Editors Column
The United States is experiencing some rough times right now. There is tremendous
political discord which is resulting in a lot of mud-slinging and frustration at all
levels of government and between and among the major parties. We are facing a
crisis of major proportion with the situation of possible nuclear confrontation with
the rogue regime running North Korea. And then we get bombarded with Hurricane
Harveys epic and tragic destruction of the southeastern portion of Texas, entailing a
large number of lost lives and untold billions of dollars of damage to homes,
businesses and infrastructure in Texas. And to top this off, there are numerous and
massive wildfires here in the West which are straining firefighting resources and
governmental finances.
But what is the one constant that serves to take our mind away from all this misery
and gives us a period of respite within which we can re-charge our emotions and re-
gain the mental strength that will help us as Americans to endure these difficult
times? It is the World of Sports! Yeah, North Korea is scary, but did you see the
diving stop that Crawford made to save two runs? Did you see that 50 foot putt that
Jordan Spieth made to win the Open Championship? What about the Niners? Will
the new GM and head coach help bring back this storied franchise? We cant wait for
the Warriors to tee it up for 17-18 season. Yeah, sports really dont affect the World
Order, but it sure makes it easier to get a break from all the misery. Irritated with
your government? Scared about North Korea? Afraid about natural disasters? Give
yourself a boost---watch or play a game. That is what recreation is all about.

Kathys Fund----Old Timers vs Alzheimers
Guys, Kathys Fund remains up and running. This battle against Alzheimers goes on
and so does the amazing generosity of the Old Timers. At the August dinner, we
collected $91 in cash along with a generous check for $25 from Skip DelSarto, our
donations now totaling $2310 just since we started this campaign in August 2016.
Each and every dollar we send off to the Alzheimers Association will make a
difference. To all you contributors, the Alzheimers Association sends its
appreciation.

We Need a Recruitment Drive---Repeat Announcement
Honorable Fellow Old Timers, you all know the stark fact that we aint getting any
younger! We need to make a concerted effort to bring in some new members so that
we can keep the traditions of our great organization alive and running for many,
many years to come. So, the SFBOTA is encouraging all you members to start

2
recruiting friends, relatives, friends of relatives or relatives of friends to join our
fabled group. We are a living history book, but we run the risk of running out of
pages. Lets make sure this doesnt happen on our watch!!
A Disturbing Trend Among the Membership
It has come to the attention of the Executive Board and Board of Directors that a
significant number of members on the active roster are delinquent in the payment of
their 2017 dues. Letters are being mailed to those members in arrears providing
them with an opportunity to bring their status up to date or suffer the loss of their
membership in this storied organization. Cmon, Guys! Stay with us!
Golf News
We have two events in September, and they are both fan favorites. On Monday, 9/11
at 9:00 AM, the first group goes off at San Jose Muni, Two weeks later, on Monday
9/25, there will be an 8:00 AM shotgun start at Peacock Gap in San Rafael. Get your
reservations in to Commissioner Rich Ford!
***Special Note: The Peacock Gap event is the first of the final 3 outings that will
decide the Club Championship. The others are at Sunnyvale on 10/16 and Santa
Teresa on 11/6, both of which are fun and fair golf courses.

Words of Wisdom
America is the only country where a significant proportion of the population
believes that professional wrestling is real but the moon landing was faked.
---David Letterman---
On the Mend
It always makes your news staff very unhappy to report Members who are on the DL
each month. This months list: Bob Martinez, Charlie Silvera, Clarence Grider, Don
Collopy, Jerry Big Sully Sullivan, Gerry DeRyan, Larry Nissim, Lou DeSalvatore and

3
a recent addition to this group, long-time Old Timer Bill McCullough. Lets get all
these guys back on the field.
Director Bill Angel is still battling a serious illness. Bill and I are old teammates and
I know how tough a guy and competitor Billy is. He will battle hard. My money is on
him.
Continuing on this list is Jim Dowd, who continues making progress in his comeback
from a serious illness. Friends who would like to visit Jim are reminded to call first
to make sure he is up to receiving well-wishers, and count on seeing him after 1:00
PM.
A continuing reminder: Jim Perry remains on the DL at Laguna Honda Home. Jim is
brightened up by cards and letters addressed to him at Laguna Honda Home, 375
Laguna Honda Blvd, Building 1 North, Room 133A, San Francisco, Calif. 94116. Jim
really appreciates the devoted support of the SFBOTA.

Vintage Bobbie Mitchell

Here is a little known fact. At one time Bobbie Mitchell entertained thoughts of
becoming a police officer, so he signed up to take the test for the job. Bobbie got his
assigned date and showed up bright and early, and at the appointed time he took his
seat and began the examination. About a half hour into the test, the guy sitting next
to Bob, whom Bob had never seen before or since, leaned over and whispered Hey
Man, Question No. 53---Old McDonald had a What?
Bobbie incredulously looked at this guy and whispered Farm, Man! Old McDonald
had a Farm! Then the guy asked Bobbie How do you spell Farm? Bobbie swelled
up with pride and said E-I-E-I-O! Bobbie and the other guy never made it to the
Police Department.
We Need Some More Laughs This Month
---An Old Timer bought his wife a piano for her birthday. A few weeks later one of his
buddies asked him how his wife was doing with the piano. The Old Timer said I
persuaded her to switch to a clarinet. Why? asked his friend. Old Timer answered
Because with a clarinet in her mouth, she cant sing.
---A future Old Timer was driving with his new wife to their honeymoon in Santa
Barbara, when he put his hand on his wifes knee. She started giggling and said You
can go farther than that. So he drove to Los Angeles.
