Answer three of the following four questions

All questions carry equal marks

This is an open book exam

Exam duration : 3 hours
Question 1

A 406 x 178 UB 74 spanning 7.2m is required to carry a dead load of 20 kN/m and a
live load of 42 kN/m. On inspection it is found that the beam is inadequate. The
contractor suggests welding a plate to the upper and lower flanges to form a
compound beam. As the structural engineer you are required to select a suitable size
of plate to provide the necessary capacity.

Your design check is to include:

1. Suitability of the plates

2. Cut off position of the plates (theoretical and actual)

3. Shear capacity

4. Deflection (brittle finish)

Assume a self weight of 3.5 kN/m

The beam is fully restrained along its length

Grade S275 steel throughout

Youngs Modulus E = 210 kN/mm2
Strength of 6mm fillet weld = 0.92 kN/mm
Deflection for a UDL = 5wL4/384 EI

Question 2
The outline of a concrete retaining wall is shown in Figure 2. The extent of the base is
restricted to within 1.0m of an existing building.
You are required to:
1. Select a size of retaining wall
2. Check wall for sliding
3. Check suitability due to overturning
4. Determine pressures under the base
5. Design bending reinforcement for the base and wall
Density of soil = 16.0 kN/m3
Angle of internal friction = 350
Surcharge = 7.5 kN/m2
Coefficient of friction = 0.5
Allowable bearing pressure = 100 kN/m2
Fy = 460 N/mm2
Concrete grade 40N20
Assume a cover of 40mm

Question 3
Design a solid block laterally loaded boundary wall for a wind load of 0.7 kN/m2. The
block is laid on the flat. The wall is 1.8m high and 27.0m long. An initial design
shows that it is not capable of acting as a cantilever.

Mortar designation (iii)

Compressive strength of block = 10N/mm2
Moisture content 7% to 12%
Density of block = 22.0 kN/m3

Question 4
Figure 4 shows a concrete column 8.0m in length. The column is slender about both
axes. It is fixed top and bottom about the y-y axis (condition 1 at both ends) and free
to rotate about the x-x axis (condition 3 at both ends). It is braced against lateral load.
The column is subject to the design (ultimate) bending moments indicated about the
y-y axis. The column is also subject to a design load of 2750 kN.
You are required to:
1. Select a cross-section to show that the column is slender about both axes
2. Design the longitudinal reinforcement to take the design load and bending
moments

Fy = 460 N/mm2
Concrete grade 40N20
Assume a cover of 40mm
