THINGS TO REMEMBER
Quick Facts
What are numbers and their types?
Positive integers, other than 1, which have exactly two
factors, are known as prime numbers.
LCM
HCF
Even numbers ( , 4, 2, 0, 2, 4, )
Odd numbers ( , 5, 3, 1, 1, 3, 5, )
If one integer is even and the other is odd, their sum and
difference are odd.
TRICKS WITH NUMBERS
Example
Operation Result
(red is odd, blue is even)
Even + Even Even 2+4=6
Even + Odd Odd 6+3=9
Odd + Even Odd 5 + 12 = 17
Odd + Odd Even 3+5=8
The same rule is valid for subtraction.

Even x Even Even 2x4=6
Even x Odd Even 6 x 3 = 18
Odd x Even Even 5 x 12 = 60
Odd x Odd Odd 3 x 5 = 15
This thing can be used for saving precious time.
THE PEMDAS RULE
When an equation involves more than one operation, it is
important to carry them out in the correct order. The correct
order is Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division,
Addition and Subtraction, or just remember the first letters
PEMDAS to remember the proper order.

If 10 eggs cost 120 rupees, what will the cost of two dozen
eggs?
EGGS COST EGGS COST
10 120 10 120
24 x 24 x
This is an example of direct proportion in which INCREASE in one
thing INCREASES the value of other thing.
RATIO AND PROPORTION
15 men are building a house. They require 12 days to
build it. If the number of men are increased to 30, then
how many days will be required to build the house?
Men Days Men Days Men Days
15 12 15 12 15
30 x 30 x 30
RATIO AND PROPORTION
If A:B = 5:3 and B:C = 9:7 then A:B:C=? (GAT Test October 2013)
A : B : C
5 : 3
9 : 7
A : B : C A : B : C
5 : 3 15 : 9
9 : 7 9 : 7
PROBABILITY
How likely something is to happen. It just tells
us the chance of any happening.

There are 5 marbles in a bag: 4 are blue, and 1 is red. What

is the probability that a blue marble will be picked?
Number of ways it can happen: 4 (there are 4 blues)
Total number of outcomes: 5 (there are 5 marbles in total)
SPEED DISTANCE PROBLEMS
There are three components of Speed distance problems:
1. Speed or velocity (v)
2. Distance or Length (S)
3. Time (t)
SPEED DISTANCE PROBLEMS

1. A runner was running for two hours with a speed of 8

km/h? How much distance he covered?
2. A train passes through a pole in 20 seconds with a speed
of 60 km/h. What is the length of train?
3. A car has to cover a distance of 120 km in 90 minutes.
What should be the speed of car?
4. If a man running at 15kmph passed a bridge in 9 seconds,
what is the length of the bridge?
MEAN
The mean average is not always a whole number.
The mean is the total of the numbers divided by how many
numbers there are.
To work out the mean:
1. Add up all the numbers.
7 + 9 + 11 + 6 + 13 + 6 + 6 + 3 + 11 = 72
2. Divide the answer by how many numbers there are.
There are 9 numbers.
72 9 = 8
So the mean value is 8.
MODE
The mode is the value that appears the most.
Question: What is the mode of: 7 9 11 6 13 6 6 3 11
To work out the mode:
1. Put the numbers in order:
3 6 6 6 7 9 11 11 13
2. Look for the number that appears the most.

6 appears more than any other number.

So the mode value is 6.

MEDIAN (ODD)
The median is the middle value.
If the number of figures are odd then
Question: What is the mode of: 7 9 11 6 13 6 6 3 11
To work out the median:
1. Put the numbers in order:
3 6 6 6 7 9 11 11 13
2. The number in the middle of the list is the median.

So the median value is 7.

MEDIAN (EVEN)
The median is the middle value.
If there are two middle values, the median is then taking the
average of those two numbers.
If the number of figures are even then
Question: Find the median of: 3 6 6 6 7 8 9 11 11 13
3 6 6 6 7 8 9 11 11 13
There are two middle values, 7 and 8.
The median is halfway between 7 and 8, so the median is
(7+8)/2=7.5
AVERAGE OF SERIES
Question: What is the average of first 30 values. i.e.
average of 1,2,3,,30?
ITS SO EASY
Simply, use this.
AVERAGE OF SERIES (QUESTIONS)
1) Find the average of the first 30 consecutive
positive numbers.
2) Find the average of the first 63 consecutive
positive numbers.
3) Find the average from 3, 4, 5, ., 91.
4) Find the average of 2, 4, 6, , 308.
5) Find the average of the first 345 consecutive
positive numbers.
AREA OF CIRCLE
You must remember the formula.
Area of circle = pi r 2

Question: If diameter of a circle is 14 cm, find its

area.
CIRCUMFERENCE OF A CIRCLE
You must remember the formula.
Circumference of circle = 2 pi r

Question: The radius of a circular path is 49 m.

What is the total length of the path?
CIRCUMFERENCE OF A CIRCLE

You know:
Area of circle = pi r2
Circumference: 2 pi r
Radius (r) = Diameter / 2
Pi = 3.14
Pi = 22/7
SQUARE (AREA)
You must remember the formula.
Area = L X L L

Question: If the length of one side L L

of a square is 4 cm, what is the
area? L
SQUARE (PERIMETER)
The perimeter is the total distance. around the outside of
a 2D shape. You. calculate it by adding together all the.
lengths of a shape.
Perimeter: L + L + L + L OR Perimeter: 4 x L L
Question: Block-A park is in square
shape. The area of square is 400m .2 L L
Find the perimeter?
Hint: Area = L x L L
RECTANGLE (AREA)
You must remember the formula.
Area = L X W L
Question: If the length and width
W
of a rectangle is 6 cm and 3 cm
respectively, what is the area of
that rectangle?

PERCENTAGE
REMEMBER:
What is 30% of 400? is means =
of means X
Govt. increased pays of servants by 15%. If the pay
was Rs. 18,000. What is the current pay?

Try to find the answer!!!

THERE ARE TWO WAYS
1. One is by doing as the hint was given on previous slide.
Solution:
= Rs. 18,000 x 115% = Rs. 18,000 x 115/100 = Rs. 18,000 x 1.15
= Rs. 20,700
2. The other way is to find the increase in salary.
i.e. 15% 0f Rs. 18,000 i.e. Rs. 2,700
Then add this increase in the original salary, you will get the new salary of
that employee.
PERCENTAGE (Question)
A shop offered 20% reduced price for all of its electronic
items. Abdul Rehman bought a mobile phone for Rs. 4,000
from there. What was the original tag price of that mobile?
a. 4,800
b. 5,400
c. 5,000
d. 5,200
PERCENTAGE (Zakat, Ushar)
Similarly, you can use the concept of Percentage in finding
the zakat and ushar of any value/thing.

Zakat @ 2.50 % (sahib-e-nisab person)

Ushar @ 10% (irrigated by natural means like rain,
streams and river water)
Ushar @ 5% (irrigated by artificial means)
ANGLES OF TRIANGLE
Remember: The sum of all the angles of right angle are 180o
Question: The angles of a triangle are in the ratio
of 3:5:7, then find the value of biggest angle.
Just sum the ratios: 3:5:7 and it comes with 3+5+7=15
You know, total angles are 180o and the share of one unit can be
found by 180o/15=120
The largest angle is then 7 x 120 = 840
WORK SHARE
Hint: Amount of Work/Time
Question: A can do a piece of work in 4 hours; B and C
together can do it in 3 hours, while A and C together can do it
in 2 hours. How long will B alone take to do it?
WORK SHARE
Remember: Amount of Work/Time
Solution
A=1/4
B+C=1/3
A+C=1/2
C=1/2-1/4=1/4
B=1/3-1/4=1/12
So B alone will do in 12 hours
