INTRODUCTION
This course guideline is prepared to assist students to fully understand the requirements and content of
the course. Students are advised to read each of these sections carefully. Students will also need to
ensure that they are able to follow all the items suggested to enable them to revise this course effectively.

BIU2012 English Proficiency 1 in general aims to provide students a basis for the enhancement of
English language proficiency among the students.

TARGET GROUP
This course is offered to all Diploma Programs students in UPSI. However, this module is written
specifically for Long Distance Learning Program (PJJ) students.

ALLOCATIONS OF LEARNING TIME


According to UPSI and MQA standards, each credit hour requires students to allocate 28 hours of
learning time. The estimation of learning time for this course is stated in the table below:

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOME

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

1. Construct simple English structures. (C3)


2. Use various language forms and functions in practical situations for listening and speaking tasks.

3. Communicate effectively in writing and speaking using simple English structures. (C3)
4. Role-play in groups based on given situations with fluency and accuracy. (TS1)

COURSE SYNOPSIS
This is a basic course intended for students who have limited knowledge in English grammar and
proficiency. It emphasises the essential knowledge of English language structures which students need
to use in various situations integrated with other language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Please take note on the coursework that will be given to you to get a clear understanding in completing
the coursework.

There are 4 (four) types of coursework in this course, which are:

Group The theme for the mini sketch is TEAMWORK. 20 marks (Week 11)
Assignment Students need to form groups of 4-5 people. The
length of the mini sketch should be between 5-7
minutes only. The students need to record their mini
sketch and upload the video in the Assignment
platform.
Online 1 (one) online test (in MyGuru3) which consists of 20 marks (Week 10)
Assessment I grammar items (20 questions) will be created, and (1 question
students need to answer the test online within 1 hour. = 1 mark)

Online 2 (two) recordings of a short text will be played (in 10 marks (Week 12)
Assessment II MyGuru3), and students need to answer 10 MCQ (1 question
questions based on the texts heard. = 1 mark)
E-Forum E-Learning tutors will upload questions for the writing 10 marks (Week 13)
activity in MyGuru3. Read the notes and examples
uploaded in MyGuru3. After that, practice and ask
questions to the tutor. After the students have showed
their understanding of the skill taught, the tutor will
upload a stimulus (photo/diagram/topic), and students
are required to write a paragraph based on the
stimulus. Students need to write their essays, and
submit them in MyGuru3 within the given time. The
students essays will be evaluated by the tutor.
