Overvoltage Protection for I/O
and Data Signals
Brochure 1364B February 2003
Features
Double density signal and data products provide
protection for up to four discrete or two analog
signals per 17.5 mm DIN-rail space
General Description
Industrial computers, PLCs, sensors, and
instrumentation contain the brains that make todays
modern automation systems live and breath. At the

Grounding of PLUGTRAB PT Surge Protectors
Connecting the Grounds
Best Practice
For maximum performance, the ground of the
equipment or I/O system should be made directly at
the PLUGTRAB PT as shown in Figure 5. This means
the equipment earth will be the same point as the
surge protection circuit earth. Now, the large potential
difference that occurs because of the surge current
discharge occurs only at the surge protection device.
And the only voltage the protected electronics sees is
the limiting voltage of the PLUGTRAB PT.

Analog Signal Protection
(Floating Ground Circuits)
PT 2x2 and PT 1x2 Series
Brochure 1364B January 2003
Description
Floating ground signals such as 4-20 mA analog loops
should be protected with the PT 2x2 series. Each PT
2x2 protects two independent floating ground signal
circuits. The circuit design features line-to-line (normal
mode) protection with SAD components and line-to-line
and line-to-ground (normal and common mode)
protection with high powered GDT technology. The
design assures the integrity of the floating ground
signal as no component with leakage current is
connected to ground (only the gas discharge tube
makes a ground connection).
For applications where only one analog circuit is to be Figure 6. Circuit Diagram with PT 2x2-BE
protected, the PT 1x2 series plugs are available. The
footprint and packaging is identical to the other PT
series. The protection circuit is connected using pins
7, 11/8,12.

Discrete Signal Protection
(Ground Referenced Circuits)
PT 4x1 and PT 2x1 Series
Brochure 1364B February 2003
Description
Ground referenced signals such as discrete I/O
(binary) should be protected with the PT 4x1 series.
Each PT 4x1 can protect up to 4 discrete I/O signal
circuits (using a common return). The circuit design
features a hybrid circuit providing line-to-ground
protection with fast acting SAD components and high-
powered GDT technology. As with the other
PLUGTRAB PT series, the protection is achieved in a
hot-swap plug unit allowing, quick maintenance and
diagnostics.

120 V ac Discrete Signal Protection
PT 2x1 VA Series
Brochure 1364B February 2003
Description
For 120 V ac discrete (on/off) I/O signals a unique
suppression circuit must be used. When protecting
signal circuits with voltages higher than 24 V ac
common mode gas discharge tube protection can be
problematic. The gas discharge tube can ignite with
enough follow-current to interrupt upstream fusing.
This is undesirable because you now sacrifice system
uptime by having to replace fuses. The PLUGTRAB
PT 2x1 VA provides the solution. The circuit features
primarily an MOV circuit as the protection scheme
therefore eliminating the follow-current problem
previously described.
Figure 18. Circuit Diagram with PT 2x1VA
The plug also features MOV failure disconnect with
remote and local indication. Two discrete 120 V ac IN OUT
circuits can be protected with each PLUGTRAB PT L L
2x1 VA.

Data Signal Protection
(DATA-PLUGTRABs)
PT...-HF Series
Brochure 1364B February 2003
Description
Industrial networks can be easily protected with the
DATA-PLUGTRAB product series. The PT-HF
products feature a unique hybrid circuit with specially
arranged components to minimize circuit capacitance.
This insures that there will not be any attenuation of
the data signal for even the fastest of bus networks.
The DATA-PLUGTRAB PT-HF can be used with bus
systems up to 12 Mbits/sec. For Fast Ethernet (100
BaseT) consult the Phoenix Contact TRABTECH
catalog for p/n D-LAN-A/RJ45-BS. With surge current
handling capacity up to 10 kA, vulnerable network
interface cards are safely protected. As with the other
PLUGTRAB PT products, maintenance and testing are Figure 22. Circuit Diagram PT 2x2-HF shown with PT
easy with the hot-swap plugs. The wiring diagrams 2x2-BE
on the following pages show the most popular bus
network circuits. Depending on the operating voltage
and transmission speed, other solutions are possible.

Three and Four Wire Sensor Protection
PT 4...
Brochure 1364B February 2003
Description
Three and four wire sensor signals such as RTD and
Strain Gage applications require a special approach for
surge protection. The sensors themselves contain no
microprocessors; however, their sensitive and fragile
construction mean they can be easily damaged by
surges. While the component cost for these devices
may be relatively low, the cost of replacing one can be
quite significant. This is especially true when the
device is embedded deep within equipment such as
the case of RTDs within the windings of a motor or
strain gages within the load cell of a weighing system.
The cost of downtime for troubleshooting and
replacement should also be considered. Also, these Figure 32. Circuit Diagram with PT 4-BE
signals are typically run to specialty input cards which
are expensive to replace. To prevent signal loss when
protecting sensor signals, special care must be taken
to assure no series impedance is added.

Description
The CHECKMASTER testing equipment can be used
to verify operation of any of the PLUGTRAB PT series
of surge protectors. Although PLUGTRAB PT surge
protection does not require maintenance, users often
like knowing that they are still protected. The
CHECKMASTER provides verification by checking the
status of the plug units. Indication and diagnostics of
the plug status are provided via the CHECKMASTERs
LCD display. Also, users can interface the
CHECKMASTER directly to a PC or printer for records
keeping and documentation.
