AN ARCHAIC BRONZE RITUAL FOOD

EARLY WESTERN ZHOU DYNASTY
the swelling body rising to an everted rim all above a tall splayed
foot, the sloping shoulder cast with a band of stylized kuilong against
a leiwen ground in low relief, two bovine heads emerging in high relief
from the center of the band at opposite sides of the vessel, a narrow
band of circles below, the surface otherwise unadorned apart from
two narrow string-relief bands encircling the foot, the vessel flanked
by a pair of loop handles issuing from bovine masks with upturned
snouts, the interior inscribed with a later-added pictogram, the
patina mottled green and gray with malachite encrustations

of yuhuchun form, rising from a splayed foot to a pear-shaped body
and a flared rim, painted all around in vibrant cobalt blue tones with
two animated four-clawed dragons striding amidst cloud scrolls in
pursuit of a Flaming Pearl above a tumultuous sea, the foot with
five soaring bats (wufu) between underglaze-blue lines, the base
glazed white

standing on a lotus supported on the back of a crouching Buddhist
lion, the goddesss forearms extended forward, the left hand held
flat and rotated with the palm upturned, forefinger of the right hand
pointing ahead and the other fingers curled under, the robe and
shawl clinging to the bodys contours in rhythmic folds, a multi-
stranded necklace laying against the exposed chest, the hair pulled
into a high chignon under the shawl, a curling diadem crowning the
head, the recumbent lion looking upward with bulging eyes and
exposed fangs all framed by a curling mane (3)

QING DYNASTY, KANGXI PERIOD,
DATED JISI YEAR, CORRESPONDING
TO 1689
comprising two five-panel screens carved to each side with
continuous compositions, one side with a scene of the Qunxian
zhushou (the Immortals offering birthday congratulations to the
Queen Mother of the West) on Mount Kunlun, Xiwangmu arriving
from the left on a phoenix shrouded in a billowing cloud ferrying
her attendants, the peaks of her celestial palace emerging from the
clouds behind her, Shoulao sitting at the upper center in a rocky
grotto with attendants and the flora and fauna of immortality, the
Eight Daoist Immortals and other celebrants traversing mountains
and waters from all directions on foot, on animals, on clouds, and
by other means, the scene enclosed by a band of alternating wanzi-
filled lozenges and roundels with cranes or shou characters, a four-
clawed dragon pursuing a Flaming Pearl at each end of the screen,
a border of flowers above and a border of mythical beasts below, the
reverse with gilt inscriptions honoring the birthday of a high official
named Wang, surrounded by a red and gilt keyfret band, a wide
border painted with the Hundred Antiques, and an outer border of
scrolling lotus painted in gilt polychrome, all against a black lacquer
ground, a red-lacquer apron between the feet (2)
