1.

Who is the artist?

Andy Mercer
2. What do you like about their work?
I like how Andy Mercer combines and graphic and traditional together, creating a very
satisfying work in term of the uses of lines. At the same time, I also like how he uses
dimensions to enable the pictures to become more realistic.
3. Describe how the artist uses line as a language to describe:
shape/texture/tone/emotion/character
By observing Andys art work, it can clearly be seen that line was the major
component used to tell the story of each picture. The different shapes of lines vary
among his drawing. While some contain round shape, I think most of them are
associated with only straight lines compacting together in the same area. The textures
are crowded in particular places, yet there are usually free spaces in the top part of the
picture. The colours that were used are mostly solid colours without much shadings.
Thus, it caused his art work to contain little amount of tone with different lines that
stand out.
Nevertheless, I think his art work can establish very strong emotions to the
audience due to the varieties texture of lines used. The lines that are crowded together
express the feeling of clutter city full of buildings and people, whereas less overlapping
lines represent an organized city with friendly environment. Also, I think the lines can
review the characteristics via the complex component of the city and the colour of the
sky. For example, dark blue colour can show that it is night time, and purple sky with
some white clouds can exhibit a clear summer day.
