Arthritis symptoms: Diet can impact rheumatoid arthritis

People suffering with rheumatoid arthritis often experience periods where the symptoms are
worse - which can be difficult to predict.

Experts have suggested diet could play a major role in the treatment of arthritis.

Some people with rheumatoid arthritis also experience problems in other parts of the body, or
more general symptoms such as tiredness and weight loss.

Cassandra Barns, nutritionist has listed the top foods that arthritis sufferers should be avoiding.

Red meat

Red meats contain relatively high levels of an omega-6 fatty acid called arachidonic acid, which
can convert to pro-inflammatory substances in the body and may exacerbate pain and
inflammation.

A small quantity of good quality red meat can be beneficial, supplying good levels of nutrients
such as iron; however, those with arthritis may benefit from sticking to one or two servings per
week.

Replace red meat with oily fish for the omega-3 fatty acids - but if you this is a struggle people
can try Quest Nutra Pharma Super Omega 3-6-9.
Another alternative to red meat can also be good quality organic white meats, such as chicken.

Fried foods

Try to avoid fried foods, particularly those fried in vegetable oils. Vegetable oils are high in
omega-6 fatty acids, which in high levels can convert to pro-inflammatory substances in the
body, and also become rancid when heated to high temperatures.

Fry or roast food in oil only occasionally. Coconut oil can be a much better alternative: as it is
mainly composed of saturated fats, it does not spoil at high temperatures, while still providing a
healthier alternative to butter and other animal fats.

De-odorised coconut oils are also available for cooking if you want to avoid the coconut flavour or
smell.

Arthritis symptoms: Coffee should be avoided

Rheumatoid arthritis sufferers should avoid certain foods
Coffee

Coffee can contribute to increased acidity of the blood, which can exacerbate any inflammation.

Decaffeinated coffee is not a good alternative as it still contains substances that can be
detrimental to the body. Opt for green tea and herbal tea instead.

Fizzy drinks and sugary foods

Like coffee, the likes of fizzy drinks and sugary foods can increase the acidity of the
blood, exacerbating inflammation.

The best drinks to have include pure water, herbal teas and fruit juice, when diluted half and half
with water, but avoid orange juice, as this can be very acidic.
If youre struggling to control your sugar cravings, Quest Nutra Pharmas Ecquigluco can help
stabilise blood glucose levels.

High levels of wheat and dairy foods

Food allergies or intolerances may be a common contributor to inflammation, as they occur when
the individuals immune system reacts abnormally to a substance in a food.

Symptoms can include exacerbation of joint pain, and may be a particular issue for those with
rheumatoid arthritis.

Intolerances to wheat in particular may be particularly common, and some individuals find that
finding alternatives to wheat and wheat-based foods can have a beneficial effect on inflammation
and pain.

Intolerances to dairy foods especially that from cows milk can also be common.

Dairy products also contain arachidonic acid, which, as mentioned above, can convert to pro-
inflammatory substances. Many alternatives to dairy milk are now available, including oat milk,
coconut-based milk and nut milks such as almond and hazelnut.

Nightshade family vegetables

These veggies may exacerbate pain and inflammation for some people with arthritis.

The nightshade family includes tomatoes, white potatoes, aubergine and peppers.

Most other vegetables are beneficial and should be the main part of most meals.

This comes after a Swedish study has suggested certain jobs can increase the risk of rheumatoid
arthritis - for men bricklayers, concrete workers and electricians had twice the risk and for
women, nursing jobs carried a 30 per cent higher risk.

Arthritis is an inflammatory condition.

HIGHLIGHTS

1. Arthritis is an inflammatory condition that can affect one or more joints

2. It remains largely 'invisible' as the symptoms cannot be seen
3. Creating awareness about the ailment can help tackle these problems

Arthritis is an inflammatory condition that can affect one or more joints. It eventually
leads to a lot of joint pain and stiffness and tends to worsen with age. Arthritis occurs
when the cartilage tissue that protects the bones and joints, by absorbing the
pressure and shock created during movement, is damaged or reduced. This may
happen due to normal wear and tear, an infection or even an injury. According to the
World Health Organisation, the prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis varies between
0.3% and 1% and is more common in women and in developed countries. Recently,
the Arthritis Research UK announced the launch of a campaign to highlight the
impact of the debilitating condition on the society which affects at least 10 million
people in the United Kingdom. The charity has warned that many people are
suffering in silence with this ailment and may not be getting adequate support that
they need.

Their latest report indicates arthritis remains largely 'invisible' from the public as the
symptoms cannot be physically seen. Moreover, there has also been a stigma
attached to the condition that it is an 'old person's disease' but it is not true as
arthritis can affect people of all ages. While building more awareness about the
ailment can help in tackling these problems, here's some more help. We know that
our diet plays an important role in maintaining our overall health. Here are four foods
that you must avoid if you are suffering from arthritis as they may trigger
inflammatory responses and make the condition worse
1. Sugar and sugary beverages: According to American Journal of Clinical
Nutrition, sugary beverages may facilitate the release of inflammatory agents called
cytokines.

2. Vegetables like tomatoes and potatoes: Certain foods are rich in an alkaloid
called solanine that may trigger arthritic pain. Consumption of such food items may
also lead to calcium deposition in tissues.

3. Purine-rich foods: A diet rich in purines is known to elevate uric acid levels in
the body. Excess uric acid has the tendency to get deposited in the tissues and
joints. You must watch your intake of beer, organ meats, sweetbreads, bacon, pork,
beef, lamb and meats and seafood.

4. Certain fats and vegetable oils: Hydrogenated trans-fats and certain vegetable
oils like safflower, sunflower, corn and soybean oil can also cause some joint issues.
These simple tips can help in managing the symptoms of arthritis like pain and
inflammation.

Foods that trigger joint pain

Arthritis is a general term where people have severe joint pain and inflammation. If your joints swell
or stiffen they can cause a lot of pain. Dairy products can lead to join pain due to the proteins they
contain. Some sufferers of joint pain switch to vegan diet in order to avoid the pain. People who
smoke are at a high risk of developing arthritis whereas people who take alcohol have a high risk of
developing gout. In general, experts advise a balanced diet and a healthy body weight for joint pain.
Eating these foods could be a major reason that your joints pain.

Avoiding fats and oil: Fats though are necessary for a healthy eating plan but may affect the health
of overall body. Fats like meat, beef cheese, butter can increase the cholesterol level and will be
harmful. Saturated fats can increase the cholesterol level and can make the joint pain worse. Burgers,
chicken, sausages, ice-creams and other deserts should be removed from the diet.

Processed Foods: Avoid eating canned and processed food and also include fresh fruits and
vegetables in your diet plan. Apart from this, frozen food, fried meat and sea food should not be

High blood pressure: DASH diet could also prevent gout

The DASH diet, which stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, is said to be able
to lower their blood pressure reading in two weeks, experts have claimed, but yields better
results in the long term.
But now experts have also said following the diet could reduce the risk of gout.

A study, led by Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) looked at 25 years of data and found
there was a lower incidence of gout in men who followed a diet similar to the DASH diet.

Rates were higher among men who ate a more typical Western diet.

"The current dietary recommendation for gout care is a diet low in purines, which are found in

challenging for many patients," said Hyon Choi, director of the Gout and Crystal Arthropathy
Centre in the MGH Division of Rheumatology, Allergy, and Immunology and senior author of the
report.

"This kind of low-protein diet may also promote increased consumption of refined carbohydrates
and unhealthy fats - including trans fats - that can worsen cardiovascular and metabolic problems
common in gout patients."

The DASH diet includes vegetables, fruits and low-fat dairy products and vegetable oil.

It also consists of wholegrains, fish, poultry, nuts and beans.

People on the diet should be limiting food high in saturated fat, full fat dairy products and tropical
oils including coconut oil and palm oil, and stopping eating sugar-sweetened food and drinks.

The diet is designed to be balanced.

Gout, which is a form of arthritis, results from an excess of uric acid in the blood and tissues of
the body, which if present for long enough, can form into needle-like crystals which can inflame
your joints and cause severe pain and swelling.

Everyone has uric acid in the blood.

However, most people with gout have high levels of uric acid in their body because it hasnt been
efficiently removed by the kidneys and washed out in the urine.

Experts argue gout can only be effectively battled with long-term treatment including prescribed
medications that lower the level of uric acid in blood.

Research has also revealed alcohol can increase the risk of getting gout - nutritionists suggest
people who have gout should cut beer out of their diet.

The British Society for Rheumatology has published guidelines on how to treat patients with gout.

Avoid these foods if you have joint pain

Our diet can have a large influence on how we

feel. Certain foods can upset our stomachs, others affect our mood, and some can make our joint
pain worse. Some foods work to reduce inflammation, bringing you some relief from your joint
pain. On the other hand, others trigger inflammation and will cause your joints to hurt more.
Knowing which foods to avoid can help you get better control of your joint pain.

Food to avoid if you have joint pain

Fats and oils: Some fats and oils are actually healthy for us and can improve health while others
do the complete opposite. Fats found in meat, cheese, and butter increase cholesterol, which can
worsen joint pain. These unhealthy fats and oils can also be found in processed goods and many
desserts.
Processed food: Canned and processed food can make joint pain worse, whereas whole foods
like fruits, vegetables, and lean meats work to improve joint pain.
Sugar: Consuming high amounts of sugar can increase inflammation. Avoid candies, flours,
baked goods, and sodas. Instead, opt for natural sugar like the ones found in fruit.
Dairy: For some, dairy triggers inflammation, making it another food category that can worsen
joint pain.
Advanced glycation end (AGEs) product foods: AGE is a toxin that occurs in foods that are grilled,
fried, pasteurized, or heated. AGEs can damage certain proteins in the body, so in retaliation, the
body tries to break down AGEs.
Unfortunately, when this occurs, it triggers an inflammatory response that leads to joint pain.

Alcohol and tobacco: These can contribute to a slew of health problems, so its no surprise that
they should be avoided by those with joint pain. Smokers generally have a higher risk
of rheumatoid arthritis compared to non-smokers, and drinkers have a higher risk of
developing gout. Cut out the smoking and either limit or completely cut out alcohol if you want
your joints to feel good.
Salt and preservatives: Excess salt and preservatives are often used so food items can stay on
the shelf longer. Unfortunately, these ingredients cause you more pain. Reducing your intake of
salt and preservatives is a good way to reduce joint pain.
Corn oil: This oil specifically triggers inflammation in the body. It is often found in baked goods
and snacks. On the other hand, the properties in fish oil can relieve joint pain.
If youre tired of taking pills for your joint pain, start healing your body from within by consuming
a diet that reduces inflammation rather than triggering it.

reduce joint pain.
Herbs and spices: Many herbs and spices you use daily to flavor your food also contain anti-
inflammatory properties which work with the body to reduce inflammation.
