ANALYSIS AND DESIGN:

The RCC Slab culvert will be designed as per the guidance provided in the civil technical specification. Vehihicular traffic
load as per the IRC specification of Class "70R" shall be taken into account. Manual load calculations are made and
analysed using the software STAAD pro for the loadings, bending moments and shear forces and design/detail shall be
made as per the manual calculation.

OUTPUTS from STAAD Pro.

Max midspan Moment = 67 kNm
Max support moment = 101.742 kNm
Max Positive Shear = 113.046 kN
Max Negative Shear = 107.214 kN
Max Reaction
Support 1 = 54.156 kN
Support 2 = 217.813 kN
Support 3 = 190.279 kN
Support 4 = 14.381 kN

Considering max. moment s/c of slab,

Design Moment (M) = = 101.742 kNm
Factored Mu = 152.613 kNm
Assuming the depth of slab as 500mm with effective cover of 40 mm
Total Depth = 500 mm
Depth available = 500-40-(20/2) = 450 mm
Min depth req. = 372.477 mm Hence given depth is fine
Mu/bd^2 = 152.61x 10^6/1000 x450 ^2
= 0.7536444444
Percentage tension reinforcement (pt) from SP16
Pt = 0.229 %
= 900 mm2
Area of reinforcement (Pt = 0.229%) = (1000 x 500 x 0.229)/100
= 1145 mm2
Therefore,For Main Reinforecement
Provide 20 mm bars, Spacing = (314.159X 1000)/1145
= 274.375 mm Max is 300 mm c/c spacing
So let us take 250 mm c/c
Mu for Shorter Span = 45.7839
Mu/bd^2 = 0.22609
Therefore Area of reinforcement = Mu/(st*j*d)
= 565.233 mm2
Min req. For distri. = 600 mm2
Therefore provide dist. bar 12 bars
Spacing = 188.495 mm Max is 450 mm c/c spacing
So let us take 180 mm c/c
N/mm2

Design of Strip Footing

DESCRIPTION VALUES UNIT Remarks

Vertical Reaction (Load) 217.813 kN/m

SBC 200 kN/m2
Stem thickness 500 mm Assumption
Footing thickess 500 mm Assumption
Selfweight of stem 31.25 kN/m
Load of Fill up Soil 3.125 kN/m
Total Load 252.188 kN/m
Width of footing 1891.41 mm
So lets take 2000 mm

Thickness of Footing

Net Soil Pressure 189.141 kN/m2

0.189141 N/mm2
Critical Section for shear is @ d distance from face of the stem. "d"is obtained by solving the following eq.
0.189141*1000*((2000-500)/2-d)=0.36*1000*d
where .36 is Tc value for .25 Pt & M25 grade concrete
Hence d = 258.322999

Assume cover of 75 mm and 16mm bars

Hence min. D req = 341.322999

Hence given depth is safe in shear
Total depth of Footing = 500 mm
Effective depth of Footing = 417 mm

Design of Stem
For Central Supports
Hori. Force due to Traction = 19.239 kN
Moment due to Traction = 48.0975 kNm
Factored Moment, Mu = 72.15 kNm
Eff. depth required to resist Mu = 256.10 mm
Therefore thickness req. = 306.10 mm
Thickness provided = 500 mm Higher depth helps in avoiding
Mu/bd2 = 0.36 mm shear reinforcement
Ast req = 0.113 %
But for footing min. Rein. = 0.2 %
Hence Ast req = 1000 mm2
Therefore provide 16 mm bars = 201.061 mm Hence take spacing 200 mm c/c
Distri. Take .12 % = 600 mm2
Take 12 mm bars @ spacing = 188.495 Hence take spacing 180 mm c/c

Design for flexure

For Central Supports
Hori. Force due to Traction = 19.239 kN
Moment due to Traction = 48.0975 kNm
Resisting Load = 252.188 kNm
Eccentricity = 165.8441839 mm < L/6 Hence Safe
Therefore,x = 1165.844184 mm
Critical Section for moment is @ midway b/w centreline & edge of stem.
The length "x" is obtained from the eq, L/2 - l/4
x = 875 mm
Taking higher value of x
Therefore, Mu = 128.5395296 kNm
R = 0.739
Pt/100 = 0.002099787
Therefore, Pt = 0.209978676
We have assumed P = 0.25 Hence Safe
Ast = 1250 mm2
Spacing ( 20 dia bars) = 251.3274123 mm

So Lets take 20 dia. @ 250 c/c
