added advantage.

Try to justify whatever the value you included in the slide as justication makes you
stand out.

There is virtual rulebook. Follow it by heart.

Remember the whole rulebook of main baja.

Understand about dierent subsystems.

There is no particular way to prepare. You learn about the things involved and then
design your car. Present your ideas to judges.

Divide your work according to the sub assemblies of your ATV. Make a team plan for
the coming one or two months to ensure the completion of your presentation before
time. nally a good team work of technical sound and dynamic presentation will lead
you to success. I will divide the major sub- assemblies bellow.

1. Roll cage.
1.1 Prepare a good cad model as per described constraints of BAJA rule book.
1.2 Ensure proper space in the roll cage for sub assemblies.
1.3 Check your Roll cage on impact test(front, rear, roll over, side impact) and
formulate a table for the results obtained.
1.4 show the relative gure of roll cage and human body for ergonomics
section, and sh eye view of the driver from the seating position
1.5 Material selection and total estimation of weight of roll cage and vehicle.
1.6 Calculate the expected center of gravity.

2. Power-train assembly
2.1 select the type of gear box.
 2.2 calculate the gear ratio, gradeability factor, acceleration, tractive eort.

2.3 calculate the maximum speed in all gears
2.4 prepare a graph for engine RPM vs speed vs tractive eort in all gears.

3. Steering Assembly
3.1 x your wheel track distance, and the calculate the steering specication
3.2 mention all the angles included in steering assembly such as king pin
inclination, steering angle, camber, caster, toe in angle.
3.3 calculate steering eort, turning circle radius.

4. Brake Assembly
4.1 mention the type of brakes used
4.2 stopping distance at various speeds
4.3 braking force calculation
4.4 A circuit diagram containing master cylinder to brake pads.

5. Suspension
5.1 calculate the weight distribution, stationary vehicle while braking and
acceleration.
5.2 design of spring and damping ratio.
5.3 calculate the dimensions of arm length, inclination angle,
5.4 maximum travel of the arm and mounting of suspension in the roll cage

6. Design validation, DFMEA, Project plan, Team distribution.

6.1 Make a design validation plan and for all the sub assemblies which will
ensure completion of target within time and with quality allocate a team
member in each sub assemblies
6.2 DFMEA is the most important slide in the presentation, judges will surely
question you so, allocation of RPN number must be choosen wisely.
6.3 Prepare a project plan in MS Project and project the contour plan
ensuring all the dependent assemblies must be given time accordingly
6.4 In the last slide you may include team management plan that makes an
good impact too.

7. GO- GREEN: if you have any specic idea about reducing the smoke
emission, or conrolling the CO,CO2, HFCs level, or reducing the noise level
then allocate one slide, but be specic and have knowledge in depth.

8. If you have any innovative design in your vehicle please highlight that in
other slide that will earn extra credit for you

prepare a presenting team from now itself so that they must be clear about their job,
and in front of judges a smooth question hour would be tackled. work with a
systematic approach that will be more helpful. the judges panel will include some
engineers of R & D department so don't try to fool them. apologies for poor english :)
