fter two years spent working in India, Lulu Watts and husband
Nathan were keen to nd a family home in the UK that they
could really make their own. We moved to Mumbai in 2007
when Nat got a job over there with his company, says Lulu.
While there, we rented an all-white apartment with lots of marble. It was
very much a sanctuary to escape the citys hustle and bustle.
Back in Britain, the couple returned to their Notting Hill at, which had
been rented out during their absence, only to discover it was now way too
small for them. Lulu had started the textile brand Lulu & Nat while shed
been away and had made the most of her time in India, sourcing Fairtrade
textiles, selling wholesale and going to trade shows as well as buying new
things for their home back in the UK. We were planning to start a family,
which, teamed with my rapidly growing stock for Lulu & Nat and the things
wed bought in India, meant we needed somewhere bigger, she says.
They found a huge ve-bed house in Highgate that had lino ooring
throughout, ugly gas res, woodchip on the walls, few original features
and an upstairs that resembled a series of bedsits, with lots of odd-shaped
rooms. We had to use our imagination, says Lulu, but luckily Nat, with
his job as an interior retail designer, could see how the space could be
recongured to become a light, airy home with an ofce for me too.
It was right at the edge of their budget. Wed bought our at at the
peak of the housing boom, which had since crashed, explains Lulu, so we
really had to stretch ourselves to afford this place. The couple decided to
tackle the renovation one stage at a time, starting with the ground oor
where bifold doors were added to the kitchen-diner/living room to create
a large open-plan area, leaving the front room as an ofce for Lulu.
When it came to furnishing this new space, limited funds meant Lulu had
to be creative. I bought the two sofas, which originally came from SCP, for
just 200 from a supplier who was getting rid of them, while the designer
ceiling light came from a skip C O N T I N U E D OV E R N E X T PA G E

punches of colour. When our daughters Eva and later Zoe came along, this
room really came to life, says Lulu. Its great for the family, and as its at the
back of the house, its really quiet too.
Once they had replenished their savings, the couple tackled the
upstairs, reconguring the front half of the rst oor and removing a
Jack-and-Jill bathroom to make way for a nursery, Zoes bedroom and
a main bedroom with ensuite. At the same time, the loft bedroom and
ensuite were redecorated. As were situated on a corner plot, we had
so many windows to consider, says Lulu. It was a real headache when
it came to things like the best places to position radiators and storage.
In each of the bedrooms, Lulu has used her own designs for bedlinen
from tigers and elephants to zigzags all set against mainly white
walls, and has combined treasures from the couples time in India with
everyday items, from framed cotton sacks to glittery lions on shelves full
of crockery. I get bored easily, so I change things around, she explains.
Once all the work on the house was nished, the next stage was
for Lulu and Nat to renovate the outside space. We had a large garage
and very little else, says Lulu. As were on a steep hill, we had to do
some serious terracing. Nat drew up several plans, but we eventually
chose to create three main levels including a patio, a grassed area and
a new garage, nished with a tropical border against a cedar fence.
EXTERIOR We now have a lovely urban sanctuary.

t was her all-consuming interest in food that inspired the
design of Hilary Sturzakers light and glossy Edinburgh kitchen.
Im a consultant to food businesses and passionate about
current trends, local produce and cooking, so when we bought
and renovated this at, the kitchen was our priority, she says.
It meant extensive reorganisation of walls in this city centre
apartment, but the gorgeous room thats now the heart of their
family home was worth the effort. The current kitchen was the back
living room, and the dining area was the original small kitchen, Hilary
explains. We also removed a wall and that opened up enough space
to create a study and sitting area where our son Archie plays.
Keen to add warmth to the minimalist room, Hilary and her husband
Graham chose brick tile for the wall behind the dining table. Hilary loves
the industrial look, which sits well with the urban, sophisticated theme
in the rest of this spacious and thoughtfully designed single-storey at.
When they bought it 10 years ago, it was in good condition but had
been untouched since the 1970s, with woodchip wallpaper everywhere.
Wed both sold smaller ats so were able to afford somewhere this
spacious, says Hilary. We wanted to update it and personalise it,
and, as we were in the early days of our relationship, evenings spent
stripping wallpaper and sharing pizza and a few beers seemed fun!

dramatic greys with vintage nds, retro furniture and collections of
graphic posters from their travels. We bought a lot online, because
we wanted unique things rather than high street buys, says Hilary.
Details are important to us both we replaced the radiators with
either retro style or original vintage and weve chosen chrome for
all the switches and sockets, for instance. I think that contemporary
touches prevent a period home from seeming gloomy.
Little has changed since Archie arrived four years ago. We were
determined to continue living in the centre of town: Edinburgh is an
extremely child-friendly city and as this apartment is all on one level,
we didnt feel the need to move out to the suburbs and put up stair
gates everywhere. Archie does have lots of toys, of course, but he
keeps them tidy and weve chosen original artworks and classic
books for his room rather than Disney cartoons.
The nal touches were transforming the front and back gardens.
Graham and I enjoyed the process of designing them ourselves,
says Hilary. We invested in good-quality Astroturf for a shady spot
and bought some decent-sized pots for around the front door. The
previous owner walked past recently while visiting a friend and
knocked on the door to say how nice it looked. HB

ike many parents, Ruth Deasy was discovering that spiralling
house prices meant her two grown-up sons were unlikely to
move out of her little townhouse in Dublins Stoneybatter
any time soon. So she decided to look for somewhere more
spacious that wouldnt leave her rattling around once they did leave
home. I had a clear idea of what I was after, says Ruth. I wanted a
space where three grown-ups could have privacy when needed but
that could still open out to accommodate us as a family. It should have
only one stair Georgian and Victorian homes frequently have many
half-levels and, having sprained my ankle, I realised how difcult that
can be to manage and a downstairs bathroom so that I could live
on one level if necessary in the future.
After two years of searching, Ruth nally found what she was
looking for. As soon as I got out of the car in front of this house,
I liked it, she says. I loved the little cul-de-sac, and although the
building was divided into two ats and very neglected, it had good
bones. I was prepared to take on a renovation.
She employed an architect and a structural engineer to help her
with the work. It was really useful to have the engineer on board
as there were structural problems to be addressed and she could
give me an idea of the costs involved, Ruth explains. I had a
budget, so I set a red line and worked from there.
Most of the major renovation was on the ground oor where
Ruths wishlist included a family-friendly extension, modular spaces
DANNYS BEDROOM
A sheepskin rug and that could be opened or enclosed to give privacy when needed,

architect what she wanted: he came up with three plans and Ruth
chose one. She then sat down with him to work out the details,
where everything would be placed, down to light sockets and
power points. I cant emphasise enough how essential a good
architect is its money well spent, says Ruth. This home would
be very different without his input.
Now the kitchen is part of a new open-plan area that includes the
extension and has a massive rooight to make the space bright and
airy. Original large sliding pocket doors to the living room have been
kept so that it can be closed off for privacy. Ruth selected the kitchen
cabinets herself. I needed a cost-effective solution as Id spent most
of my budget on the build, she says. She settled on units from
German rm Nobilia, with a mirrored kickboard to create a feeling
of light and space, in a dark grey nish as it was the cheapest option
and worked well. I would quite like a colour, but it can always be
sprayed at a later date, she says.
Ruth decided against a large sliding door to the outside. It didnt
match my style, which I felt was more loft or cosy industrial,
she explains. I also wanted the option of being able to open a
window for fresh air without also letting in leaves, wind and cats!

An edible garden should be a tempting
treat every time you walk through it
and creating somewhere that tastes
as good as it looks isnt as hard as it
might at rst seem. Many edible plants
have lovely foliage and owers, and a
brick or timber raised border in the
centre of a decent-sized plot would
create a fantastic focal point if you plant
it up with herbs, vegetables or fruit.
For smaller front gardens where
raised beds may not be practical, you
could try using a herb wheel instead.
This is essentially a wagon wheel shape

different variety of herb. Try chives,
basil, fennel both bronze and green
