CIV4235 Advacned Structual Design

Reinforced Concrete Deep Beam Test

Two reinforced concrete deep beams are to be tested experimentally to failure. You are
required to compare and discuss the failure loads measured experimentally with those
calculated on the basis of Strut and Tie Model (STM) method. The test set-up, beam
dimensions and provided reinforcement are shown on the next page. Assume the concrete
compressive strength fc is 50 MPa whilst a measured value will be obtained on the day of
testing. The yield stress of the N16 bars is 540 MPa and will be confirmed before the day of
testing as well.

Part 1: Based on the STM method, you are required to calculate the theoretical failure load
of the deep beam. In order to find a good STM, you need to determine the distribution of
elastic stresses using a commercial package such as ANSYS, ABAQUS, etc. You also need
to clearly show the distribution of elastic stresses over the cross-section under the point load
by using your elastic model. However, it is not necessary to calculate any particular value of
stress or failure load in ANSYS or ABAQUS.

Part 2: The theoretical failure load calculated from Part 1 using STM method must be
compared with the measured experimental value. Discuss the reasons which cause the
difference between experimental and theoretical results.

It is noted that the deep beams will be tested on Thursday 17 August, 2017 based on the
following schedule:

Session 1 from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm (Surnames starting with A-K)

Session 2 from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm (Surnames starting with L -Z)

Please note it is compulsory to attend one of the seesions mentioned above.

Note: You are to complete this project in teams of two (2) and you are free to choose your
team member. Please note it is your responsibility to keep a photocopy of your
submission. Your submission must cover both Parts 1 and 2. You need to use the marking
scheme sheet given on Moodle as the first page after the standard Monash cover sheet.

You must place your report by 5:00 pm Monday 28 August, 2017 in the assignment box
(The assignment box is located in Building 60 next to the Department Office).
