Abstract
This update study had a purpose to determinate the influence of Co-op Co-op
cooperative method in the reading comprehension in English area in fourth grade
of Secondary in Virgin Family school, Chorrillos, because I met as a lot of
students in our country dont understand to read in your mother language, problem
that is carried to the reader comprehension in English, with this problem I believed
necessary to demonstrate the application of the Co-op Co-op cooperative method
will increase the comprehension in English area in literal, inferencial and critical
level.

los equipos en forma rpida y silenciosa;
(circles of learning), tutora entre iguales (peer tutoring), aprendizaje cooperativo
deben aprender.
Jigsaw or Puzzle
las ideas principales; seleccionar la informacin segn su importancia en el texto;
relacin emisor-receptor, roles, etc.).
La Lectura
52

integral y docente eficiente, estudiante activo.
65

nivel literal, inferencial y crtico.

experiencia y llevarlo a clase.
115
un texto y yendo ms all hacer juicios crticos, calificar eventos, personajes, juzgar

Reading 1: From Smoke Signals to e-mail
From the Stone Age to the present, people have shown a definite need to send
a message to one another despite being far away.
In 1084 B.C., a chain of fires on mountaintops was used to relate the news of the
fall of Troy to people in Greece. In the past, native people in the Americas used
smoke from fires to transmit messages. They developed a code in which certain
combinations that special meanings. For example, two parallel of smoke
indicated the successful return of a war party.
Almost anything that makes a noise has been used for signaling. Cyrus, an
ancient Persian ruler, established lines of signal towers. At each one, people with
powerful voices shouted a message to the next tower. A kind of drums talk is still
used in Central Africa today, although few who are not natives have been able to
understand it. The sender uses a drum that can produce a high or low tone.
Because the local dialect alternates in these tones, the sender is able to simulate
speech with the drums.
In modern times, people have communicated by letter, telegraph and telephone.
But no one method has become as widespread as quickly as the use of e-mail.
In 1990, the number of people on e-mail was small, but by the end of the twentieth
century, there were 263 million e-mail boxes, and in the United States alone, 9.3
million messages were sent a day. And the e-mail is expected to increase by 15
to 25 percent a year.
The first e-mail took place in 1971, and according to its sender, Ray Tomlinson,
it was probably the following QWERTYUIOP. What was significant about that?
Nothing, really. This is just the top row of keys on an English language keyboard.
Tomlinson was just testing out an idea. He had no concept that he was going to
start a revolution in communication.
Tomlinson was one of the groups of scientists who were working on developing
better computers. The scientists at his site were able to send a message to a
mailbox on the computer on their site. Other scientists could view the messages
in the mailbox. But there were other computers at other sites where scientists
were working on the same project.
Tomlinsons idea was to figure out a way to deliver messages to mailboxes on
those remote computers. He used the @ sign to identify messages that were
headed out of the local machine to the more distant ones. And the rest is history.
151
The internet has become so popular nowadays that when you ask someone his
or her address, the answer might be Jsmith@net.com instead of 123 king Street.

A sandwich can never substitute for a good meal: Some sandwiches can be
complete meals. They include protein and vegetables. You can eat sandwiches
sometimes, but they arent the best choice when you want to lose weight.
Adults dont need milk: Milk is a complete food, and it is a very important food
for everybody. Yogurt and cheese are also milk products, and they are good for
you, too.
Drinking water during meals makes you fat: Water has no calories. When you
drink water with your meals, it helps to push more food into stomach. Water
slows digestion, and it increases the time for food to be absorbed. So you put on
weight.
Red meat is bad for you: Red meat takes a longer time to digest. It has more
fat than other meat and can increase ones cholesterol level. This varies from
person to person.
Oil is bad for your health: Oils have more or less saturated fat. Vegetable oils
usually have less fat. Olive oil, especially, is good for you. It increases the good
cholesterol and helps to eliminate the bad one.
Going hungry helps to lose weight: In some cases, obese people need to go
on a very strict diet. But when you just want to lose some weight, it isnt a good
idea to stop eating.
Sugar in candy and soda help to put on weight: This kind of sugar is a quick
source of energy. It makes you fat if you take more than the body can use up.
Dont eat pasta and cereal if you want to lose weight: Pasta and cereals can
actually be part of diets when you want to lose weight. They provide vitamins,
iron and mineral salts, and they help the digestive system.
Eggs at night are bad for you: The time you eat and egg is not important. Eggs
can be a problem because they contain a lot of fat, especially if they are fried. If
you dont have cholesterol problems, you can eat three eggs a week, because
theyre rich in protein.
Big meals at night help gain weight: Digestion at night is slow and difficult
because we arent very active then. Fat is retained, or kept, more easily at night.

Reading 4: Teenage stress
Stress: The mental and physical strain or the non-specific response of the body
to any demand made upon it. Stress is a chemical reaction that takes place inside
the body when there is a basic need to adapt to or resist changing internal or
external influences. It is a response meant to return the body and mind to a state
of equilibrium and balance.
The causes of stress
Although adolescence is often viewed by parents as a carefree period of life,
some studies show some teenagers experience the most stress of all people.
They can experience stress related to money, family problems, self-esteem,
acceptance by their peers, getting accepted into college, choosing a career, and
pressure to do well in school, sports or clubs.
According to experts, one of the main reasons for stress is that childhood has
gotten shorter, and the perception of children has changed. Since TV is available
to any audience, children can get messages that were probably meant for adults,
and dividing line between childhood and adulthood left to exist. Children do not
play as many of their own games as they used to, and most of their games and
sports nowadays are those preferred by adults. Youngsters wear similar clothing
to that of adults, and they use adult language that once never to be heard around
a child. Young people these days are under tremendous pressure to achieve
please and succeed. They are expected to adjust to social environmental
changes that past generations never had to deal with. The demands made on
preteens and teens by modern life have definitely increased the level of stress.
According a studio took place by scientists group part from Michigan University,
Ana Arbor said one thirds part of American teenagers experiment stress for some
expectation of their parents and the society and two thirds experiments symptoms
of stress once a week.
Tips for dealing with stress
All humans experience stress. It is necessary part of life. The response to stress
is what often needs to be controlled. A persons feelings, attitudes and outlook on
life affect his or her ability to deal with stress.
You should avoid unnecessary worry. Thinking about a problem in order to arrive
at a solution can be positive, but constant worry that is not constructive
accomplishes nothing. It usually just makes situations more stressful.
164
Become better organized. Plan activities a step at a time so that parts are
accomplished. This gives you more self-esteem and more reasonable deadlines.
You should be aware of the symptoms of stress. Some symptoms are:
-Moodiness.
-Insomnia or other sleeping disorders;
-Lowered body resistance to colds, flu, or other diseases;
-Preoccupation with negative/angry thoughts or feelings.
-Unusual behavior patterns; and
-Loss of appetite, or eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia.
When you know you have a problem with stress, try to solve it one step at a time.
Part of the problem could be trying to do too much at once. You should take it in
easy stages.
Conclusions
Stress doesnt need to be negative. Some doctors say that you should laugh and
smile more frequently. When you laugh and smile, your body relaxes, and it
causes a positive reaction.

Reading 5: Decorating the body
Do you notice people on the street with brightly colored red or blue hair or people
on the beach with pictures or patterns painted on their bodies? You might think
169
that these Are the latest trends. Well, think again. People have used color
decoration on their bodies for a long long time.
The most antique tattoo found in Chinchorro in the Peruvian coast. There were
tattoos from 2000 B.C.
The word tattoo comes from ttau that means mark or color that designs twice.
In North America the primitives used tattoos as a ritual, when a person changes
from teens to adult to protect the soul.
In occident the tattoo arrived by sea. The expeditions of Colombo and James
Cook to Polynesia Island were the beginning of tattoos to Occident.
In fact, recently scientists have found the remains of a culture that dates back
80,000 to 100,000 years in a cave, on the southern part of South Africa. In this
cave, called Blombos cave, they found some of the oldest tools of stone and
bone. But more important, they found a lot of ochre, a red colored iron ochre.
Scientists say that some pieces of the ochre look like crayons for drawing. Most
scientists think that prehistoric people used the pieces of ochre to draw symbolic
decorations on their bodies. Some scientists think that the people painted their
bodies to be attractive to members of the opposite sex. Scientists can also trace
makeup back 10,000 years to ancient Egypt. The Ancient Egyptians used to grind
colored stones like green malachite into powders that they rubbed on their
eyelids. Both men and women used this eye makeup to be more attractive. More
than 1,000 years ago, the ancient Celts in Britain dyed their hair with bright colors,
most often red, but sometimes bright blue.
Some of these ancient traditions continue into the twenty-first century. People in
some cultures used them for special occasions. In the west African nation of
Niger, a group of nomads have a kind of beauty contest that expends for one
week every year. Males paint their faces with bright makeup and wear elaborate
costumes. They draw bright lines down their noses and paint patterns of white
dots on their cheeks. They are judged on looks and personality by women from
neighboring groups. In other cultures, the use of body painting is a bit more
serious and it sometimes marks passages in an individuals life. In India and
Pakistan, the use of henna, a plant that is able to dye any surface is common for
rituals before marriage. Brides hands are painted with beautiful patterns. In New
Zealand, the indigenous people, the Maori, have long used facial tattoos to show
which community they belonged to and their place in that community. Tattooing
170
is adding permanent color to the skin by putting pigment under the skin or by
cutting the skin to make scars. The traditional Maori facial tattoos had beautiful
curving lines and some Maoris who want to preserve their heritage still get tattoos
today.
You should know that the tattoos are made with electric machines and use
several kinds of water to inject ink in the dermis, lowest level of the skin to the
difference of the epidermis is the highest level of the skin. The dermis doesnt
flake and the ink keeps in the skin. For it, is difficult to eliminate the tattoos and
can cause problems in the skin as granules (red grains caused by inflammation
or allergic reactions. The tattoos put in dangerous to infect of AIDS (sida),
tetanus, B and C hepatitis.
Risks with piercings and tattoos
Allergic to the material to be derivate from metals with nickel, titanium and
niobium. Infections by bacterium.
It is not advised in diabetes people, renal failure, congenital cardiac heart, allergic
reactions and if the people with family with hemophilia and coagulation problems.
The people with tattoos cant give blood because it is infect.
The hipster culture is a group that makes tattoos with different designs as: lineal
tattoos use lines or triangles, the dot works is a base of dots with black color
and arrows, alchemy symbols tattoos with moon faces made in underarms,
absurd tattoos with objects as: TV, cameras, radios, origami tattoos with forms
and figures that make in the wrists, the infinite tattoos that explains the life and

Reading 7: Technology changes everything, even bodies!
We all know that the twentieth century will be remembered as the time when
technology changed, but something people dont realize is that our bodies may
also have been changed by technology. However, before you think that it is
another boring article of healthcare and turn over the page, just let me tell you
that Im talking about an actual change to the way we use our bodies.
Anybody who has sat through a Nintendo marathon know that, after a while your
thumb starts to get sore from pushing the buttons so much, and you normally stop
playing. However, if you were a real fanatic and couldnt cope a score you finish
playing. And what would happen to your thumb then? It would eventually grow
much stronger, exactly whats happened in various parts of the world according
to a new study.
The study was carried out in nine cities around the world and shows that the
thumbs of people under twenty-five are now their most frequently used digit, and
the index finger has been left behind usage. Scientists think that this change is
directly linked to the use of handheld technology, like games and cell phones.
Someone who is not used with a cell phone will type in the numbers using one or
more fingers, but most young people use their thumbs, often without even looking
at the keypad.
As a result thumbs are getting stronger and bigger and although the human body
has evolved throughout time, scientists say that such a change would normally
take place over several generations, not a few years, and offer it as proof that we
are changed by technology as much as we change it.
The same study found the thumb usage was highest in japan, a country with a
long love affair with technology, where young people refer to themselves as oya
yubi sedai The thumb generation. However, what is surprising is that a certain
traditional actions related to the fingers are now being carried out by the thumb.
Japanese kids will now often use their thumb to ring doorbells and to point at
things, although the study doesnt show if they now use their fingers to give the
thumbs upsign!

with years ago, only to lose her.Sit down, please, Mr. Sullivan, he said, his mouth
struggling to say the horrible last name.
Dr. Brewski waited in vain for a sign of recognition from Sullivan, But there was
nothing, only a look of fear in his eyes. Thats how it is, thought Dr. Brewski, you
ruin someones life, and then you forget all about them. Now, Mr. Sullivan, Im
sure that the doctors have already explained the risks of hearth surgery to you.
There is a good chance of success, but things can easily get complicated, and if
that happens, well, You knowDr. Brewski looked at the patient lying on the
operating table, his chest already opened, the heart beating under spotlight as if
were an actor that knew that this could be its last chance to perform. One of the
countrys top heart surgeons, he found it impossible to concentrate, because this
was not an ordinary operation and this was not an ordinary patient. Years ago,
when he was a medical student, Dr. Brewski had gone out with a girl called Mary
for two years. He loved her and she loved him; he was only waiting to finish his
course to ask her to marry him, and she said that she wanted to, that she wanted
to have children with him. But then, one day, walking through Central park, he
saw Mary with another man, kissing him. The man was Nicholas Sullivan. He ran
back to his apartment, crying and when Mary came to visit him she told him the
truth: She loved Sullivan. They broke up the same day and he never saw Mary
again, though he spent many years thinking about her, about how she had he
thought, If I had the chance, Id kill Sullivan and nobody will ever know. All
doctors make mistakes .But why kill him if he wasnt with Mary? Maybe Mary
had left Sullivan after just a few months. Maybe theyd gotten married and then
divorced. Dr. Brewski was married with two children, so why should he care? But
how could he forget the pain he felt in those days, the pain Sullivan caused? His
life would certainly have been very different, if he had married his sweetheart.
Sullivan broke his heart, but if Dr. Brewski wanted to, he could save Sullivans
heart now

home. However, scientists are predicting since twenty-first century will see great
changes not just in the way we live, but in the place where we live.
How many times have you been to the supermarket, arrived home and youve
forgotten the thing you most need to buy? Well, with the refrigerators that you will
soon be available, youre never going to have that problem again. The minute
you run out of something, all you need do is let the computer know and the item
will be delivered to your door. And thats not the only change that will going on
the kitchen: ovens will become more sensitive and be able to cook the perfect
meal for you, while new washing machines wont be using soap powder anymore,
because scientists in Japan are close to perfecting a system that uses nothing
more than the power of water to clean clothes. You can almost hear the
environment breathing a sigh of relief. And as if all that wasnt good enough, more
and more clothes are being designed so that you never have to iron them.
Of course, it wont be just the kitchen thats changed. We all know how exciting it
is to see the latest games console that can connect to the internet and play DVDs,
but theyre only just the beginning because: listening to music, watching DVDs,
surfing the web, and showing your little brother just how good you are at the latest
games. If some people are right, you may even be using the box to go to school,
because why bother traveling miles to get an education.
Unfortunately, the world is getting increasingly overpopulated, which is why every
house will be fitted with a picture window. Rather like a giant television screen,
youll be able to choose the view you wish to have and the internet will be directly
to your house. Imagine, you and your friends will be having beach parties on Bali,
enjoying romantic sunsets in Paris, and getting ready to go out in New York.
Perhaps most importantly is the house of the future will be intelligent. Instead of
using gas, use solar light, and in the basement of every house therell be a special
recycling plant that will help us look after the environment much more effectively
that at present. And as for housework, well , what are robots for, Image no more
having to tidy your room or make your bed because you have a robot to do it for
you, after all youll want to get a good job so that you can afford one of the cars
of the future.
The technology is changing the style of life to a new dimension of comfort.
Through of the domotic, this group of technics to automatic buildings. From Intel
208
tell us to teknautes the last and a lot of options that we use from the construction.
The packages of software can transform the design and the construction.
The software will code for the construction, building and plan to create an ideal
home. Through this function could create an itinerary of tubing, electricity,
calefaction and ventilation.
We could replace doors or windows to enjoy more light or change the switches
form the likes of the customer. When it is organized to press print and the pieces
of wood they will cut in automatic way using Computer numerical control.
About the design of the house since Tokyo with the celebration of 2020 Olympic
Games will be introduced a future house, a housing 100% online.

There are many different ways of travelling from place to place. People usually
travel by car, train, airplane or ship, but in some countries of the world there are
some unusual means of transport.
On your Bike
213
The cycle-rickshaw is a popular means of transport in small towns and villages in
India and other parts of Asia. People sit in the back while a man on a bicycle at
the front pulls them along. In some towns in India, children go to school by cycle-
rickshaw because it is slow and safe and not crowded like the buses.Cycle-
rickshaws are comfortable and cheap, too.
Taxi!
In Thailand, people often travel by taxi. However, the taxis there are very unusual.
They are elephant taxis, and people travel around on the back of an elephant.
The elephants go to a training camp where they learn how to carry passengers
safely. The elephants also learn not to be scared in noisy places. A ride on an
elephant taxi is not very comfortable, though, because it is very bumpy.
Snow problem
In countries where there is a lot of snow, such as Greenland and Canada, people
use dog-sledges to get around. Dog-sledges are the best way to travel across the
ice and snow. A team of four dogs pulls the sledge or stand at the back for a ride.
It is not very comfortable, but it is fun!

TEMAS: Reading 14: What I remember about the sixties (grupo control/experimental)

The sixties will forever be remembered as the decade that shaped the future. The
first half of the twentieth century was dominated by wars and politics that seemed
to be a continuation of the previous century, and then suddenly the sixties arrived,
a cultural earthquake that may never be repeated. We talked to several children
218
of the sixties and asked them what they remember most about that most turbulent
of decades.
Geena Shackleton: I think the thing I remember most is the differences it made
for women today are used to thinking that they should have careers and that their
husbands should help in the house, but it didnt use to be like that. Before the
sixties, women were second class citizens; for example, I earned more money
than my husband, but I used to have to ask if I could withdraw my money from
our bank account. Of course, it wasnt just in the world of work where things
changed, there were also big changes in fashion like the mini skirt and girls could
suddenly go wild in nightclubs and at concerts. I suppose it started with Elvis in
the fifties, but by the time The Beatles arrived you couldnt even hear them play
because of all the girls screaming.
Will Hooker: The sixties will always stick in my mind as a decade of great political
change. Before the sixties, blacks in America used to be treated worse than white
people. Buses, cafes, and schools were all segregated, but then the civil rights
movement became powerful and the laws were eventually changed. I will never
forget when Martin Luther King Jr. and JFK were assassinated, but it was the
decade when young people started to have their own voice in politics. Before the
sixties, people used to obey the government one hundred percent, but in the
sixties they suddenly started objecting to things a lot of more. For example, you
had the hippies protesting against the war in Vietnam, and in 1968 in Paris the
students almost defeated the government. Change was so quick in those days:
youd just got used to one thing, and then everything changed and you had to get
used to something else. Young people really believed that they could change the
world.
Deedee Wills: The thing I remember most about the sixties are all the inventions
nearly every week. There always used to be advertisements on TV showing us
the latest invention and telling us how it was going to change our lives forever; I
mean, people used to believe that by the year 2000 people wouldnt have to work
and everything would be done by robots. I suppose that even though that didnt
come true, there were some pretty fantastic achievements: I will never forget
seeing Neil Armstrong on the moon for the first time and hearing him say that it
219
was a giant step for mankind. Kids used to play moonwalking on the street,
taking big, slow jumps like they were walking on the moon. The seventies took
away a lot of that optimism, but I will always be glad I was part of sixties.
Andrew Ridgeley: I dont think you can talk about the sixties without talking about
the music. I mean, look at all the great bands who started in the sixties: The
Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Doors, Bob Dylan, the list is endless.
I remember I used to work weekends in a grocery stores and Id spend all my
wages on records. My friends and I would go to nightclubs every Friday and
Saturday night and it was always brilliant; everybody there wanted to have a good
time, so there never used to be any flights. Also, the girls in the sixties were
fantastic. I mean, I still remember the first time I saw my wife, she was wearing a
mini skirt and I thought she was the most beautiful girl Id ever seen. We used to
copy British fashion because of the Beatles; everybody had a mop-top haircut.
But then it started changing in the late sixties because of the hippies and the
peace movement: we were used to seeing men with longer hair than the women!
I really dont think the sixties will ever be repeated, it was just a totally unique
decade.
