Course Description:

This course enables students to deepen their understanding of chemistry through the
study of organic chemistry, the structure and properties of matter, energy changes and rates of
reaction, equilibrium in chemical systems, and electrochemistry. Students will further develop
their problem-solving and investigation skills as they investigate chemical
processes, and will refine their ability to communicate scientific information. Emphasis
will be placed on the importance of chemistry in everyday life and on evaluating the
impact of chemical technology on the environment.

How this course supports expectations for the Catholic School Graduate:

This course seeks to further the achievement of Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations through
integrating Scripture, Catholic Church teaching, and moral and ethical reflection. Students are
encouraged to become discerning believers who integrate faith with life. Students develop their
decision-making skills and critically reflect on the spiritual, moral, and ethical dimensions of issues
addressed in this course. They use and integrate the Catholic faith tradition in the critical analysis of
chemistry in everyday life and evaluate the impact of chemical technology on the environment. As
informed Catholic citizens, students acknowledge and accept their responsibility as stewards of the
earth and use their knowledge to address pressing environmental issues.

DESK (FACEDOWN or TURNED OFF)
2. ENTER THE ROOM QUIETLY AND BE SEATED BEFORE THE BELL RINGS. YOU
HAVE 5 MINUTES TO GET READY BEFORE CLASS BEGINS.
3. RAISE YOUR HAND IF YOU WANT TO ASK A QUESTION OR NEED HELP.
4. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS THE FIRST TIME THEY ARE GIVEN.
5. WORK QUETLY WHEN COMPLETING SEAT WORK.
6. ALWAYS REMAIN QUIET WHEN SOMEONE IS SPEAKING.

Materials:
Every student must bring the following materials to class each day: Notebook, pencil, pen,
lined loose-Ieaf paper, scientific calculator, ruler, and pen. A scientific calculator is
mandatory. You should have your materials by tomorrow.

I WILL NOT SUPPLY ANY COURSE MATERIALS AT ANYTIME DURING THE
SEMESTER. SO COME PREPARED.

Homework:
All homework assignments are to be completed and brought to the next class. Homework
checks will be done on a regular basis. It is to your advantage that you complete all of your
homework on time. If you are away, it is your responsibility to get any lecture notes and
homework assignments that you have missed from your friends in the class.

Tests and Quizzes:

Students will be advised 1 week prior to all tests and their content. Students who are away on
test dates must bring a doctor's note and a note from a parent acknowledging his/her
awareness that a test has been missed, due to illness. In addition, if you are away on a
school trip or function you must check my website for upcoming test dates and assignment
due dates.

Missed Assignments and Laboratories:

When a student fails to hand in an assignment or laboratory report without a note from their
parent by the due date, they will be given a late contract. Students who fail to submit the
assessment by the second due date will be given a zero.

Missed Tests:
Students who have a valid reason for being away on the day of a test will be given an
opportunity to re-write their test on a date that will be determined by their teacher. Students
who are truant will re-write their test within a month of the original test date. The date will be
determined by their teacher.

Reviews:
Unit and exam reviews will not be provided during the course. You will be assessed and
evaluated on all of the material covered during each unit and the final exam, unless told
otherwise by your instructor.

Lab Partners and Seating Plan:

I will assign lab partners at the beginning of the year. You are expected to work with the same
lab partner for the entire semester. I am willing to let you chose your seats HOWEVER, as
soon as this becomes a distraction, then I will be making a seating plan.
